By the way, every recruiter that calls my husband this past few weeks, asks how long he has been unemployed. If he tells them the truth - 11 months, he never hears from them again.

1) The writing has been on the wall for a long time. You (and he) should have known this was coming, and prepared for it. I've known since 2004

2) In preparing for this, you would have had something to fall back on. Some kind of self-employment. A plan.

Now... that said --

I agree, there are many people who are unemployed and always will be, those are mostly leaches, but the majority of the unemployed don't want to be unemployed, the majority are trying to look for a job, and that's hard when you have respect for yourself as a human being and don't want flip burgers for some fat-ass republican who makes 10 times your yearly salary in a week working for an insurance agency.

When I get out of high school, I plan on going for a B.S (perhaps phD eventually) in a University for astronomy and physics. When I get my degree, I would probably have the knowledge to work at nearly any observatory, particle collider, laboratory in the world. However, how long do you expect I will be unemployed during this time while searching for a scientific place? Most likely a year or two at it's worst, and will you be calling me, someone who is willing to contribute to the wealth of the scientific community and human knowledge, a 'leacher?'

Report: Offshore outsourcing helps U.S. job market

A new report finds that offshore outsourcing allows companies to create new jobs within U.S. borders. But many IT professionals and workers rights activists stand firm in their belief that sending work to foreign countries is ultimately bad for business.
The report, "The Impact of Offshore IT Software and Services Outsourcing on the U.S. Economy and the IT Industry," was released by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA). The group, which consists of 375 corporate members including Microsoft and IBM, commissioned research and forecasting firm Global Insight to conduct the study. Global Insight's chief economist, Dr. Nariman Behravesh, led the research team.

Dr. Behravesh and his associates found that outsourcing increases the number of U.S. jobs, improves real wages for American workers, and pushes the U.S. economy to perform better.

Specifically, the team reported that global sourcing saves money, some of which is used to create jobs within...

The poster of this topic should seriously look at his or her paycheck. Part of the deductions from his or her paycheck is unemployment insurance. So the unemployed should be getting what they paid into it. Just like social security. Second, when people do not rejoin the workforce, they tend to get desperate. Hence, the increased crime rate especially burglaries, home invasions, car thefts. The fact they have not rejoined the workforce says they are doing something else. Hopefully, their own business. Unlike the working stiffs that trod into the office, sit a few hours pretending to work, and go home. At least, that is what I saw my coworkers do most of the time. Ironically, the hardest worker, me, was fired due to management trying to lower the pay costs by getting rid of longtime employees. That and outsourcing full time positions but making sure to keep one opening to jump through the legal loophole not to replace full time people with outsourced employees. Typical excuse is they can't find the appropriate talent to fill the full time position so they hire lesser talent overseas. Meanwhile, management bonuses increase exponentially to this cost savings program.

I think if a person is umemployed, doesn't try very hard to create and income or doesn't try to start some type of business then yes.

The only exception is housewives and househusbands. That is a lifestyle choice.

Clearly you haven't been around long enough to note that while there may be jobs available, they are not the decent paying jobs that there used to be.

Most industry has been shipped overseas, Most skilled jobs are gone.

And the economy hasn't really recovered. If you are buying that particular brand of bullshit you are in for a bitter surprise.

Employers are NOT hiring unemployed. Yes I know that sounds stupid, but that is what is happening. So if you have a job you can go out and apply for other jobs and get them. If you don't have a job your app is ignored.

To top it off, getting a 40 hour a week job is nigh unto impossible, as too many states have a mandatory cut off at 30 hours for benefits. So companies get around the spirit of the law by only hiring for 30 hours or less.

The USA is no longer the most powerful and 'successful' economy. That goes to China. The USA is the largest debtor of all the nations. The use of debt has allowed the US to post overinflated numbers when it comes to the economy's health, which does not reflect the reality that the US economy is still in the valley and teeters on complete collapse which is just right around the corner.
