i could be wrong here but i thought originally the the thread was about the jobs going elsewhere and not to the residents who need the cash????? peace
 Quoting: danman

That's what I thought as well.

But no one else has also mentioned that at least part of the expense for prisoner upkeep is being paid by BP. Should actually make the taxpayers happy to save some money on the expense of prisoners and that they are actually working for their keep.

I won't get into the whole "it's toxic" stuff as most likely the prisoners were told ahead of time and had to "work" to get on the chain gang most likely they could have opted out of working at the Gulf. (I don't know, but knowing how sue happy everyone is, the prisons probably made them sign a type of release from harm statement...again, only my guess).

i didnt say i was against the work, hey more power to them, they might actually be able to afford some commissary now..what i was bitching about was the generalization people were making about people in jail..alot of them WERE wrong place wrong time...alot of them are just dopesmokers...definitely some people need to be locked up executed etcetc but here in america the lockup rate is disproportionate to the crime,,,just saying..

You don't have a clue!!

Do you, honestly, believe that the prisoners were given an explanation of the hazards of cleaning up the Gulf before they agreed to work?

Do you really think that? You say "guess" but it still is a highly STUPID statement. I don't usually respond to other posters is this harsh a manner.

 Quoting: Smilin' Irish Eyes

As to the first statement:

"Work release inmates are required to work for up to twelve hours a day, six days a week, sometimes averaging seventy-two hours per week. These are long hours for performing what may arguably be the most toxic job in America. Although the dangers of mixed oil and dispersant exposure are largely unknown, the chemicals in crude oil can damage every system in the body, as well as cell structures and DNA.

Inmates can't pick and choose their work assignments and they face considerable repercussions for rejecting any job, including loss of earned "good time." "

As to the second statement:

"Beach cleanup is a Sisyphean task. Shorelines cleaned during the day become newly soaked with oil and dispersant overnight, so crews shovel up the same beaches again and again. Workers wear protective chin-to-boot coveralls (made out of high-density polyethylene and manufactured by Dupont), taped to steel-toed boots covered in yellow plastic. They work twenty minutes on, forty minutes off, as per Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety rules. The limited physical schedule allows workers to recover from the blazing sun and the oppressive heat that builds up inside their impermeable suits."

So they're "expendable"? Remember there are no survivors of the exxon valdez spill.
........

Hiring prison labor is more than a way for BP to save money while cleaning up the biggest oil spill in history. By tapping into the inmate workforce, the company and its subcontractors get workers who are not only cheap but easily silenced—and they get lucrative tax write-offs in the process.

Link: [link to www.thenation.com]

Ben Jealous??? (what kind of fake name is that???) needs to go down and check out all the guards wearing brown suits. They're all African. sitting down not doing a thing, Every one has cleared out, left, gone, This was never about 'cheap clean up' it's about the unions thugs washing money their way..they rented out the labor not bp.. simple as that. always about some race.. how long are they going to milk that cash cow?

Union thugs? How do unions play into day labor? Are you telling me that these workers have been placed on BP payroll at full-time employees with benefits?

Do you think I am crazy? Or, am I?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1047611

NO they are only work release.. the middle men are the ones who are union thugs..and that's what they are. every one of them...

If I'm not clued in, I'd like to be. I don't live there now and don't plan to visit anytime soon. This disaster affects all of us, particularly those who live in the SE.

Yes, it's a circus and BP is the Barnum Bailey ringmaster, apparently telling the government what BP will, or will not, do.

Because I don't live there, I'm not eligible to file charges against BP officials and government personnel for direct responsibility.

Do you have any local or state laws they can be charged under for this. If you drive and tear up someone's property, you are liable, aren't you? And if you don't pay, and the insurance company doesn't pay, then you go to court and take assets of the responsible party for damages.

You know what? You are right, I most likely don't have a clue what goes on with prison work release programs. I will gladly, proudly and happily admit that I don't know anyone who has been in jail nor prison.

My view comes mostly from the corporate world with OSHA regulations that have to be posted and that if you are about to do something dangerous you are knowingly doing it.

So do carry on, sorry to have added my own little humble opinion.

Good night!

Are you fucking kidding me??? Inmates have better 'healthcare' than MOST middle-class to low-income Americans that can't stand to take the government's hand-outs. Besides, we're ALREADY paying for their continued existence.

These same inmates, also get 3 SQUARE MEALS a day... which is more than I get... I'm lucky to get ONE square a day, and that's because I'm stuck living within MY means, which is more than I can say for most of the American populace.

