Is the band "Tool" satanic or just philosophical?

Seriously? They like Crowley, their stuff is dark and their video images horrifying and frightening and then they are into the occult and we have an image of one of them sitting in the middle of a pentagram. So we are supposed to think that they are just harmless agnostics and philosophers?

I think the real question to ask is, is there any popular music at all, that is not satanic these days?

They are Esoteric, Enochian, or both.

big difference my friend is how they became popular, who sponsored them. In this case Tool did not need or accept corporate pirates, yes the real pirates. Unfortunately/fortunately the band rose to its heights without all the internet babble.

Occultism sounds like a good description for their most out there stuff. I don't think they're actual satanists per say.

Danny Carey is definitely into the occult... but I don't believe that is satanic. You need to be christian to beleif in satan.

This isn't a Tool interview or even an interview with "the singer of Tool", but still, it's rare to find anything where Maynard talks for 2 and a half hours.

Among many things he discusses, he reads something rather profound at 49:45.

I wonder if that is a by-product of being ass-fucked and preached too at the same time.

I'm over 50 and I have most of their stuff. Awesome band!

I trust my gut instinct and I get a seriously creepy/evil vibe from everything they produce - musically, visually, etc. It makes me feel ill.

And I listen to some hard, heavy rock/metal/stoner music and don't get this vibe from anything else I listen to.

Oh, I'm bummed now. Tool has been my all-time favorite band since Opiate. Just lately I've discovered they're fondness for Crowley who dedicated his book to Satan as well as their demo tape is titled 72826 which is what you get when you dial the word Satan (not me reading into it, they said it).
I believe existence is pure consciousness and we are a portion of that, merely having an experience as Joe/Bob/Mike or whoever in order to learn lessons and graduate to the next level. I also believe organized religion embraces many "truths" about existence, but puts a name on it as God in order to control us.
Never the less I thing there is a dark presence that can be tapped into and hope that isn't their objective, but that (as in Hush) they are "just kidding".
Either way they'll continue you be the greatest to me. It hasn't affected me in 20+ years so I'm immune or else they are just spiritual.
Tool is the only band today that has four individual members who are absolute masters of their craft and amazingly, by playing together, they are not only NOT hindered but actually their talents are increased.

Whether one has any religion or not, as well as if it surrounds Christ set aside. Aliester Crowley was one very f-ing depraved jew in many ways. Aside from Christianity, how many lives/souls were led down the path of hardcore drug abuse and sexual depravity alone. Need we cover all of them? I'm not quite sold on tool may be influenced largely by Crowley. But Crowley and others basicly twist and at times confuse or mislead everything that comes close to or is truth and make fortunes in doing so. "Performance enhancing drugs" are done by many.
