Pax (OP) User ID: 510028 United States 08/06/2010 04:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get some food grade plastic pails. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1059683Wash them out, dry them and store unopened bags of flour, dried beans/peas and lentils. At worst, you can use then bit by bit over the winter. You can save by making purchases when they go on sale. I already keep everything in air tight plastic bins. Since I live deep in the countryside surrounded by grain crops, mice are a huge problem! So all food gets sealed in bins, including animal feed. I have to say I am really interested in the use of nitrogen gas for long term storage though. This just makes sense, to keep a few months or more fod on hand at all times, especially if it can be done for less than a hundred dollars or so, maybe two hundred? I know, if I can find a good source, a mill or something, that buying in bulk will really help a lot. maybe a food co-op if I can find one? After this month my food budget will relax, though, I think. After all, this is just a test to see how well very inexpensive eating works, what problems come up and so on. A lot of people talk about such things, but I find that doing it is teaching me so much more than I thought it would. I will try mainly adding more vegetables and fruits for a while and still keep the cost per day down to under two or three dollars. While i am used to eating a lot of vegetables in the normal course of things, I can't say I really miss them yet. No particular hunger or strong food cravings so far! |
Pax (OP) User ID: 510028 United States 08/06/2010 06:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wow! I won't mention the site name, but someone at another (generally more polite than this one...) web board just freaked on me AND sent me an e-mail about it (which is how I know about it at all) saying that I am EVIL for running this experiment! Apparently I am showing people that meat and dairy are too expensive and this is ticking someone off! LOL! I am so writing about this today. I never expected anyone to call me EVIL for following a strict budget! I guess there all types in the world, but I don't understand this one at all. But be warned I guess, being frugal is now a sin in the eyes of the lord! (To good Christians that don't believe this, please note, I am quoting the e-mail I was sent.) |

Pax (OP) User ID: 510028 United States 08/06/2010 08:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | wisebread.com has some really good ideas on eating cheap. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 975536I also like their forum really good ideas there. I took a look at the site and while it does not have a lot that really relates directly to what I am currently doing (Most of their suggestions are too "rich" for this project!) it seems to have a lot of information about saving money in general. I recommend people go and give it a look! Well, if they are interested in saving money that is. *I have no affiliation with wisebread.com what so ever and never heard about it before today. Still, it seems like it is worth taking a look at. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1054817 United States 08/06/2010 09:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dumpster diving. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1058537I used to have a job at a local zoo in the summer (college daze) and we would get a weekly truck load of meat and food stuffs from the local supermarket. Some we could use, the rest was trash. There was all sorts of canned and prepared foods, pastas, breads etc that went in the trash because of the best before date. So they gave this stuff to the zoo, and the meat, eggs and fruit and veggies were welcome, but the rest could have gone to a homeless shelter and they would have had good food. I notice that supermarkets padlock their bins. Why? So poor and desperate people won't get the food for free. Even if you return canned goods and unopened non-perishable food they will throw it right out. They say this is just in case someone has tampered with it and then if anyone eats it and gets sick the store can get sued. So sad. |

I haven't fallen off the wagon or given up! We had wild fires take down the power grid for a few hundred homes in my area, and lucky me, my home was one of them! Provided the power stays on there will be an update in about an hour. Tomorrows updates (I will be doing two days tomorrow) will be, I hope, interesting, as I get to go over trying to survive on .50 cents of food with no way to cook anything... (Wild fires mean nothing with flame can be used safely!) Did it though! My apologies to anyone that went looking for an update, or to read the new daily article that didn't apear, they will be there shortly! |

Pax (OP) User ID: 500597 United States 08/08/2010 02:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Africa is always hard hit when this happens, as they have the least to spend on food, and right now West Africa is in the middle of a sever drought and famine. Complete with locust attack earlier in the year, making food in some areas incredibly hard to come by already. Most people in the U.S. Even on this board, probably won't catch on to this until it effects them personally. I think it is time to start looking into and setting up Fall gardens. Cold weather vegetables that keep well. Store up some extra flour, rice and oil now, and canned goods if you can afford them. Things don't have to become "DOOM" to get uncomfortable... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 739636 United States 08/09/2010 12:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is a month long (ongoing at this time) series. Each day the author has to find a way to eat at least 2,000 calories on as little money as possible. Quoting: PaxCould you do it? (Probably! I have faith in my fellow GLP'ers!) Clip: With hard economic and environmental times upon us, (very soon, already started in most places) it seems wise to have an action plan, to know what can be done to survive and to not make things worse in the world, if that is at all possible. So my first idea is pretty simple, at least on paper, find out how much I can reduce my food budget for a month and document it, so that others can see for themselves what might be done, and mainly so that I can find out how hard (or easy) it is to do. Not wanting to wait too long for perfect conditions, because after all,who gets perfect in hard times? I have decided to begin this trial, test (whatever it should be called...) on August first, 2010. This gives me about two weeks from the point of the original idea to the start of the project. In practical terms this means eating on somewhere between 48 and 80 cents per day for a whole month. (See the “Rules” below for why it has to be so high...) End Clip. You said on your site that you would be doing something different. Are you open to suggestions? For years I have wanted to put together an emergencies food supply, but didn't ever have the extra cash, but what you are doing I could put together for about twenty bucks a month or less! Thanks for that. |
