Economics of Eating: No Hunger on 50 cents per day!

Get some food grade plastic pails.

Wash them out, dry them and store unopened bags of flour, dried beans/peas and lentils.

At worst, you can use then bit by bit over the winter.

You can save by making purchases when they go on sale.

Dumpster diving.

I used to have a job at a local zoo in the summer (college daze) and we would get a weekly truck load of meat and food stuffs from the local supermarket.

Some we could use, the rest was trash.

There was all sorts of canned and prepared foods, pastas, breads etc that went in the trash because of the best before date.

So they gave this stuff to the zoo, and the meat, eggs and fruit and veggies were welcome, but the rest could have gone to a homeless shelter and they would have had good food.

I notice that supermarkets padlock their bins.

Why?

So poor and desperate people won't get the food for free.

my son and I are making it off of $50 per week and he is a teen (likes to eat) and that 50 includes toliet paper, dish soap clothes soap, and dog food... and anything else we need other than basic bills.

You could put "50 cents per day", that should be clear to everybody. Or "$0.50 per day", should be clear too.

This is a month long (ongoing at this time) series. Each day the author has to find a way to eat at least 2,000 calories on as little money as possible.

Could you do it? (Probably! I have faith in my fellow GLP'ers!)

With hard economic and environmental times upon us, (very soon, already
started in most places) it seems wise to have an action plan, to know what can
be done to survive and to not make things worse in the world, if that is at all
possible.

So my first idea is pretty simple, at least on paper, find out how much I can
reduce my food budget for a month and document it, so that others can see for
themselves what might be done, and mainly so that I can find out how hard (or
easy) it is to do.
Not wanting to wait too long for perfect conditions, because after all,who gets perfect in hard
times? I have decided to begin this trial, test (whatever it should be called...) on August first,
2010. This gives me about two weeks from the point of the original idea to the start of the
project.

In practical terms this means eating on somewhere between 48 and 80 cents per day for a
whole month. (See the “Rules” below for why it has to be so high...)
