***Gulf of Mexico Doom - Methane Gas at record levels***
DK Matai writes: Gas and Methane Levels At Record

As much as one million times the normal level of methane is showing up near the Gulf of Mexico oil gusher, enough potentially to create dead zones in the water. "These are higher levels than we have ever seen at any other location in the ocean itself," according to sources cited by Reuters. The "flow team" of the US Geological Survey estimates that 2,900 cubic feet of natural gas, which primarily contains methane, is being released into the Gulf waters with every barrel of oil.

The constant flow of around 65,000 barrels of crude oil places the total daily amount of natural gas at over 188 million cubic feet. So far, over 13 billion cubic feet may have been released, making it one of the most vigorous methane eruptions in modern human history. The crude oil from the "Macondo Prospect" well contains around 40 percent methane, compared with about 5 percent found in typical oil deposits. To add to the challenge, methane and other toxic gases are trapped in deep water locations. Methane measurements can give a view to the extent of the oil gush in the Gulf of Mexico. Note our previous briefing: "Gulf Oil Gusher: Danger of Tsunamis From Methane?"

This seems to be the case and as the water heats up more methane rises to the surface potentially increasing the chance of a huge methane bubble explosion.

I agree, though I also think all our pollution combined doesn't equal what they have done to the gulf.

Halliburton did this, remember that

Methane concentrated in the water only depletes the oxygen within the Ocean. However a event such as a undersea landslide or quake will result in vast reserves of Methane surfacing and potentially igniting atmospherically, causing a huge localised fireball. destroying much of the OZone in the Gulf for some time.

how the hell would they do that?

by the time those bubbles reach the surface they are not the small ones we see emerging. the decrease in pressure means they get much bigger, and disperse over a wide area too.

it's getting into the atmosphere, and slowly, ever so slowly (at the moment anyway) atmospheric concentrations are rising.

when it gets above 5%, and up to 15% of methane to air in any area it is accumulated in the atmosphere, just one lightning bolt and abomb

why would methane stay in the water once released from it's hydrate state?

it is lighter than air, so it will shoot up out of the water.

yes, small percentages will stay in the water, but the vast majority will escape to the atmosphere as it is mostly insoluble in water.

methane hydrates stay in the water, or on the seafloor anyway, until they are disturbed by some destructive event.

Methane lighter than air? aren't you confusing that with Hydrogen and Helium.

Methane is a heavier element, which is diffused by water and sinks to the bottom due to the 20 composity, not the H.
