Nearly untreatable strain of E. Coli now in U.S.
Emerging Escherichia coli Sequence Type ST131 Causes Many Antimicrobial-Resistant Infections in U.S.

"A recent study has revealed that a new, drug-resistant strain of E. coli is causing serious antimicrobial-resistant infections in the U.S. The new strain, ST131 has been reported in multiple countries and encountered all over the United States."

"In the study, researchers analyzed resistant E. coli isolates collected during 2007 from hospitalized patients across the country. They identified 54 ST131 isolates, which accounted for 67 percent to 69 percent of E. coli isolates exhibiting fluoroquinolone or extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance."

"If we could discover the sources of this strain, the transmission pathways that allow it to spread so effectively, and the factors that have led to its rapid emergence, we could find ways to intervene and possibly slow or halt this strain's emergence," said study author James Johnson, MD, of the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.

"If this strain gains one additional resistance gene," Dr. Johnson added, "it will become almost untreatable and will be a true superbug, which is a very concerning scenario.

Probably not in the literal sense. However if an outbreak of a pair of drug-resistant, virulent strains of each appeared in the same area, the death rates may go up in people infected with both organisms.

Re: Nearly untreatable strain of E. Coli now in U.S.
I swam at Grand Bend Beach, Ontario around 2002 the day before the beach was shut off due to Lake Huron e coli outbreak. I was extremely sick for the next few days. The day of the illness, I was bitten by a dog, so I feared it was rabies more than e coli. I called Telehealth Ontario and performed the advise given by them to nurture the illness and ultimately recovered.

Have no idea whether I had the flu, e coli, or something from the dog...

I remember the listeria outbreak. We frequented Maple Leaf products before the outbreak, months leading up to the deaths, we stopped using their meats.

Even today I feel uneasy about it.

Or even the Kashechewan First Nation Reserve in northern Ontario.

-------------
E. coli was discovered in the water of the First Nation as early as October 18, 2005 , sparking widespread coverage by media in Canada of the situation. The news of contaminated water was first published by the Timmins Daily Press. Following this, the first announcement regarding possible evacuation of the community came from the federal Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs, who announced on October 24 that after evaluating the situation the First Nation would not be evacuated.

The next day, on October 25, the Government of Ontario announced that it would evacuate all people of Kashechewan requiring medical attention. This was estimated to be roughly 60% of the First Nation's 1,900 members, who would travel to Timmins, Cochrane, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Capreol and other Northern Ontario communities for medical aid.[8] Some of these evacuees included children diagnosed with scabies and impetigo.

Phil Fontaine, chief of the Assembly of First Nations, has stated that over 100 aboriginal communities in Canada are currently living under permanent, long-term boil-water advisories.
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

In January 2007, 21 young people in Kashechewan — including one nine-year-old — attempted to commit suicide.[13] On February 7, MP Charlie Angus (NDP—Timmins-James Bay) spoke in the Canadian House of Commons about the crisis, calling on the government to deal with the crisis and to increase education funding to help improve special education and crisis counselling services in First Nations schools.

Studies have estimated that the suicide rate among Canadian First Nations is five to six times higher than among non-aboriginal Canadians
