Archaeologists Uncover John the Baptist Relics in Bulgaria's Sozopol - Report
[link to www.novinite.com]

Parts of St. John the Baptist's relics might have been discovered during archaeological excavations in Bulgaria's southern Black Sea town of Sozopol, report Bulgarian media.

Archaeologists investigating the Sv. Ivan (St. John) island off Sozopol have found an exquisite reliquary – a relic urn – built in the altar of an ancient church bearing the name of St. John the Baptist

The reliquary has the shape of a sarcophagus and is dated end of 4th - beginning of 5th c. AD. It was discovered by the team of Prof. Kazimir Popkonstantinov.

The church's name, as well as the fact that it had a special emperor's statute issued, has hinted to archeologists that it might actually contain St. John's relics. The urn is expected to be opened Sunday.

St. John the Baptist - called also the Forerunner - is an imposing figure in the Christian New Testament. He was the last to prophecize the coming of Jesus Christ - and the one to baptize the young Jesus in the river Jordan. The great prophet died a martyr's death beheaded by king Herod at the request of his daughter Salome.....

Mark 1
John the Baptist Prepares the Way for Jesus
1The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.[a]
2It is written in Isaiah the prophet:
"I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way"—
3"a voice of one calling in the desert,
'Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.' "[c] 4And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I baptize you with[d] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

If true, it will be some or all of his earthly remains. His head sadly will not be with it, because that is in the possession of Rome.

Alot of assuming going on here.

It was common during the second and later centuries, for the church to 'claim' they had the burial site or bodies of various saints, regardless of who was actually in the tomb. Most often they possessed just a finger or some other body part...trying to impress the little folk.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to prove who lies in the grave. All depends on what you want to believe.

Well turkey houses John the baptists arm in the worlds third most important religious site for muslims. So if Bulgaria wants to claim a relic or two go ahead.

You read Bulgaria but you must think Byzantium at that time. So it is as legitimate as any other western or easten Roman province.

Damascus has the head no?

When JPII visited Damascus he visited the shrine with the head of St. John the Baptist.

JOhn Paul II visited about 15 years ago.

This is a sign that its about to start. I've come to know that the 2 witnesses are descendants of John and Jesus. I know this post sounds a bit crazy and blasphemous. I'm just putting this out here.

Relics may be remains as well. Usually it only a body "part" when it is referred to as a "relic," such as a tooth. a petrified finger, etc.

I have visited Bulgaria a few times and there is some really crazy shit there!

You can find tombstones from 7000 B.C.

A ton of different cultures they joke there that to find shit all you have to do is just dig.

When they were building the metro system for the capital archeologists had huge fight with the mayor because the path of the metro was on the remains of a roman city.

In fact they preserved some of it - it is funny when you go in the subway system and you see a store that's inside of an ancient building perfectly preserved.

Also there were few claims about finding "Noah's Ark" in the Black Sea, while I don't know how true it is - it is proven that the remains found in the Black Sea were over 6000 B.C. old - so that's pretty impressive.
