CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. --

An unmanned Air Force space plane resembling a small space shuttle has been launched into orbit from Florida.

An Atlas 5 rocket carried the reusable X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle aloft at 7:52 p.m. EDT Thursday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The Air Force said the launch was a success, but released no details of the mission's progress. Just over three minutes into orbit, the nose cone of the rocket separated and underneath was a mini-space shuttle.

The mini-shuttle is not configured to carry astronauts. It takes a big rocket to carry the X-37, which is 29 feet long and weighs 11,000 pounds. The mini-shuttle has a cargo bay that is approximately the size of the bed of a pickup truck and may be able to carry small satellites.

The X-37 was originally a NASA project intended to carry six astronauts, but it was handed over to the Air Force a few years ago. The Air Force will only say the X-37B will be used for research in space and other classified purposes.
