NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics. The magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth and protects us from solar wind. Exploring the bubble is a key goal of the THEMIS mission, launched in February 2007. The big discovery came on June 3, 2007, when the five probes serendipitously flew through the breach just as it was opening. The opening was huge-four times wider than Earth itself.

I'm not really technical, and just about understand why a compass needle moves.

Also, I've, as of late, have read some interesting things about the sun and our universe being electricity-based. That some scientists are throwing away the old dogma of sun fusion models, and looking at the solid reasons an electric sun may explain what fusion CANNOT.

How are they produced? Nobel laureate Hannes Alfven, although not aware of the Juergens Electric Sun model, advanced his own theory (3) of how prominences and solar flares are formed electrically.

It is completely consistent with the Juergens model. It too is electrical.

Any electric current, i, creates a magnetic field (the stronger the current - the stronger the magnetic field, and the more energy it contains).

Curved magnetic fields cannot exist without either electrical currents or time varying electric fields. Energy, Wm, stored in any magnetic field, is given by the expression Wm = 1/2 Li ^2.

If the current, i, is interrupted, the field collapses and its energy must be delivered somewhere.

The magnetic field of the Sun sometimes, and in some places on its surface, forms an "omega" shaped loop. This loop extends out through the double sheath layer (DL) of the chromosphere. One of the primary properties of Birkeland currents is that they generally follow magnetic field lines.

A strong looping current will produce a secondary toroidal magnetic field that will surround and try to expand the loop. If the current following the loop becomes too strong, the DL will be destroyed1.

This interrupts the current (like opening a switch in an inductive circuit) and the energy stored in the primary magnetic field is explosively released into space.

2. A magnetic field is a continuum.

It is not a set of discrete 'lines'. Lines are drawn in the classroom to describe the magnetic field (its direction and magnitude). But the lines themselves do not actually exist. They are simply a pedagogical device.

Proposing that these lines break, merge, and/or recombine is an error (violation of Maxwell's equations) compounded on another error (the lines do not really exist in the first place). Magnetic field lines are analogous to lines of latitude and longitude.

They are not discrete entities with nothing in between them - you can draw as many of them as close together as you'd like. And they most certainly do not break, merge, or reconnect any more than lines of latitude do. Oppositely directed magnetic intensity H-fields simply cancel each other - no energy is stored or released in that event.

Cause and effect. It seems to me there are theories and no concensus of opinion. Maybe no one knows the exact cause, but we'll all feel the effects.

BTW, you don't have to believe in a Niburu, but SOMETHING out there has been perterbing every planet it gets close to. Why not the sun and the moon? And Earth!

As I arrive I click the links, see them, and know that I'm looking at things that have almost no effect on each other. X-ray flux and the Magnetosphere.

Then I notice he is posting those links while making a statement, "It's NOT the Sun". This implies he knows what he is talking about and know exactly what the charts mean. And As I've seen so many times, A bunch of you will go here look at it and think ooh he must be right!

Then that thought there spreads and spreads and spreads and causes even more confusion about the sun and it's effects on us.

Which then because I have an interest in this topic I will then come across people saying it more and more, idiots with no brain going into all the threads and posting their idiotic ideas with no basis in fact and understanding, just what they think they know.

And so it spreads more, and some moron posts a youtube video about it and tries to "open people's eyes" about it.

So I'm a little rude, Because of pea-brained idiots making asinine STATEMENTS about things they have no idea about.

Did you watch as the people just followed the popular theory and then as it exploded as many many many videos hit youtube.

Even to this day people still believe that it was nibiru.

And occasionally you see someone mention that comment, and then someone/many people who hadn't seen or heard of it before suddenly spark off with the mis-info.

Things like this come back again and again and again.

While your concerns have some validity, they are in no way objective. Who is doing the most damage: the people who promote fear in others via ignorance and irrationality or the people who correct these mistakes via facts and rationality? Yes, ridicule is sometimes present in these corrections as this is often a reaction to ignorance. I’m guilty of ridicule myself, but I don’t condone it. I can only try and do better. This should not be the main concern however. We should be concerned about the spread of ignorance and this is something that should not be defended.

Ah american, Let me try put it in your terms.

Say you live on the gulf coast and have seen the oil etc.

Then someone from the other side of the world comes along and tells you that there is no oil.

Basically the exact same thing, how would you react to that?

Remember, this person ignores evidence, logic and reason and truely believes what they are saying, ignorant of everything that points towards the opposing opinion.

OTOC, I followed the link to the other threads and ended up on a thread you started with explanations, yesterday. I am not a fool, but did have some issues understanding your explanations. Maybe you could bring it down a level so I can have a better understanding. I do have a bit of comprehension about the difference between the CMEs, solar storms and geomagnetic storms and at which time each affects earth.
