We all know someone that’s intelligent, but who occasionally defends obviously bad ideas.
Why does this happen?
How can smart people take up positions that defy any reasonable logic? Having spent many years working with smart people I’ve catalogued many of the ways this happens, and I have advice on what to do about it.
I feel qualified to write this essay as I’m a recovering smart person myself and I’ve defended several very bad ideas. So if nothing else this essay serves as a kind of personal therapy session. However, I fully suspect you’ll get more than just entertainment value (“Look, Scott is more stupid than we thought!”) out of what I have to say on this topic.
...
The problem with smart people is that they like to be right and sometimes will defend ideas to the death rather than admit they’re wrong.
This is bad. Worse, if they got away with it when they were young (say, because they were smarter than their parents, their friends, and their parent’s friends) they’ve probably built an ego around being right, and will therefore defend their perfect record of invented righteousness to the death.
Smart people often fall into the trap of preferring to be right even if it’s based in delusion, or results in them, or their loved ones, becoming miserable.
(Somewhere in your town there is a row of graves at the cemetery, called smartypants lane, filled with people who were buried at poorly attended funerals, whose headstones say “Well, at least I was right.”)

out of the closet as an anonymous coward, as I´m not registered with this board...
as a_seventh_son I used to write quite a bit that made it onto the cassiopaea-l group in the early days before QFS was public; things got a bit edgy when I started questioning the ´STO´ nature of some of what was being said and/or doctrines, plus suggesting similarities with Crowley/Thelema and the C´s teachings, as well as quoting Blavatsky quite a bit in cross-referencing to Cassiopaea material. we kind of mutually decided to stop seeing one another, and I found my way over to matrioshka.
didn´t realize the other, behavioral similarities till I posted that little bit on Madame B a few pages back, which got the wheels turning!
I guess I was rather fanning the flames in retrospect, without realizing it. I post on Vincent´s fwmsdiscussion once in awhile, and used to be a matrioshka regular, though most of my good posts, some great exchanges with Terri and several others were deleted in Wyz´s Great Purge... for awhile there was a real egregore being nurtured and matrioshka was a pretty happenin´ place. oh, and I started a blog recently where I throw out word salads of a mythology that´s sort of built up in my trying to make sense of some of this eschatological stuff - [link to end-of-daze.blogspot.com] if anyone´s interested, enjoy...
keep the thread alive! it´s a neat little bit of history and quite a trip. cool to see some old ´faces´ as well as new ones... nice to have found this place.

I´m afraid not, no psychic or cosmic powers here that I´ll admit to. I adopted the moniker about six years ago, and even though it´s rather unoriginal, I´ve stuck with the name and identity for some reason. being actually a firstborn son in the conventional sense, it seemed inappropriate or misleading. but the more I learned about the name´s origins, the more it appeared as something of a prescient choice.

no doubt, and probably moreso for women, in any kind of psychic development generally. and much more naturally so. actually, Laura struck me as a peculiarly bright natural psychic - the tumultuous life seems to come with the territory at least in adapting inborn ability to cope with this modern ´sophisticated´ age. Tom French´s original article does a nice job of capturing this feel. maybe the pathology too, but I´m no expert in psychology willing to offer up anything of an informed opinion on that. |

this means it´s unix-formatted text, which notepad chokes on. load into a decent word processor (I think even MS Word will handle the conversion) or get a more unix-format friendly notepad replacement such as metapad ( [link to www.liquidninja.com] or something similar and the transcripts will all magically be readable, in full glory (or lack of same).

and post your reactions and relevant transcript segments if you´ve the chance. see if some discussion can keep this thread alive!

Better text editors (e.g. UltraEdit) can handle such files. |
