Mideast truce endangered as six killed in West Bank, Gaza

Five Palestinians and a Chinese laborer were killed in the deadliest day of violence to strike the occupied territories since militant groups began observing a fragile truce in January.

Three Palestinians, including a militant leader, were shot dead by Israeli troops, while a Chinese and a Palestinian worker were killed in a revenge attack by militants on a settlement in southern Gaza.

A second Palestinian worker injured in the settlement attack succumbed to his injuries late Tuesday, taking the death toll to three, Israeli medical sources said late Tuesday.

It was the most lethal day since a Palestinian militant blew himself up in Tel Aviv on February 25, killing five Israelis and threatening an already shaky ceasefire.

As Israel fumed over the upsurge in violence, Palestinian interior minister Nasser Yussuf called on the Palestinian factions to stop all acts of violence, warning of the dangers of destroying the fragile truce which has been in place since January.

"We ask all Palestinian factions to completely abide by the quiet understanding," he said in a statement, warning of "the dangers of destroying this agreement".

Yussuf had been due to meet with Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz later on Tuesday, but Israel called the talks off without giving a reason, the statement said.

Earlier, Israeli television reported that Yussuf and Mofaz would hold emergency talks on the violence later Tuesday. The defence ministry refused to comment on the issue.

Mraweh Khaled Kamil, head of Islamic Jihad´s armed wing in the Jenin area, was killed during an Israeli arrest operation in the northern town of Qabatiya, which also saw a 23-year-old civilian killed. Nine Palestinians and a soldier were also injured during the raid, security sources said.

"The truce is in peril and this killing will not go unpunished. Our patience is running out," said Jihad spokesman Khader Adnan.

Within hours the faction took revenge in the form of an explosion in the Jewish settlement of Ganei Tal, which killed a Chinese and a Palestinian worker. Another five Palestinians were wounded in the blast, with one dying of his injuries late Tuesday.

A Palestinian with both legs blown off screamed in agony in Hebrew as Israeli medics battled to save his life.

Elsewhere, troops in southern Gaza shot dead Salah Imaran, 57, who was trying to climb over the Egyptian border fence.

Tuesday´s violence raised to 4,768 the number of people killed during the nearly five-year Palestinian uprising.

Militants also fired a barrage of makeshift Qassam rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel, damaging a house but no one was injured, the army said.

Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qorei lashed out at Israel, saying the killing of Kamil "shows the policy of targeted killings has resumed", he said, denouncing it as "a dangerous threat to the cool-down and Palestinian efforts to preserve it."

Although Israeli officials slammed the Palestinian leadership for failing to clamp down on militants, the newly-installed army chief sought to calm troubled waters.

"Hamas is trying very hard to undermine our efforts to move towards peace with the Palestinian Authority," said Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, speaking of "a new dawn in Palestinian terrorism".

But Dan Halutz, who took over as chief of staff last week, said there would be no strong military response -- for the moment.

"We have to weigh everything seriously and look at the long-term picture, not only the short term," he told reporters in the southern town of Sderot.

"At the same time, we also need to weigh the significance of a broader action against the terror organisations ... There is no doubt that at some stage, our patience will run out. We will decide for ourselves when that is."

Meanwhile, Palestinian civil affairs minister Mohamed Dahlan charged that there was no cooperation between the Palestinian Authority and Israel over Israel´s forthcoming evacuation of all troops and settlers from Gaza.

"As far as I can see there has been no cooperation, only talk of cooperation," said Dahlan following talks with James Wolfensohn, the Middle East quartet´s special envoy for Israel´s disengagement project, and US security coordinator General William Ward.

Jackson´s share of Beatles catalog in doubt

According to testimony, singer is deep in debt

Updated: 2:45 p.m. ET June 7, 2005

LOS ANGELES - As jurors weigh Michael Jackson´s guilt in his child molestation trial, music industry executives and bankers have been weighing a separate, but related question: Will Jackson have to sell his $500 million stake in the Beatles´ music catalog?

Jackson bought the publishing rights to the catalog for about $48 million two decades ago at the height of his career.

But these days, according to testimony at his trial, the self-proclaimed King of Pop is deep in debt at a time when investment interest in the income-spinning property of his storied collection of song rights is strong, industry experts said.

Many believe that Jackson will have to sell his stake in the catalog if he is found guilty and say even an acquittal could prove to be a catalyst for a deal.

The Beatles songs are jointly owned by Jackson and Sony Corp. through Sony/ATV Music Publishing company.

Jackson attorney John Branca and his adviser, music publisher Charles Koppelman, did not return calls seeking a comment.

The Sony/ATV catalog also includes songs like Bob Dylan´s classic "Blowin´ in the Wind" and the works of artists such as Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks.

