Tornado in Iceland
Travelling through Iceland on July 15th I noticed a storm cloud, which in itself is unusual for Iceland. As I got into the car I noticed a small funnel shaped cloud stretching towards the ground. I immediately jumped out of the car and told my partner to get her camera. I saw the twister touch down briefly but due to the camera start up delay I missed the money shot. The gps location as accurate as I can give was Hnit: 64° 4,077'N, 19° 46,172'W (ISN93: 462.435, 396.322) and the funnel cloud occured south of us. Photo available here... [link to yfrog.com] I am currently trying to track down the driver of the car to see if they managed to get any additional photos.

Re: Tornado in Iceland
How is the weather in general there? The temperature? I find it a bit strange at this latitude.

I found a similar event from 2007 (30 july)

"A tornado, which is a very rare sight in Iceland, was spotted on Skeidarársandur plane of sand in south Iceland of Friday. The tornado touched the ground for about five minutes and whirled up sand and dust."

Re: Tornado in Iceland
I certainly agree it was no F5, but I thought it warranted a post as it is an unusual event here.
Volcano is quiet now. Earthquakes have been very strange tho, i would expect a major event within six months if current trends continue to escalate

You expect this major event in which region? Mýrdalsjökull, Tjörnes fracture zone or Vatnajökull?

I'm not icebound alien but Vatnajokull has had increased activity ever since eyafjallajokull stopped. We have an inkling that a vent may be leading the magmar towards vatna.

About two weeks before the first volcanic eruption this year, there was the first thunder storm with lightning here in around 30 years. Something is definitely going on here.

Re: Tornado in Iceland
It is very difficult to predict where the next event will be as many areas are showing signs of unrest. My main concerns would be for Bárðabunga and of course Katla because of its past history with Eyjafjallajökull eruptions. Thr fault zones are numerous and complex so we may yet be surprised

I think this one was over the sea? We call them water sockets and they happen here as well, but not very often.

I would like to clarify that this was not anywhere near the sea.
