Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I remember my mother on the Atkins diet, she lost weight quickly and it truly amazed me. The poor guy took a lot of criticism though. Wasn't he a cardiac specialist?

You know looking at the list of recommended food to eat, I can't help but think of my grandma. She didn't have one fat cell on her body, she lived to 88, never a health problem in her life.

She NEVER used margarine, ONLY butter and never skim milk in her coffee but cream. Ate constantly it seemed, always snacking on nuts and fruits. She wasn't one to " work out" or exercise but was in remarkable shape.

It's funny, when she was offered margarine or " healthy " stuff, she would turn her nose up to it, always saying in my day they didn't have margarine, only butter, lord only knows what is in that stuff.. seems like my grandma with her 8th grade education knew better than some.

Yep, Atkins was a cardiac specialist. And yes he took a lot of criticism because he challenged the orthodoxy!

What you mention is called the "French Paradox". The French eat way more fat than anyone else (cheese, butter, cream, whole milk, foie gras - very high fat, etc) and yet they have the lowest rates of heart disease in the Western world and relatively low obesity rates!

This is now starting to change, with substances such as foie gras being frowned on for being so high fat. As French fat consumption is finally succumbing to the propaganda, so their heart disease rates and obesity are beginning to rise!

Also on figures between 2005-2010 the French had a life expectancy of 80.7 years - with the UK on 79.4 and the US trailing on 78.2.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
It's the trans fat that gives you metabolic syndrome. It is slow acting poison.

Trans fat destroys enzyme in liver that make vitamin D. Vitamin D regulates weight through it's control of insulin and leptin.

Vitamin D is critical for the immune system.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1063444

Vitamin D is the BY FAR the most important compound needed by the immune system and most of us are deficient in it. No wonder most stuff we tried did not seem to work. Vitamin D definitely works BIG TIME compared to anything I've ever tried for 20 years.

I only eat plain "bio" yogurt.
But, I can eat about 800 grams a day. I was eating 1.5 % fat.
I will now try the 3%.

Very interesting on the skim milk advice. I use nonfat whipped cream to add to my coffee every morning. Maybe I should buy the regular one instead.

You don't EVER have bread, OP?! I'm about to go eat some sourdough right now, my favorite, but I only have bread several times a week. Can't totally give it up.

Avocado's contain next to no fructose (unlike normal fruits) and are very high fat which makes them perfect. And the fat is good monounsaturated :) They have the second highest potassium content after bananas, but without all the fructose.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Ok question here, if I recall with the Atkins diet ( referring to it because this is the one I am the most familiar with) I think my mother ate as many eggs as she wanted , same with meat.. was way off from what they recommend now ie 4 oz of chicken, or 1 poached egg.. am I remembering this correctly?

Also for some reason, I think that salad was a no on at the time when she was on it? I can't remember exactly, but it was crazy , bacon, fried eggs on butter, tons of red meat, and eat until you were full? I do remember that lots and lots and lots of water was important though.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1030631

Yep, it was a high protein diet, but it was only the induction phase that seriously restricted veggies and salads. It's great for getting started on a low-carb diet and you will lose for a few months but the weight loss quickly grinds to a halt way before you can say that you are truly thin .... or at least that's my experience with it.

Eating as much as you like quickly peters out though. Protein and fats are very filling and 'fight back', which is why you see restaurants offering to give you the meal for free if you eat their HUGE steak. They know its next to impossible. You notice they never say eat a huge amount of chocolate cake. With carbs you can eat, eat, eat and eat! lol The appetite suppression never kicks in.

I still go for the lowest carb veggies though - there are so many to choose from and you can have 400g (a full pound) before you start to come anywhere near a daily carb allowance.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I'd like to add something...

