I can't find the link, but a few years ago I saw a video of a group of people who pulled a rather mean, felonious prank on a girl. They were videotaping in the car, and she was in the backseat between two of them.

One of the guys said, "Okay _______, we're going to reveal what we're really up to tonight. We're going to kill you. We're going to take you out in the middle of nowhere, murder you and bury you."

The girl thought they were joking at first, but they kept the gag going, and eventually she started crying and freaking out.

Of course, it was a prank, but when they let her go, she went straight to the cops, and the participants got into trouble.

One thing important to remember in scaring anyone, much less a group of young people these days, is that they will all have cell phones, and if there is a burglar/rapist/grim reaper/nuclear war/whatever you decide to cook up, they will immediately get on their phones and start making calls to family or the police, or simply to confirm what you're presenting.

A good technique might be to collect cell phones for "a game" (like "guess whose phone this is") and first prize is an iPod or cash or something. If you can convince them to turn their phones over, and you further get them corralled into a spot where they can't escape but can only scream and panic and shit themselves, then the possibilities are endless.

As far as what to do, if pre-preparation isn't a problem, fireworks and strategically-placed fishing line (to pull shutters, pull things off walls, etc) are good props.

Pour some ketchup/tomato sauce on a towel or napkin and then scream as if you just cut yourself. Walk towards them "bleeding" and screaming.

hide in their room and wait for them to come in. have someone on the outside kill the lights in the room and rig the door so that they can't get out of the room. as the lights go off and they go for the door, walk behind them. when they realize the door won't open and turn back around, do jump at them and scare the pants off of them

Poke a small hole in the middle of a metal trash cans bottom.
Tie a cotton string about 2 feet long to a nail and thread it thru the hole with the nail on the inside.
Soap up the string with bar soap.
When you pull on the string an unearthly moan will radiate from the can.
Can be hair raising if done right.

And then, later that night, do it again.

Gotta keep them on their toes.
