My friend got a new computer and was so generous to give me his old Dell computer today. It is ten times the computer I had before. I got it all hooked up and it went to the log in page just fine, but it won't recognize my Microsoft mouse or this old eMachines keyboard. He had done a clean reinstall of XP before he gave it to me, I am assuming he used a proprietary Dell version that maybe only has drivers for Dell mice and keyboards? What's my next move, any suggestions? I hooked the old eMachines back up, I need to go to the store to get another hunk of ethernet cable and another power cord anyway. Is this a good excuse to buy a new keyboard? But how do I know it will work with the new machine? And why wouldn't the newer Microsoft mouse work? You guys have been ultra helpful in the past, thanks in advance for any help today! <3

The Dell computer has the color-coded round pin ports for the keyboard and mouse, I tried taking the adapter off the USB end of the mouse, and putting that in the square USB port below the color coded round one, but that didn't work. It's a newer microsoft mouse, seems like it shouldn't be a problem?

(lol I'm assuming when you reloaded the OS, that the drivers for the USB are loaded and working.......) That way you'll know right away if your drivers are loading right your muse will 'just work' ..... Well I need to go get a power cord and a hunk of ethernet cable anyway, so that I can have both of these on at once. I have 2 monitors by a fluke. This keyboard is horrible, I could get a new keyboard & mouse and just ASSUME they will work???????

It wasn't me who did the clean re-install, it was a tech employed by the county here, he wiped the hard drive with DOD file-nuking software and reinstalled the XP. I was able to get to the log in screen and I can't WAIT to have a proper computer on a proper connection for the first time in my life! Today is my lucky day if I can just get past this little hurdle.

Mice and Keyboards are standard unless specialized. Doesn't sound like you have anything specialized so that's just a standard. Thusly it sounds like an ID-10-T error. Check to make sure you have the mouse plugged into the mouse socket and the keyboard plugged into the keyboard socket. There you go! if the salt loses its savor, with what shall it be salted? I can't have both at once on unless I get a power cord and a connection cable so I have to go get that stuff, and if I'm going to do that I might as well buy a new keyboard and mouse, I 've wanted a new keyboard for a long time.
