My County Lifts 30-yr Ban On Fireworks
I live in Sedgwick County, KS and for the past 30+ years there has been a really anal ban on fireworks... until this year. Several weeks ago it was announced by the county Fire Marshal that the ban would be lifted and anything that was legal in other parts of the Sunflower state would now be legal in Sedgwick County. Bear in mind: this is a FIRE DEPT official tacitly endorsing the use of incendiary devices!

The first hing that crossed my mind was this: since they know that soon TSHTF, are they giving everybody the ooportunity for "one last blast?" I also considered that the move may be economic-based, since fireworks have an obscenely high retail markup and bring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the pockets of churches, scout troops, disabled organizations... even the veteran associations get involved. So, there is always BIG money to be had during the week of authorised [and very frenzied] selling. BUT: the decision still smacks of something that's just not quite "right."

Since this is a county decision, local city ordinances [such as Wichita's] are still in effect: nothing may be fired that goes more than 6' up or 6' out, but even the city is being pretty casual about the whole affair.

Has your local area enacted similar relaxations of long-standing laws concerning fireworks?

Of course: it's a pretty moot point for us locally... it started raining yesterday and has continued off/on ever since... but is still a VERY ODD public stance the Fire Department is taking on this.

Did I mention that Bottle Rockets are still banned state-wide? Dudes like "Sam" are likely to thank for that...

...but, it's STILL strange for a county to do this.

Ours just cracked down on where people can use legal fireworks, which are few. Has to be on your property, not in the road. But we have thousands of illegal fireworks here in Aztlan. I am happy for you.
