NOSTALGIA – Things have changed so much since I was a little girl…..makes me cry !!!
I was thinking about how drastically life has changed in the last fifty years, last night. Made me VERY melancholy. I actually cried

When I was a little girl, my sister and I used to walk the three blocks to the neighborhood grocery - a very small building that supplied everything my family needed... and it was family owned, NOT a franchise or chain store. The man and his wife who owned the grocery, were the only ones who worked there. They had a big black car that the man used to deliver groceries, if you wanted him to – and didn’t charge extra for the service.

Funny that my mom never worried about us walking that distance alone, and with her money (my sister was 8 and I was 5). Times were different then.

In those days, plastic was "new". Milk came in real glass bottles, laundry detergent came in boxes, Clorox was in big brown bottles. Your grocery items were placed in PAPER bags.

We lived as an extended family in a huge ten room house...my great grand parents, my widowed grandmother, and us. Grandpa always had a big garden in the back yard, 2 peach trees, 2 apple trees, and a grape arbor. We were right in the middle of town, and some neighbors even kept chickens.

All the moms I knew, stayed home, kept house, and took care of their families. Moms were always home when the kids got home from school. Food was always cooked from scratch – there were no “processed” dinners, or fast food joints.

My mom used to play records that were hard, black, and easily broken…. They were “78’s”
Radio was very important to my grandmother.

We walked to church every Sunday, because it was right up the street from our house. We never missed the “ice cream socials” that were held outside in the summer time.
On Sundays, everything was CLOSED…. All stores, businesses… everything.

I remember the family doctor, who used to visit our home to check up on my great grand parents – just because. Any time any of us were ill… he came to the house with his little black bag, and took care of us there.

TV’s were only black and white in those days, and in our little town… TV was only on the air during certain times of the day. Everything was live, and commercials were incorporated into the broadcast, LIVE. Pretty “trippy” thinking back…..

There was a factory down the street from our home, where they made tile, and I used to like to sit outside and watch the people leaving the plant…. Walking past our house to catch the bus home. It seemed like NOBODY drove a car ??? All the men carried little black lunch containers, that all looked the same. LOL

The commercial airplanes flew low and had propellers – boy were they noisy. I actually remember the first time I saw a JET. Passenger trains still ran through our little town, and I remember the first diesel engine that came through… before that, they were big black, smoky, monsters !!!

What really amazes me, now…. Is that when I visit antique shops, I often see my favorite toys displayed with priced tags that blow my mind !!!

All this…. in the fifties !!!!!!!

What do you remember about your childhood??????? 1dunno1

It's just amazing !! My grandmother used to tell me about the things that changed as she grew up.

She lived to see homes that were lighted by gas lights... then electricity. Other things that came about in her life time = phones, cars, radio, TV, planes, microwaves, moving pictures, color TV, men in space, on and on and on......

I can't imagine how hard it must have been way, way back then.

And how I remember THOSE summers !!!! An "eternity" is right.

Now time is flying by so quickly that a week seems only like a day. Why is that?

I could have written this myself! Memories, how I love them. We could play soft ball in the road til dark, catch fire flies, wander all over the neighborhood, never locked the doors at night, left the keys in the car (Daddy could never find them if he took them out), newspapers and milk delivered, old man with his wagon and horse would stop and let us jump on and ride to the end of the block. We went to the ice house, on Sat. night the whole family would park down town and visit!!!! oh, the wonderful days. I think of my grand children that can't leave the t.v. or game boy long enough to know if the sun is still shinning. Sad, yes, so sad. The innocents of a by gone time. My favorite was a "come as you are dressed" to church, (they caught me with rollers in my hair!) for the children that were picked up in a bus, you never knew what day or hour they would come! Thanks for stirring my memories.
If you break my wings, I will just find a cloud and learn to fly again. The Lord will catch you when you fall or teach you to fly! May the footprints I leave lead you to BELIEVE.

Just very appreciative that I am old and had my life when things were still good.

No way would I want to be young in these days.

I love your thread, op

I'm not old enough for the 50s...but I grew up in a small town in the 70s.

I get upset at the changes I've seen. I don't understand how we throw away so much. Everything is cheap and made to break so you have to buy new cheep stuff.

When I bought my couch I got a Lazy boy because my parents told me it was a quality...brand. But right after the warranty expired, the thing started to fall a part. I've got a spring sticking through! And that's just one thing that's wrong with the stupid couch.

What happened to crafting and loving a product that you sell? It's all made in China!

But, my grandmother's old couch is still good as new!

WOW... you just jogged my memory some more.

Me and the kids in my neighborhood (early sixties)would go outside early in the morning and play ALL day. We were allowed to stay out as long as we wanted, but had to be home before dark. I don't know of ONE child that was ever molested, kidnapped, etc.

We liked to play kickball... and played freely in the street. We built forts in the woods, and hunted crawdads in the creek (this was IN TOWN LOL)

My grandchildren have NO idea what "magical" things they could discover by getting their asses off the sofa !!

Yes... we were definitely LUCKY that we grew up when childhood still held the innocence and wonder.......

Thanks for reminding me.

