The moon ALWAYS rises in the east on the planet I live on. Yes as you say Having the moon appear in the west will be a neat trick ][nd33d,.... On my planet, moon appears where it is when sunlight fades. So, if at down, when sunlight fades out, the moon is, for example, 40° east from the sun, it will effectively "appear" to the eye on the west. "to rise" and "to appear" have different meaning to me When the moon shows up in the west it is because it has been up in the daytime sky for most of the day. You can't see if because it is a thin crescent and the glare of the sky obliterates it. On the first few days of the moon's cycle it is somewhat east or to the left of the sun. It sets right after the sun. As the cycle progresses, the moon becomes fuller and farther to the east from the sun, taking longer to follow it down to the western horizon. At full phase the moon is opposite of the sky when it rises, sometimes at the same moment the sun sets. From then on the moon comes up later and later each night, waning smaller and smaller until the last crescent rises just before the sun does in the eastern sky. The moon is visible in the daytime sky in both halves of the cycle, if you know where to look. So...The moon chases the sun down at the beginning and is chased up by the sun at the end of the lunar cycle. Last Edited by czygyny on 08/06/2010 08:23 PM Kletos, Eklektos & Pistos |

G.S. Mitchell (OP) User ID: 1058189 Canada 08/06/2010 12:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | where to look? Quoting: R...Up yeah, funny but where's the Perseids? North, south? Sorry Where to Look in the Sky: The meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, which, in North America, rises in the evening in the northeast. You need not look in this direction, however. The Perseids are noted for their long trails and should streak across much of the night sky. Look anywhere from 30 degrees to 80 degrees above the horizon and about 45 degrees away from the constellation Perseus. Where to Watch From: The best place to observe meteors is in an open area (a field, a golf course, etc.) that is unobstructed by trees or other structures and that is far away from lights (streetlights, city lights, etc.). The darker the sky the better. Thin clouds or mist will greatly reduce the number of meteors that one can see. If there are clouds, don't stay up. [link to www.jupiterscientific.org] |

MitchellYou know it's a good night when a beautiful alignment of planets is the second best thing that's going to happen. Thursday, August 12th, is such a night. The show begins at sundown when Venus, Saturn, Mars and the crescent Moon pop out of the western twilight in tight conjunction. All four heavenly objects will fit within a circle about 10 degrees in diameter, beaming together through the dusky colors of sunset. No telescope is required to enjoy this naked-eye event The planets will hang together in the western sky until 10 pm or so. When they leave, following the sun below the horizon, you should stay, because that is when the Perseid meteor shower begins. From 10 pm until dawn, meteors will flit across the starry sky in a display that's even more exciting than a planetary get-together. (continued) Meteor showers are also a good time to see...you know who I saw a Perseid last night! It was a totally White Shooting Star headed for downtown Phoenix. Saw it about midnight. If my websites do not load its because I've been Black Listed like here on GLP - note my signiature below and they won't let me post YouTubes anymore - gee, I wonder why? Welcome to my World... Had to get there via railroad. I always loved the sign greeting us "Metagama Population 7." We always went during the 2nd week of August. And trust me there was no light pollution. One year we counted 230 shooting stars. One was so bright it burned half way across the sky with the sun still shining. Great memories. Thanks OP Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1060016ur a week early Thursday, August 12th, is such a night. Swift-Tuttle's debris zone is so wide, Earth spends weeks inside it. Indeed, we are in the outskirts now, and sky watchers are already reporting a trickle of late-night Perseids. The trickle could turn into a torrent between August 11th and 13th when Earth passes through the heart of the debris trail. |
