It's Jupiter.

Jupiter
The largest planet in our solar system begins the year hidden in the Sun’s glare. It will emerge in the morning sky by late March, when it will shine as a bright beacon low in the east shortly before sunrise. As the year progresses, Jupiter will rise earlier and grow brighter, eventually moving into the evening sky. Its best appearance comes in September, when it lines up opposite the Sun in our sky. It will shine at its brightest for the year and remain visible all night.

Actually, that would be Venus. Here is the current sky location for Venus which is in the eastern sky

[link to www.fourmilab.ch]

If you go to that link, then change the UT(Universal time) and date to yesterday, you will see that Venus was in the western sky last night.

Same planet, just lighting up the sky on the west in the eve, and the east in the am

Same here OP, although I see it at a different time. Same time every single night tho, same position all the time. VERY bright, although I can't say whether or not it's gotten bigger.

It's not a planet, that's for sure. I have been watching the sky for 15 years, and this is "new". And I also don't believe it's "planet x" because, well, the "zeta's" are stupid.

Re: Bright star eastern sky around 1am-5am
Greetings,

I have to assume your location which I can fine tune for you if you give more details.

At 1:00, Jupiter will be at roughly 9 degrees not quite due East and rising. At the same time off to your right you will see The Moon at just about 19 degrees.

The one you are asking about is Jupiter.

Stellarium is a free download and will be helpful.

Regards

For all you amateur back seat astronomers like me. Want to know what's in the sky? changes to the current day when you revisit the page.

Use this site linked below, put in your city details and bookmark the page after you have your city details in, then anytime you open the bookmark, voila.. you get what's in the night sky, access to maps, where to look and how bright things should be.

got to this link [link to www.heavens-above.com] select locale, when the new page opens, bookmark it as that, the bookmark will save the location details (well it should - has here)

Nope. That's Venus in the west you're talking about. Venus sets an hour or two after sunset and Jupiter rises in the east around midnight.

Funny thing... it IS indeed Jupiter, so you must not have been paying attention. Look at it in a telescope and you'll see its cloud bands (although it only has one main one now) and at least four of its moons. You can even see the moons in a good pair of binoculars. They will be positioned as shown at:

What's more amazing is people who only look up in the sky once in a while and conclude they're seeing something unusual.

Nope. You're reading it wrong. Venus is EITHER visible in the evening OR the morning...never both at the same time when it is away from the sun. Think about it. If it's ABOVE the western horizon after sunset, it will be BELOW the eastern horizon at sunrise. It's Jupiter that rises in the east a bit after midnight now.

The Watcher\\11

It is O1/03/2011 at 7:30am. I have noticed this bright object as well. I watched this "star" for two and a half hours and it remained at, at least, 60 degrees high in the sky coming from due east. I have no idea what this Star is, if anyone can identify this star please enlighten me. I am in North Carolina, USA. This is unusual for me to witness. The STAR was still visible at 7:20am, when the sky was light.