I know what you mean about the JUNK. True "craftsmen" are for sure, a thing of the past !! I would rather buy a good antique than the damned "pressboard" furniture they sell today. And just look at the flimsy houses they build, now.

OMG !! I'm pushing 60 and I can tell you, that YOU will be amazed when you're my age, and you look back on your life.

I really liked that quote that one of the posters here on GLP uses.... "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in, broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, WOW, What a ride!"

VERY GOOD ADVICE !!

OP, you have to admit life was much harder in your day.

Everything from making phone calls, washing clothes/dishes, taking baths/showers, hot water, vacuuming, making food, getting an ambulance, etc....

Also, what if your child was sick on a Sunday...where would you go to get medicine? If your car broke down on the highway...no tow trucks or garages open to get you going until Monday? No thanks.

I think we complain so much about how some things are now days, that we often forget how good we have it as well!

Heaven would be having all those things back. Having all the ones we loved back and everyone be young again in Heaven.
Imagine the great family dinners, the awesome things to do, and Having Father God with us forever and ever.

And all the evil gone. Just spending eternity in love, peace and with all the loved ones and being Young. I cant wait!!!!

Ummmm.... we had a phone when I was a little girl - it was a rotary phone, but I spent a lot of time on that old phone. Making long distance calls was a pain!!

The only dish washer we had was ME. LOL

Our washer was a wringer washer and we dried clothes outside in the summer... in the basement in the winter.

No problem with hot water, vacuuming, or getting an ambulance if necessary. I think there were tow trucks ???

You are definitely right about being SOL on Sundays though.

Life didn't seem hard at all... but then I was a kid. By the time I was a teenager, things were quite different. Things changed in a hurry - in my opinion, people became lazy. ROTFLMAO

Even in my childhood (late 70's) things were so different. I used to disappear all day in the summers, come in for lunch if I was hungry, leave again. Spent my days exploring, climbing trees, playing kickball with other local kids...my fave was making second base a kiddy pool so we could cool off...

Oh cry a fucking river you old hag. Your generation has squandered the greatest amount of wealth the world has ever seen in order to get fat, drunk, stupid, and happy on a massive LIE.

Way to sell out your own children and grandchildren to your entitlements.

Way to go on foolishly believing the democrat/republican paradigm garbage.

Way to allow your country to be taken off the gold standard thus causing inflation, loss of purchasing power which created the illusion of wealth creation.

Way to allow the dismantling of this countries manufacturing and local agriculture starting in the 60s to be shipped overseas.

Oh cry a fucking river.

What will todays generation look back and say?

I remember we would watch Dish Network all day. We had cartoons 24/7 back then.

And when we got tired of TV, we slap a couple hot pockets in the microwave, and break out the XBox.

We'd play halo way into the night... boy thoses were the days.

Saturday mornings, after cereal and cartoons, I would hop and my bike and say "I'm gonna play with my friends mom" and she would say "Okay be home in time for dinner" and off I would go. We never worried about weirdos or gangs or drugs or anything. The closest I came to getting into trouble was when we found a pack of firecrackers in the dumpster and lit them off - I thought for sure the cops were on their way to throw us in jail LOL...

AC1020790... you don't have a CLUE.

I'm a child of the '50's... and I can tell you HONESTLY that this:

"you have to admit life was much harder in your day.

Everything from making phone calls, washing clothes/dishes, taking baths/showers, hot water, vacuuming, making food, getting an ambulance, etc...."

is TOTALLY WRONG! Absolutely NO DIFFERENCE here in the US now as it was back then...if anything getting an Amulance was QUICKER!!

IF you got sick on a Sunday, you went to the Hospital ER; just like people do today. IF your car broke down, well guess what? PEOPLE WERE NICER BACK THEN AND HELPED EACH OTHER OUT; someone would stop and give you a lift, or help to change the tire, or whatever was needed.

Oh and yes... if you couldn't get it repaired on Sunday and had to wait till Monday, well there were always ways to work around it... like the neighbors or a friend giving you a lift to work--people didn't work 50 miles one way from home back then...

Your understanding and vision is very short-sighted, and I am sure you are very young...

I remember going to the local resevoir and catching tadpoles and polywogs and watching them slowly turn into frogs in a jar in the kitchen...

Buying two pairs of new shoes every fall: one for school and one for church...

Going to the YMCA for gymnastics and the end of the year talent show for all the parents...

Leaving doors unlocked, keys in the car, and being shooed out of the house after breakfast on weekends and in the summer and told not to come home until dinner, when the street lights came on... getting handed two bucks for lunch at the Woolworth's downtown and visiting the children's section of the library and being lost in stories for hours...and then walking home or riding the bike home five miles and never a thought about someone out to get you...at the age of 10...

Oh yeah... I'd go back there in a heartbeat...

During the summer, my 3 sisters and I would have breakfast then leave the house for the entire day. We played in the foothills, stole grapes from the vineyards for lunch, went down into the storm drains and roamed around UNDER the town - this was while we were all under 10 years old. The dog went with us, and when dinner time came around, Mom would go out and call the dog - because he could hear a lot better than we could. When the dog told us it was time to go home, home we went.

We never watched TV.