A spokeswoman for Sony ATV declined to comment, but many industry observers expect Sony is waiting for the opportunity to buy out Jackson. One source close to Sony, however, said no deal appeared to be imminent.

Jackson and former Beatle Paul McCartney collaborated during the 1980s on various songs when the pop star got the idea to buy the copyrights.

Conglomerate ATV in 1969 had purchased Northern Songs, a publishing company established by the Beatles. The catalog included some 4,000 songs, including more than 200 Beatles tunes, worth an estimated two-thirds of the catalog´s value.

ATV was then owned by the late Australian tycoon Robert Holmes a Court, whose company, Bell Group, negotiated with Jackson for 10 months before striking a deal in August 1985.

In 1995, Jackson cut his stake to 50 percent after merging ATV with Sony´s publishing. Jackson also has a 50-percent stake in new songs added to the catalog.

"I´ve heard the rumors he´s trying to raise cash and Sony probably would have the right of first refusal and would be first in line to buy if he chose to sell," said Owen Sloane, an entertainment lawyer who was involved in the original 1985 deal on behalf of ATV.

Accountant John Duross O´Bryan testified for the prosecution at Jackson´s trial that the 46-year-old entertainer had steadily borrowed against his holdings and not paid his share of Sony´s continuing investment. Jackson would have to pay off about $200 million in loans securing the catalog, he said.

Those loans, first provided by Bank of America, were sold in the past month to New York private equity fund, Fortress Investment Group, sources familiar with the matter said.

Fortress was unavailable for comment, but if Jackson defaulted on the loans, the fund would be in a position to seize control of Mijac, the company that controls copyrights to Jackson´s songs.

While physical CD sales have been declining with the explosion of digital distribution, publishing rights have grown in value as songs are being licensed for everything from movies to cell-phone ringtones to video games.

"One of the things that is going on is that investment bankers are getting more into the field, because music publishing is one of the few assets — it is an annuity — that´s not going away and only getting more valuable with ringtones and such," said Mike Sigman, president of Major Songs, a music publishing company.

December 9, 1941 - China declares war on Japan

Today June 8

Wednesday June 8, 4:52 PM
US tells Japan, China to ´move on´ in spat over history

The United States, anxious to snuff out a new flash point in East Asia, has told Japan and China to "move on" in their spat over historical wrongs, arguing that their continuing squabble could damage regional trade and security interests.

The warning came amid indications that six-party talks focusing on North Korea´s nuclear program could soon resume after a one-year hiatus. China and Japan are key participants in these negotiations, along with the United States, Russia and the two Koreas.

"I don´t mean to make light of any of the historical issues here, but they do need to address them and they do need to move on," Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Christopher Hill told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Tuesday.

He said unresolved tensions between China and Japan, exacerbated by diverging historical perspectives and differing military and economic priorities, "disrupt a relationship of great importance" to the region.

"Healthy China-Japan relations are essential to stability and prosperity in East Asia," the assistant secretary of state pointed out.

Ties between the two nations began their downward slide in April, when the Japanese government approved a new history textbook that many Chinese believe glosses over atrocities committed by Japan during World War II, including experiments with weapons of mass destruction, forced prostitution and use of slave labor.

The move sparked violent anti-Japanese protests in Chinese cities, during which demonstrators attacked Japanese diplomatic missions with paint and rocks.

The street protests, however, were followed by diplomatic action.

Late last month, Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi cancelled a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi during her visit to Tokyo to protest his continued pilgrimages to the Yasukuni shrine.

Koizumi has visited the shrine that honors millions of Japanese war dead along with 14 convicted war criminals each year since he took office in 2001 and has indicated he will go again this year.

In addition, China last week publicly voiced its opposition to plans to allow a group of four countries that included Japan to become permanent, veto-wielding members of the UN Security Council.

Meanwhile, the US State Department announced Tuesday it had been informed by North Korea it would return to the six-party talks, the last round of which was held in Beijing in June 2004.

And according to congressional officials, there is now concern Pyongyang might try to exploit the Japan-China rift to its advantage, as the Bush administration tries to cobble together a united front against its nuclear program.

"I am concerned about some of the anti-Japanese demonstrations that seem to have been orchestrated to a large degree by the Chinese government," said Democratic Senator Barack Obama.

Hill assured lawmakers the United States was cooperating with both countries within the six-party process, and Japan and China "are able to work together on that common enterprise."

But he acknowledged tensions between Beijing and Tokyo were cause for concern.

"It´s not something we like to see," noted the US diplomat. "And I would argue when you look at the extent of the economic relationship between China and Japan, which is truly enormous, that this is not in either of their interests as well."

He urged the two countries to learn from the experience of European nations that have been able to put their war-time grievances aside.

However, Hill admitted that they faced "tough issues", and historical heritage could be "a very powerful force."

