Legal Question--Hurricane prep & public school
First a little background.
in 2008 Ike sent a 15' storm surge over our town and flooded most of it.
The public school was located on high ground and the VFD made it a base of operations pre-storm. They had permission from the school board since the chief is on the board.

Most of the town received 6-8 feet of water, the schools parking lot just got a couple of inches.

I have a lot of vehicles that I need to get to high ground during our next storm.
I would like to park my son's vehicle at the schools parking lot (He's in the Army in Iraq right now.)

I've been told the fire dept will be taking over the school again if a hurricane comes this way and no one else will be allowed to park their vehicles on the property. They will be parking "their" vehicles there.

MY QUESTION.
Can they do this? specifically not allow anyone to park their cars on the parking lot?

Depends on local laws, I would think.

Chances are, it's the property of the school district. The school district has the authority to tow cars of the property in most cases. Our school has its own police system, and cars that do not have parking stickers and are in the lot for an extended time without being moved will be towed.

No stickers no po po's here, it's just an elementary school.
It wouldn't be extended just maybe a day.

I think they will have bigger things to worry about than towing cars.

Yeah I'm not worried about the cops towing my sons car.

I live just down the road from the school and it just so easy to be able to drive up the road where it will be safe as the storm comes through.

I just don't want the VFD hassling me if I try to.
After Ike people went to the school thinking it was being used as a shelter and was maybe a drop off place for emergency supplies, since all the FD and their families were staying in the school. I heard they were quite rude to people that were showing up there asking questions.

Re: Legal Question--Hurricane prep & public school
The school got back to me.
Said i could not park my sons car there, because the FD needed the space for emergency drop offs and distribution.
Which DID not happen in Ike.

Off to find more high ground!
