I wonder sometimes if he was intentionally infected with tuberculosis.

Basically in 1984 most of the industrial production went towards armaments fighting permanent wars because it was a way to keep productivity going while destroying what was produced - basically it was a way to keep people employed without raising their standard of living.

Notice how there's never enough money for health care, or pensions or roads but plenty around if another country needs invading.
