know the real damage they can do... I think that the right to carry a weapon is of utmost importance and SHOULD be a RIGHT. But make sure folks (children especially) realise the damage is'nt like it is in the "movies".  The aspect children and others miss is the fact that what is damaged with a gun is permanent. No ands, ifs or buts! Yeah, and when a criminal uses it to damage YOU, and you have no way of defending yourself, then what... ??? Damn right what is damaged with a gun is permanent. I'm counting on the criminals to know that. I agree. I've carried a weapon ALL my adult life. The damage it does to the criminal SHOULD be permanent. A firearm is a tool. It's not meant to WOUND. It's meant to KILL. And should be used in the manner intended.
