This happens a lot. For example, did you ever notice that when a witness speaks about seeing a body, they will say, "I thought it was a doll!" or "I thought it was a mannequin!". Then, the cold, hard, truth hits them. Their comforting mind with its comforting thoughts of something not so horrible to imagine comes to light--it was a dead baby, or a dead body they had found.

And in this case, not rope, a dead squid.
