Epithets increase tension over Korea

By Choe Sang-Hun International Herald Tribune

TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2005

SEOUL Tensions between the United States and North Korea increased Monday as both sides turned up the rhetoric after a decision in Washington to dispatch 15 Nighthawk stealth fighters to the Korean Peninsula.

Vice President Dick Cheney of the United States described Kim Jong Il, the North Korean head of state, as an "irresponsible leader."

North Korea, in turn, called the deployment of U.S. aircraft a prelude to war. On Monday, the state-run Pyongyang Radio, using a vulgar epithet, compared Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice of the United States to a dog "that has no fear of a tiger and barks at it."

Washington´s harsh comments and its dispatching of aircraft to South Korea, which followed a brief period of calm and conciliatory gestures, suggested to some analysts in Seoul that the United States may be preparing to take a far tougher position toward the North Korean government.

At the same time, some analysts in Seoul have begun to recognize that both North Korea and China, its principal ally, may have interests in prolonging the crisis over North Korea´s nuclear weapons program rather than settling it.

These perceptions contributed to a growing sense of pessimism in South Korea on the potential for a settlement of the current crisis.

"What we see right now is a tug of war, a war of nerves, between the United States and North Korea," said Kim Tae Hyo, a political scientist at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul. "Even if talks begin, we should be prepared for a drawn-out negotiation."

The NK government certainly seems eager to engage in a war it cannot possibly win.

Maybe this is why all the US aircraft carriers are sitting in the Pacific and Atlantic instead of backing up the one that sits in the warzone.

They cannot win but seeing how much time the US need to win a war with poor 3 world iraq army i do not see anything good for you also.

NK has nukes and they said clearly they would use it. also they have some possible alliees behind them.

Its an attempt to get North korea to attack the south and start a new war, not that that the old one was ever stopped!

The people running the US have no idea what this could lead to and the human cost it will cause....

How exactly would an AC in the Atlantic help w/ NK or Iran?

In case you hadn´t noticed, major combat operations in the Gulf Region ended 2 years ago.

North Korea IS the diversion of our attention. The reason we´ve done nothing about them sooner is because their country really has nothing we want, unlike Iraq´s Oil. BUT they do offer a wonderful bit of distraction from the REAL issues at hand ...which I´m not sure what that is just yet, but I´m sure we´ll all know soon enough

It took the US 72 hours to defeat the Iraqi Army.

The current operations are against insurgents operating in small bands.

Hoooo but 1600 soldier dead later you are still there desperatly trying to hold your positions.

Defeating the main army do not end a war.

My goodness, 3215. You really believe this?

George Bush does NOT dictate reality, even if he does in your eyes.

A war ends when the fighting stops.

The resistance has been getting stronger and more organized BY THE DAY.

The resistance has been receiving support from outside the country, in case you were wondering.

NK is a charter member of the "axis of evil". The neo-cons will eventually be "gunning" for it. Since the Iraq war is a quagmire, it may take some time.

Yes, one would think that the Americans would learn a lesson about maintaining an empire from the Romans.

Unfortunately for them and fortunately for the rest of us the American government is acting like it has no knowledge of tactics, history, or common sense.

At least the Romans were talented engineers; the Americans cannot even build a decent automobile.

USA not big enough to declar war the 1/3 of the world...remember NK is comunist country, they coul alway get some big support, nowadays the US is the enmy number one and even old problem coul be put aside for a temperary alliance, against a common enmy.

I fail to see how you dotn understadn that a new war with Korea + Iraq would be just the start of ww3

-Korea represent the comunist side of the world with chine 1 billion peoples-

-Iran represent the Muslim side of the world another billion of peoples.

America has only 290.000 citizen wich maybe 30% are able for combat if drafted.

Soothsayer your wisdom is appreciated...unlike the others who believe it will keep growing and growing and growing...crock of sh..! North Korea has been in the planning stages of any attempt at war for a very long time, they are no push over and when push comes to shove maybe they´ll shove a nuclear weapon up our ass!