Scorpion is right on a lot of things. I haven't really truly looked into Atkins but I've been reading and experimenting for like 20 years. I go by science based diet that is published in papers. I prefer something that would prevent diabetes and heart disease in the long run and something that is easy to stick to. Paleo diet is probably best all around based on clinical studies for heart disease and diabetes. Unfortunately, big food businesses and drug businesses don't go by science and just rips us off to try and get us to buy crappy "health" food when they aren't really healthy. Pasta, bread, oatmeal cereal, etc anything that are refined carbohydrates. Even sports juice or any drinks with fructose based drinks.

Here is a pretty good website - this guy looks at nutritional studies very carefully and explains to us why it's right or wrong because those papers tend to be ...wordy and boring. It's like foreign language to most people. [link to wholehealthsource.blogspot.com]

There are many many many more blogs covering everything. Even showed papers that saturated fat is not the real culprit for heart disease but it is the excessive amount of refined carbs. It's really all about controlling blood sugar level. No difference than other low carbs diet. Just minor differences over food selections.

[link to heartscanblog.blogspot.com] - the guy who runs it is a cardiologist with tons of knowledge in nutrition which is very rare. Most are idiots when it comes to nutrition in depth. He advocates a diet something similar to Paleo Diet because that's what he saw made biggest improvement in his patients' health. He does everything right. He use right kind of cholesterol test called NMR which is much more accurate and can measure LDL small particles which most commonly used calculated cholesterol test can't do at all. The dirty secret is that the excessive amount of carbs can raise small LDL particle level very very very high. It's directly responsible for plaque build up in the arteries. Make sure your doctor use NMR, not calculated cholesterol test!

I've read everything for 20 years so it's really all about controlling blood sugar level if you want to have long quality life. Everything we hear from MSM is bullshit. It's totally opposite. The food pyramid should be upside down for sure. Ignore American Dietetic Association, American Diabetic Association, American Heart Association, etc at all costs. They suck and rips us off with high carbs, low fat bullshit diet which have been proved to be bad for you over and over and over.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1057667

Thanks :)

Look forward to reading those links later tonight.

It's good to see that people are beginning to see through the MSM, ADA, AHA bullshit!

OP, haven't read the whole thread so I apologize if someone has already mentioned this, but Vitamin D3 is amazing in helping the body breakdown fats and sugars. If you are over 40, your ability to make Vitamin D with sunshine drops drastically, hence we start to gain weight. And I take more than the "recommended" 400 IU a day - I started pumping it up to 2,000 IU a day and the weight started to just drop off with no effort. And yeah, we eat lamb shanks and steak and pork crackling and put butter on the fresh organic beans/carrots, etc, from the garden. Just heard on the news the other day that Cdn government is recommending that people with arthritis not eat the "nightshade" family of plants, including tomatoes, red and green peppers, potatoes, etc. I thought to myself "what BS is this?" I grow my own peppers and purple potatoes (the original potato from Peru) and of course tomatoes - so if they are telling us not to eat them, they must be very good for you! Actually it's pretty funny. They've lied to us for so long that now they are inadvertently telling the truth, just as long as we do the opposite of what is "recommended" - too funny!

- The "Livin La Vida Low Carb" guy is still obese after years and years of low carb livin?

- Most low carb experts are obese and/or overweight?

- When you check out the popular low carb forums online, it's full of people with health problems that didn't go away when they went low carb, including candida, high cholesterol, and many other illnesses?

- Most people end up gaining the weight back because they get sick and tired of fat, cream and meat?

I personally ended up in the hospital TWICE while on low carb diets because it messed up my kidneys and drained my electrolytes.

Meat is extremely acidic to the body and builds up in the colon over the years. Ask anyone who has gone vegetarian, they experience a bit of 'meat detox' - that is, their colons empty all the stored crap (literally) from over the years.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
It starts with Syndrome X, an imbalance in your Endocrine system which in turn screws with your Metabolism which in turn screws your Pancreas.

But overall, quickly scanned your post without opening your websites, you are right.