Shut the fuck up... inmates HAVE no rights, you moron, they gave them up when they commited whatever crime landed them jail in the first place. Go back under your rock.

Three stars for this poster with the Japanese flag!

He is right.

And that is the way it once was in this country, you could provide for yourself and live your life without ever going to "establishment" schools and playing the game.

Then, we became industrialized and schooling became a legal requirement.

The US has hundreds of thousands of people in prison who should not be there.

Example: One local guy, a drunk, was put in prison for a year. One year, for us to support. He never stole anything, he never robbed anybody. He didn't even panhandle because there were places he could go and eat.

Why was he locked up? Because new people in the area (Yankees) didn't like seeing him sleeping in back of a local building where he slept in good weather for a number of years.

His law violation: Vagrancy! State prison for one year!

The US has hundreds of thousands of people in prison who should not be there. What "the system" is doing is making sure that there are enough inmates so that the private corporations running the prisons have enough population to support a bottom-line profit FROM OUR TAX DOLLARS!

Work each one them to death. It'll save the taxpayers a hell of alot of money while making them pay their debt to society.

Yes yes, I'm not speaking about those that have been wrongly accused/convicted. That's our system in error. I'm speaking about those that 100% deserve whatever justice their crimes deserved. Like that guy in Utah that got the firing squad. More (haha, this is a nice oxymoron) 'legit' criminals should take that guy's example and just opt to get offed.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE. JAIL IS DIFFERENT FROM THE PEN.

IF A PERSON IS HELD IN JAIL FOR A MISDEMEANOR, THEN THEY'D BE EXEMPT FROM GOING TO THE GULF.

HOWEVER, IN SOME JAILS, CONVICTS ARE HELD OVER UNTIL CORRECTIONS CAN FIND A PEN FOR THEM.

IF THEY ARE BEING HELD OVER TO GO TO THE PEN...THEY'VE EARNED A TICKET TO THE GULF. CASE CLOSED!

IF AN EX CON HAS PRIORS AND IS BEING HELD IN JAIL...THEY GO TO THE GULF!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 950379

cowgal Screw that. If someone is sentenced to a few years in clink thats one thing. The fact is that it's a death job and they don't have to do it, and I hope that they have enough sense to refuse to go. A few extra dollars a week just ain't worth it.

Well if they were not properly informed of the hazards associated with the work as required and were not properly trained to work with hazardous materials through haz mat training as required by OSHA. Then they have every right to sue the state, company they are working for and BP just like every other citizen does. The state has the responsibilty to ensure work conditions are within acceptable ranges as established by OSHA.
This is not Iran, Russia or China.

EVERY CONVICT IN THE USSA PROCLAIMS THEIR INNOCENCE! THIS, DESPITE MOUNTAINS OF EVIDENCE. SEND EM TO THE GULF AND LET THEM REAP WHAT THEY'VE SOWN!

I'M TALIKING ABOUT PENITENTUARIES.

YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT JAILS!

IF A PERSON IS THROWN IN JAIL FOR A MISDEMEANOR THEN I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THEY DESERVE A STAY OF EXECUTION AT THE GULF.

HOWEVER, IF THEY'VE HAD PRIORS AND BEEN IN THE PEN BEFORE, THEN OFF TO THE GULF THEY WILL GO! SAME WAY WITH PAROLE VIOLATORS. IF A CONVICT VIOLATES THE TERMS OF PAROLE...THEY GO TO THE GULF!

As cops wife I feel the need to remind you that they put them selves there and if they are guilty a judge or jury keeps them there, I know there are cases were people are wrongly accused, but LEO does not sentence a person. I am sorry, my husband has a job most would not have and the damn city bus drivers here start out making more money than LEO it is a sore subject with me.

SPEAKING OF WHICH...

COPS WHO BREAK THE LAW AND ABUSE THEIR AUTHORITY EARN A TICKET TO THE GULF.

THEY WILL BE SEGREGATED WITH THE MOST HARDNOSED CONVICTS AND WILL HAVE TO PUT UP WITH GETTING BUTT FUCKED, TOSSING SALADS, ETC.

COPS NOW A DAYS ARE SOMETIMES WORSE THAN CONVICTS.

I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT IF YOUR HUSBAND IS GOING AROUND TAZING GRANNYS AND WHEELCHAIR BOUND PEOPLE, ETC...HE'S GOING TO THE GULF AND STAY THERE TIL HE DIES.
