WTF? Apple's iPad may allow the news industry a "re-set" and to START CHARGING FOR CONTENT after years of giving it away for free
this is important folks

Tablet computers such as Apple's iPad may allow the news industry a "re-set" and to start charging for content after years of giving it away for free, a senior News Corp. executive said Friday.

News Corp. chief digital officer Jon Miller also said it was too early to make any judgements about the experiment of News Corp.'s The Times with a paid website but charging online readers was "an idea whose time has come."

"A year ago, we were pretty out front with the idea that content has value," Miller told an audience of top technology and media executives at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference here.

Now, he said, "it's accepted at a variety of levels. It's more about how it gets done."

News Corp.'s Wall Street Journal already charges a subscription fee for full access to WSJ.com and News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch has said he eventually plans to charge online readers of all of the titles in his newspaper stable.

"Dual revenue streams are good businesses," Miller said of a combination of subscription fees and online advertising

It's coming!!

Free news from domestic sources (US) will disappear quickly once it hits (will probably have about a 5 year transition - but 5 years is "quickly" imo).

Be prepared to be a lot less informed!!

If the mainstream media begins charging for its "news," the public will shift all the more to alternative news sources.

What's the problem. As longs dumbass's drink the kool-aid spewed by the MSM you should'nt care.

If you're on this site you should already know where to get the real news.

MSM charging for their propaganda is perfect for the sheep.

Pay them to dumb you down. lIke anything else if the market pays it will work, if people wise up and don't pay it will remain/return to free propaganda.

I don't buy/subscribe to any rags (newspapers or magazines)

Get the nation to do the same and a small change might get the ball rolling.

well the problem is credibility issue of the alternative news sources

even here on GLP no one will take an article seriously unless it's linked to a "credible" news source

what if those "credible" sources start charging anyone who want to get the latest news update?

then we may turn to the foreign sources which may or may not be seen as "credible"!

in either case it's obvious that hampering free and open communication is the Target of TPTB here