It's quite easy to reverse the process, also if you have Diabetes II and a little harder when you have Diabetes I, but definitely possible.

---

Yep .... that first line sums it up exactly.

I see you are from Holland. I am in Holland quite often on business and never cease to be amazed that Holland seems to have the lowest number of overweight people that I have seen anywhere in Europe.

But then you guys eat a lot of cheese and ride bikes everywhere :)

Any other pointers to why Holland seems to do so well relative to the rest of Europe?
 Quoting: Sc0rp10n 1062159

I can fill up pages with examples but i think i can sum it up in 1 word: Awareness.

Besides the obvious, eat healthy and exercise, the best tip of all is probably the most simple:
Kick your Metabolism in overdrive, eat more often (like 5 times a day) but smaller portions.

Example:
Small (early) breakfast (to start up your Metabolism)
Fruit
Small lunch
Fruit
Small dinner (and nothing after that)

If you do just that there is no real need to balance your food because your Metabolism can easily handle it. (Unless you already have complications)

Oh, and don't forget, if you are using honey, avoid the ones from big companies and especially honey from China - the big boys and the Chinese are cutting honey with HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. Get your honey from a health food store and check the source! Many have switched from sugar to honey and "they" know this, so be really careful to know the source of any honey you consume. We're lucky here in BC, there are many small outfits that produce amazing honeys from different flowers, and once you taste them, you'd never eat "Billy Bee" again!

First of all, you don't eat everything in sight. And second, it's hard to comment on the people who eat low carb without knowing what else they consume. And, have you ever studied the Inuit diet? Their diets consist of mainly fats and meats, yet they do not suffer from modern disease. Same goes for other traditional diets around the world.

I'm familiar with low carb livin guy. He doesn't really do it right for the most part. He means well but he's just having hard time trying to do things right. Not much of willpower, i guess. It's all mental for the most part. You likely did not do it right. Try Paleo Diet. it's really not that much meat. I recommend you consume high amount of vegetables as your source of carbs. I have big salad with olive oil dressing. Little bit of rice with butter is fine. Even small sweet potatoes with butter is great stuff. You just don't need to have huge steak or anything. Just mainly avoid REFINED carbs stuff like bread, pasta, pizza, fruit drinks, sports drink, etc.

Vegetarians are morons to tell you the truth. It's like a religious rather than science based stuff. We've prove them wrong many times but they just refused to listen. If our ancestors tried that 20,000 years ago, we wouldn't be here. Doesn't really work in real life. You're looking at it wrong.... Sorry to burst your fantasy world...

More like 5,000 IU to maintain optimal vitamin D level from what I've read everywhere. I give my 5 years old kid 2,000 IU during school year and it has done wonders. Barely got sick while neighbor kids got all kinds of crap and even ended up in ER for severe respiratory infection. I told them about vitamin D but they looked disinterested. Oh well. They just have no idea how powerful vitamin D is unfortunately.

You can. Actually sourdough may be best kind. I'm not quite sure. Anyway don't eat so much of it assuming your blood sugar level doesn't go out of control after eating it. If you're overweight to begin with, you probably have elevated blood sugar level that you need to bring down so cutting out bread for a while may be necessary. People with diabetes are doomed to live without it for good. Pancreas are ruined however with Paleo diet, they can live relatively long lives without much problems. They don't even need drugs. Just have to watch carbs and exercise regularly.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Man I'm switching back to my 18 year old diet I had throughout high school and before college when I was skinny. Once college came around my diet changed and to the steryotypical college diet and ran less while putting on 20lbs. I used to eat a bowl of cereal with 2% milk fand 2 slices of toast with butter for breakfast and a peanut butter sandwchich (no jelly-I don't like jelly) for lunch and my parents cooked me meat and vegetables for dinner (though I was picky eater with meat and vegetables so I had a small portion and never finished my plate. At my physicals my doctor always said I was in good health and not malnourished.
