3.0 EARTHQUAKE IN LOUISANA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 736749 Puerto Rico 08/02/2010 01:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I wonder if that big gas/oil pocket under the USA is depleted yet?... Quoting: PosterchildHaving not getting farther than your post in this thread, I'll just say that I've been pondering some things. Let me say right away that quakes in that area are usually seen after the onsurge of water weight from tropical storms, at least, I've seen it before. - btw, I don't think the recent/current venting has made a dent...wasn't the pocket stated as 30 sq mi, or something? I dunno. I think the real human impact on any seismic activity in the La./GoM region is the years of pumping out the oil, in the Gulf, and onshore in La, Tx. Ark, Ok, etc. But what's been on my my mind the natural state of the Mississippi Delta; it's naturally a subsidence zone. I forget how much NO has sunk over the years. Anyway, I'm of the opinion of greater interconnectedness, over a larger area, of faults situated above river basins and the Gulf, covering, basically, all of the NA continent, but specifically the entire Miss., Ohio, Missouri River wateshed areas, the Great Lakes [& bisected by the Ardvison Linament (from ~ Charleston, through Yellowstone, to Van Isle).... ...and what's REALLY been on my mind is there being an underground connection somewhere from the Gulf gas deposit and the Hugoton NG Area and the CONSEQUENCES of them using a nuke [+, the possible of them collapsing caverns & creating a tsunami]. It's obvious from reports this weekend that the seabed around the wellhead is softer than it was; the seabed losing lock-in Methane Hydrates. Many of the newer images (when cameras aren't switched off) show a very high content of Methane, indicated cold, recently sublimated Methane Hydrates evaporating from the seabed, lingering near the seabed because of its cold temperature. Furthermore, the Oil Reservoir below has not been pumped-in to offset the crude and Methane that bled off without being replaced during the 93-day leak. This displacement causes slumping within the compression zone just north of the wellhead from sediment-loading on shore, effecting basin down-warping just offshore. The fact that this earthquake happened well inland simply shows there is isostatic uplift at the "earthquake site" that's offsetting the salts and soils slumping downward toward the basin, the wellhead area and reservoir below. Did you ever build a sandcastle? You probably remember that if you make the underlying sand too soft and then remove some of the sand at the base of the sandcastle and underlying sand, the sandcastle would begin to shift. That's what's happening here, and is a reason for concern: EFFECTS OF NATURAL FAULT MOVEMENT ON LAND SUBMERGENCE IN COASTAL LOUISIANA [link to www.csc.noaa.gov] _ Here's a six month map for the SE, Central US [link to folkworm.ceri.memphis.edu] "There are 305 earthquakes on this map." |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1043635Yeah being a southerner DOES mean you should be more polite to people, especially to begin with. If they persist with attacking you, etc...THEN unleash the beast lol. But OP wasn't attacking you in any way. And he also isn't mixed up OR talking crazy shit! Earthquake acctivity is increasing ALL OVER the planet. IT pays to keep up and keep your eyes open! Free your mind and the rest will follow. a FAULT IN MY FIELD 4' User ID: 1055507 United States 08/02/2010 03:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm going to check a fault in my field. I figured it was from the rising of lfood waters and taking some of it back to river, it used to be flat and now it is 4' lower/ ok may 2'. I'm going to check. lemme know what you think. Y'alll have taught me to be more specific and scientific about things. Just cause I see, does not mean that I draw the correct conclusions. and thanks to all. love ya karen/la |

Why do people feel like they have to belittle someone on the Internet? A 3.0 is rare for Louisiana. Look it up. And with everything else going on, it seems they can't catch a break. Geesh. Lighten up, people. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1056078 United States 08/02/2010 07:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I haven't read through all of the replies but I think this stems from the New Madrid fault. An earth science professor that I had a couple of classes with was concerned about the New Madrid fault even back in 1976. He said that 2 thousand pounds of silt were being deposited where the Mississippi River enters into the Gulf every day, and that eventually it would cause another earthquake comparable to the big one that formed Reelfoot Lake way back when. But I do have to say that he was crazy because he and his wife did a double suicide some years ago because their health was bad. I still think that he was a pretty smart man though. |

And with everything else going on, it seems they can't catch a break. Geesh. Lighten up, people. Thank you for sticking up for me! Not to worry, I don't give two shits about the morons (note my spelling of this word shills) who don't want to look truth in the eye. If a person wants to look the other way or deny the truth, I don't understand why they are here. If they don't like the kind of threads here, why bother coming. Meanwhile, BP is doing their usual maneuvers, cancelling the top kill they were to start this evening to do some tests. Yeah right. They probably have been doing the tests since yesterday, with all the eruptions going on down there over the last day. After all, they were supposed to start the kill this evening so it only serves to reason that they were testing the last day. Is that related to the EQ? I have no idea. I'm no expert and don't profess to be. I don't know how these people can watch those cams and see what is going on, knowing we are only seeing what they let us see, and not have great concern about an EQ in Louisiana even if it is ONLY a 3.0. They don't have to worry, I'll do it for them because I actually do give a crap about what is happening to the Gulf and the people who live there. I hope I never get to say "I told you so". Again, thanks AC 1056009. Wish there were more of you on this site. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 671825 United States 08/02/2010 08:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | don't feel bad i have had epic fail moments numerous times on GLP. i say to myself "OMG WHY ISN'T MY THREAD PINNED!" then i see one with a nearly identical title that was posted and pinned 4 hours before mine. its good to know im not alone! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1053699I thought for a moment I was insane when my search did not pick up any other threads...LOL. I thought this site went straight to hell. As it was I am shocked that the other thread was so far behind the time of the earthquake...Everyone must be partying or sleeping tonight. idiot - starting a thread about a mag 3 eq is an epic fail seriously, a 3 !!!?? you can barely feel that Dude...you're the idiot for thinking OP is an idiot for posting. As many have stated, a 3.0 in Louisiana is VERY RARE. Also, given the recent oil spill and the concerns regarding that deposit, it is a bit more concerning. So, why don't you go back to humping kangaroos (or koalas), or whatever it is you people do for fun in New Zealand. |

The quake was very close to, if not on, the New Madrid. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1043058If you haven't read the thread about the gulf + the New Madrid, highly recommend! Thread: GOM & THE COMING MADRID EARTHQUAKE I must have been sleepwalking all day. I didn't connect to this thread until now. I was reading on Oiled in Florida's site and the same reference was listed there and then I remembered the reference to the article here. Here is the link to the article for the subject information in the GLP post above. [link to www.aapg.org] This is really interesting. At the top of the article there is a map. It appears that the earthquake and the DWH well may both be located on the Cretaceous Shelf Edge, which is thought to be connected to the New Madrid Fault. Take a look. |
