OP, this was one of the questions that no one yet has been able to answer...been asking for many decades myself, not that I care anymore.

Reason is, it just isn't factual and it can't be...other than blind beLIEf. You can't backdate a personal relationship with a religious person.

But it did get the Catholic church a whole lot of money selling indulgences so some poor(er) soul could give them money now to account for and save the past family members. I believe at the height, they actually gave them some kind of certificate.

(The gate is narrow because it's only through faith in Jesus Christ, who he is, what he did, and why he did it. The way is narrow because it's a way mapped out by the commandments of God. The proof that you have been saved and come into a faith based relationship with Jesus Christ is that you will start walking in the narrow way, not being perfect, but by the power given to you by the Holy Spirit you will over come sin in your life progressively day by day, The way will gradually get narrower and narrower)

You know in your heart that there may be something true about this, if you still think it's absolute foolishness then the Holy Spirit has not yet done a work in your heart (inner most being) and you are in a terrifying position my friend.