Thursday, 9 June, 2005, 06:55 GMT 07:55 UK

Pupils treated after school blaze

A number of pupils at an historic English public school have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out in an accommodation unit.
The fire, at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, started in the early hours of Thursday.

Ten fire crews and other specialised equipment was sent to the scene. Sixty pupils had to be led from the building.

Five children were taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were called to the scene just after 0200BST after reports that rooms on the top floor of the three-storey Barton Hill block were filling with smoke.

A severe fire was discovered in the roof of the building.

Assistant divisional officer Steve Law, of Wiltshire Fire Brigade, said: "About 30% of the roof has so far been lost. An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire."

Headmaster Nick Sampson said: "We had a small number of pupils taken to hospital for precautionary measures after inhaling smoke, but all is well."

The college, which was founded in 1843, is attended by the 15-year-old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York, Princess Eugenie, but she was in another part of the college at the time and not involved in the evacuation.

Abbas visits Gaza to rescue truce

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Gaza to persuade militants to abide by a ceasefire threatened by sporadic clashes with Israel.
The militants earlier fired rockets at Jewish settlements in response to an Israeli air strike on Wednesday.

No one was hurt in the air strike, which followed the deaths of three people in a Palestinian missile attack on a Jewish settlement on Tuesday.

The strike marked a major upsurge in violence during a four-month old truce.

Project Bojinka:

1994 - A small bomb explodes on Philippine Airlines Flight 434, killing a Japanese businessman. The bombing was a field test done by Ramzi Yousef to test explosives that would have been used in Project Bojinka, a terrorist attack plan that would be exposed after an apartment fire.

Operation Bojinka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Project Bojinka)
Operation Bojinka (also known as Project Bojinka, Bojinka Plot, Bojinga, from Arabic: بجنكة – slang in many dialects for explosion and pronounced Bo-JIN-ka, except in Egyptian where it is Bo-GIN-ka) was a planned large-scale attack on airliners in 1995, and was a precursor to the September 11 attacks.

The term can refer to the "airline bombing plot" alone, or that combined with the "Pope assassination plot" and the "CIA plane crash plot". The first refers to a plot to destroy 11 airliners on January 21 and 22, 1995, the second refers to a plan to kill Pope John Paul II on January 15, 1995, and the third refers a plan to crash a plane into the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia and other buildings. Operation Bojinka was prevented on January 6 and 7, 1995, but some lessons learned were apparently used by the planners of the September 11 attacks. This article will cover all three plans.

The money handed down to the plotters originated from Al-Qaida, an international Islamic militant organization which was then based in Sudan. Philippine authorities say that Operation Bojinka was developed by alleged Al-Qaida operatives Ramzi Yousef and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed while they were in Manila, Philippines in 1994 and early 1995.

Several media outlets, including TIME Asia [1] ( [link to www.time.com] wrongly claim that the word Bojinka means "loud bang" or "explosion" in Serbo-Croatian. Endnote 7 of Chapter 5 of the 9/11 Commission Report states that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed claims that "bojinka" is "a nonsense word he adopted after hearing it on the front lines in Afghanistan." "BOHICA" is common military slang for ´Bend Over Here It Comes Again´ which refers to an incoming enemy attack, often bombs.

Bird Flu Concerns Prompts China to Suspend Some Poultry Exports to Hong Kong
Chinese authorities have suspended poultry exports from the western province of Xinjiang to Hong Kong because of an outbreak of bird flu.

China notified Hong Kong Wednesday that it has culled more than 13,000 geese at a farm in Xinjiang.

A government statement says hundreds of dead geese were found on the farm and that tests showed they had died from the H5N1 avian flu strain, which can be lethal to humans.

It said officials in Xinjiang have carried out vaccinations on birds at all nearby poultry farms.

Hong Kong says it has not imported any live birds or poultry meat from Xinjiang and the suspension of exports is merely a precaution.

Greenspan hints at higher rates

Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan has said the US economy is continuing to grow in 2005, and hinted that the Fed would continue to raise rates.
He told the US Congress that the economy "seems to be on a reasonably firm footing, while underlying inflation remains contained".

But he warned that rapidly-rising house prices, linked to speculation, could add to inflationary pressures.

Analysts had hoped Mr Greenspan would point to a pause in the rate rises.

Bond prices fell while share prices continued to be soft on the news.

The US rate-setting body has increased rates from 1% to 3% in the past year, in a series of 0.25% increases, to try to curb the rapidly-expanding economy.

After his testimony, analysts said they expected another rate rise to 3.25% at the next Fed meeting on 29-30 June.

Russia´s Entente With Iran May BAckfire
Russia has helped Iran to build a nuclear power plant and has agreed to supply plutonium to fuel it. The United States is opposed to the deal because the spent fuel can be used to manufacture weapons-grade plutonium.

