Coalition forces launch major offensive against al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents in northeast Afghanistan

KABUL (BNO NEWS) — Hundreds of coalition and Afghan soldiers have launched a major offensive against al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents in northeast Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Sunday.

The operation began when a combined force of more than 600 Afghan and ISAF service members moved into a Taliban stronghold in Kunar province. ISAF said ‘a number’ of insurgents had been killed in the attack, but provided no other details.

“We will continue to take the fight to the enemy alongside our Afghan partners,” said U.S. Army Major General John F. Campbell, commanding general of Regional Command-East.

The alliance said two American service members had been shot dead during the operation, while an Afghan service member was also killed. “The fighting is ongoing,” it added.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in the fight against our common enemies, the Taliban and al-Qaeda,” Campbell added.

ISAF said it took precautions to prevent collateral damage and said it had so far received no reports of injuries to civilians.

The sudden offensive comes as the rate of coalition fatalities in Afghanistan has sharply risen over the past few months, with around 100 coalition service members being killed in June alone.

A vast majority of the fatalities were from the United States, and a majority of all NATO service members killed so far this year died as a result of improvised explosive device (IED) attacks in the country’s south.
