Get yourself a Mosin Nagant or an SKS used. They are really cheap and ammo is cheap too. Get 1000 rounds minimum for each firearm. If you want to spend a little more get an AK47 (SHTF reliability), if you want to spend a little more still get an AR-15 (superior accuracy). All of these guns will treat you right, and may save your ass when the day finally comes.

I never owned a gun until about 9 months ago. Now I own 5. That's what I get for reading the internet....

Seriously though, get armed if you aren't already, you don't have to spend a fortune to get something reliable.

For all of you that are equipped with guns: what are your targets? What/who is the enemy, how is it going to present itself to you that enables you to make a difference with your gun and some shooting skills?

Sorry but I have difficulties seeing how a bunch of people with guns could make a difference to the kind of threats we are facing at this point.

Please describe the scenarios you envision where your guns would make a difference, other than the naive "all against all" post-apocalyctic scenario where your main goal is to steal food from your neighbors or preventing them from stealing yours.

It's still just as real and just as good. Dying for freedom is the right thing to do, for those of us who might live after we do.

Good choices, the XD 40 is a great gun, but get the high capacity clips. Mine is a 45 with a few 13 round clips. When TSHTF more bullets is better. The AR15 is a great gun! I really don't think it makes a lot of difference who made it, they all seem to work well. Get lots of 30 rd clips, and hope you never need them. I can go through 30 rds in a few seconds with any of them. I like the laser on a 4 rail, but if you don't have a long gun, you probably should think about a scope. The AR is quite accurate at 2 or 3 hundred yards. A 4 rail with a scope on top and a laser on one side and a flashlight on the other would be great for any situation, night or day. My SP3 is one I put together from parts (mostly S&W) which in many states does not have to be registered. That's a plus when they come looking for guns. Another way to go is get the surplus M16 from Sportsmans Guide for $600, and then buy a trigger housing for $100 to $150. Right now, I am collecting parts to build an HK 91. There are lots of surplus G3s being parted out. If they ever put enough parts out there I think I can build one for under a thousand dollars. Good luck.