Under the accord between Russia and Iran signed in February, Russia will supply nearly 100 tons of nuclear fuel for the massive plutonium reactor it helped build near the southwestern Iranian city of Bushehr. Iran has agreed to return spent nuclear fuel rods to Russia to ensure they will not be converted for military use. But Ilan Berman, an analyst at the American Foreign Policy Council, says the Bushehr power plant is only a public face for a more comprehensive Iranian nuclear program.

Bush Calls For Renewal of Patriot Act Provisions

President Bush has called on Congress to renew key provisions of the Patriot Act, a counterterrorism law passed soon after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Among other things, the provisions allow for sharing of information between intelligence and law enforcement, and for investigators to put roving wiretaps on suspected terrorists.

Civil liberties groups say the Patriot Act infringes on privacy and personal freedoms.

But in a speech in Columbus, Ohio Thursday, Mr. Bush said the 16 provisions set to expire at year´s end are "practical, important, and constitutional."

He said there have been no reported abuses of the powers granted under the act, adding that Congress should make the endangered provisions permanent.

December 2, 2001 - Enron files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection five days after Dynegy canceled a US$8.4 billion buyout bid (as of 2003 this was the largest bankruptcy in the history of the United States).

Citigroup pays $2bn in Enron case

US banking giant Citigroup has agreed to pay $2bn (£1.1bn) to settle a lawsuit brought by shareholders of collapsed energy trading firm Enron.
The class-action suit accused Citigroup of assisting Enron to carry out the huge accounting fraud which bankrupted it in 2001.

Citigroup did not admit liability, and said money already set aside for legal costs would cover the payment.

Citigroup paid Worldcom investors $2.6bn to settle another suit in 2004.

Charles Prince, the bank´s chief executive, said the bank was keen to resolve cases like this one.

"We have an ambitious agenda for Citigroup´s future growth," he said. "It is a key priority for Citigroup... to put a difficult chapter in our history behind us."

Declassified documents show terror suspect Posada, in US custody, plotted against Cuban jet

Newly declassified US documents show that a terror suspect and former CIA asset in US custody, Luis Posada Carriles, said in 1976: "We are going to hit a Cuban airplane" prior to the bombing of a Cubana flight off Barbados October 6 of the same year.

The documents, released Thursday by the private National Security Archive at George Washington University, also say Posada Carriles was used by the CIA as an informer on Cuban exiles in Miami.

Venezuela wants to put Posada Carriles on trial for the downing of a Cubana airliner with 73 passengers aboard in 1976. He escaped a Venezuelan prison while awaiting an appeal of his Venezuelan trial. Cuban-born Posada Carriles is a nationalized Venezuelan.

Now 77, Posada Carriles has been under arrest in the United States since May 17 on immigration charges after he requested US political asylum.

Other declassified US documents released last month link Posada Carriles to the bombing of the Cubana jet. They also said he worked for the CIA at least from 1965 until June 1976.

Caracas and Havana are urging Washington to extradite Posada Carriles to Venezuela.

The United States has said it would not extradite Posada Carriles to Cuba or any country acting in Cuba´s name -- in a clear reference to Venezuela, a close ally of Havana.

In 2000, Panama convicted and sentenced Posada Carriles to eight years in prison for trying to kill Castro at a summit in the Central American country, but he was pardoned in 2004.

Cuba also wants Posada Carriles for the 1997 bombings of Havana hotels, one of which killed an Italian tourist. Posada Carriles admitted in a New York Times interview that he plotted the bombings, though he later recanted the admission. But Cuba has said it supports Posada´s extradition to Venezuela.

In Washington, meanwhile, the Venezuelan government on Friday delivered to the US State Department "a large amount of additional information from Venezuelan judicial organisms on the facts and circumstances showing Luis Posada Carriles´ active participation in the aggravated homicide of 73 persons, including a pregnant woman, in the terrorist attack against a Cubana de Aviacion flight," the embassy said in a statement. Caracas reiterated its request that Posada be held pending extradition.

BULL SHIT

That US people believe in this shit, I agree,
But that Dutch people, who are mostly, just as us Belgians, high to very high educated start to believe in this shit scares me off.

Dozens die in China hotel blaze

A fire has killed 31 people and injured 15 at a hotel in Shantou, in the south Chinese province of Guangdong, state media report.
Firefighters took three hours to put out the blaze which engulfed the upper floors of the four-storey building at noon on Friday.

As an investigation got under way, the causes were not immediately clear.

An initially low death toll was revised after bodies were discovered during a search of gutted rooms.

Four of the injured at the Huanan Hotel were in a serious condition, according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

Details of the guests at the city centre hotel, said to be managed by a Hong Kong company, were not given.

Huang Huahua, governor of Guangdong Province, directed the rescue operation and later visited the injured, Xinhua adds.
