Re: BP Closes Off Well
Think people!

If it was that easy why didn't they do this 75-80 days ago?

They were able to cap it at the BOP becuse it's leaking someplace else, thus allowing them to cap it because of decreased pressure.

Thank you. Watching people celebrate something this awful is mind boggling.

Fact: Oil is seeping out of the seafloor. Likely in numerous places. And some of those cracks, after several months, are likely quite large. It's also likely that, as you said above, that these cracks have been releasing so much oil that it lowered the pressure on the bop site enough for capping.

Fact: Capping the bop means that all that pressure is now building up at the weakest link. The cracks.

How on earth is this a "good" thing worthy of celebrating?

And? Do you guys think that a month later that crack leaking oil has gotten smaller or bigger?

Look at the pressure guage it's low. Looks like there's a leak somewhere.

Re: BP Closes Off Well
Quoting from another thread:

Admiiral Thad Allen, National Incident Commander:

"We're encouraged by this development, but this isn't over. Over the next several hours we will continue to collect data and work with the federal science team to analyze this information and perform additional seismic mapping runs in the hopes of gaining a better understanding on the condition of the well bore and options for temporary shut in of the well during a hurricane. It remains likely that we will return to the containment process using this new stacking cap connected to the risers to attempt to collect up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day until the relief well is completed."

My reply in that thread:

What BP is not saying: They cannot leave the cap closed. The well casing is leaking downhole. If they keep the cap closed, they risk cracking the well casings even more. Resulting in bigger leaks into the well bore, and up through cracks in the seafloor. They have to siphon off as much gas/oil as they can to reduce pressure on the leaks downhole.

A successful "bottom kill" to seal the well requires an intact well casing in order to work. In other words, downhole leaks thru the well casing into the well bore makes any "bottom kill" almost impossible--too many leaks.

BAU but no oil flowing. To me, that's terrific progress and worthy of celebration

Re: BP Closes Off Well
If there's a leak (or multiple) in the sea floor, then they will leak more and more with the well plugged and probably get larger due to increased pressure.

There seems to be a video showing a leak in the sea floor, if it's NOT the sea floor, then I'll be a monkey's uncle and happy to be corrected.

Erm no, the amount of presure down there would make no diference even if there was 80 leaks.

Does anyone remember the first live feeds that showed the oil leak straight from the sea floor and then all of a sudden they were showing a BOP when originally the BOP had been destroyed in the original blast??

Re: BP Closes Off Well
"Even if it works, the cap is not a permanent fix, and not the end of the crisis by any means. BP is drilling two relief wells so it can pump mud and cement into the leaking well in hopes of plugging it permanently by mid-August. After that, the Gulf Coast faces a monumental cleanup and restoration that could take years.

BP stock, which has mainly tumbled since the spill began, closed nearly 8 percent higher on the New York Stock Exchange after the news.

Steve Shepard, Gulf Coast chairman of the Mississippi Chapter of the Sierra Club, said: "I think it's a little premature to say it's definitely over. They've gotten our hopes up so many times before that in my mind I don't think it's going to be over until Christmas."

There is no way to know if the cap is holding unless we had access to pressure readings.

Apparently, it took them this long to build this new sealing cap.

I think they knew there was a high risk of something going wrong so they waited until 2-3 weeks before the relief well was going to close off the well anyways.

I don't buy that it will work, I was just reporting what I read. I have to agree that the pressure will build and cause the cracks in the floor of the Gulf to leak even more and I also think there will be an even bigger problem because of the leak in the casing that they capped. There was already a leak there, add a cap, increased pressure, blowout again, and bigger leak - but this is just my opinion.

I drive a four cylinder and have driven less than 4000 miles in the past year and all of my doctors are over 20 miles away - I just plan all my visits on the same day to avoid driving any more than I have to and I REFUSE to buy BP oil products.

Perhaps or maybe just maybe it takes that long too order the fitting and steel and weld it all up then test then ship.
really those Fittings and valves are not just sitting in a hardware store often they are shipped from over seas and can take a long time too get their. What size of pipe is that? if its 16 inch pipe at schedule 160 or more (thickness of pipe)it could take a day a weld per welder. But the shipping was probably the real delay.
