Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I have family members that are Paleo and family members that are vegetarians/vegans---They are all from California--

It seems Californians get real "religious" with their diets.
They cannot stop telling you all about their diets.

I've noticed both groups have a higher sense about them compared to others that don't share their food beliefs, looking down on those that do not eat as they do. Almost like religion is moving by the way of food diets. The Paleo's whole lives revolve around their diet.

I don't think the vegans would last long against the paleo's.

Scorpion, can you advise one or more books that cover the knowledge you present? I really would like to dig into it but am not able to concentrate good enough on a screen, I need paper. Thanks!

Try Paleo Diet. Seems easy for me. Little food preparation...

that's something completely different than Scorpion tells... I'd like to hear a book recommendation from OP himself..

Good thread here, thanks Sorp! I would like to do some more reading on this, but it seems like something I can work with.

I love ice cream, can I have a scoop or two a week and not wreck my eating habits too much? How about a "cheat day" or meal once in a while?

So when it's all about animal fat and avoiding vegetable fat, this is not an eating style for vegetarians...? Or is it just about the different kinds of fats?

NO PUFA's!

or Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Saturated fats @ 60-80%
with protein at approx. 1gram per kilo, and carbs? Well lets just say that 'carbs' are the New Junk Food!

fruits are known to PREVENT consumption through their by products, and any WE'VE 'adjusted,' ie., the difference between a granny smith(we made,) compared to an 'original' apple, ie, 'Crabapple,' and the difference is ASTRONOMICAL.

so, the fruits lose mostly, and eggwhites too, even cooking dosen't completely diminish the 'weird' parts, of which the Yolks have NONE. Egg yolks are the staple. I'm looking into the differences, sans size, of the duck, goose, and any other forms of yolks. If truly a Paleo, which this surpasses, I guess I cannot eliminate Ostrich(sp,) but that's like 2doz., well there was this guy who ate 24+ eggs for over 13 years, and he was 80yrs. when relating this story.

agri~B U S I N E S S, has N O 'business' in your family.

I was just gettin' into Alkaline adjustments, when I remembered I DID have SOME senses left, and I left it behind.

A major theory about all this is basically the 'SUGAR PARASITE' that lives inside of you 'helping' YOU feed IT sugar, and it will 'adjust' your thinking to do so.

when there is little sugar it will
'ALLOW' SOME fats to be burned(you,) but ONLY until you feed it again, sugar of course, and fructose is one of the most easily absorbed sugars there is.

so look it up.

so far I've gained 6lbs., I'll just betcha it was the ice cream, gotta make my own, think I'll try out Coconut Sugar, NOT PALM SUGAR, too often it has cane sugar in it.

also wondering why there's a COUPLE mcbucks on every corner?

SUGAR CRAVINGS, ie., INSULIN RESPONSE/RESISTANCE, ie., hormonal puckups!!!

really LOOK into it.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Great info, Sc0rp10n. Thanks.

Iím still reading the links to get more information but what I read so far on this thread has helped me immensely to open up my mind. I really want to give it a try to see if I can lose 9kg (Iím 67kg and want to get back to 58kg, height 1,69m btw) but I do have two big problems to implement this diet.

The first one is about fruitÖ I donít think I can stop eat it, especially in summer when we have such a variety of fruit. I can eat less or stop eating for, say, two weeks (done that), but more than that I donít think I can. Do you know of anyone who was successfully in losing weight with this diet with a bigger percent on the carbs? With 20g carbs I canít even introduce a piece of fruit (lemons donít count for me and berries are so rare here they get too expensive). Iím already used to eat plenty of vegetables.

The second one is not exactly a question, itís more a request. Itís about the amount of fat. I love fat (mayo, cream, butter, olive oil,Ö) but since I started with diets a few years ago I almost stopped eating it. Yes, I know, kind of stupid. But how does one go from not eating it to eat loads! Iím scared! LOL! How did you and others do it?

I lost 15kg (in 13 months) two years ago doing a diet similar to the Zone (complex carbs, no sugar, lots of vegs, protein, seeds, nuts, yogurt, not too many fruits, few grains, few beans). I put on 5kg this year with white flour and sugarÖ then I went back to my somewhat healthy diet but still itís not easy for me to lose. Maybe Iím lacking the fat so Iím inclined to try it.

Anyoneís tips are very welcomed.

Meat will pretty much give you all the vitamins and minerals that you need when combined with dairy and a few types of nuts, etc (though even those are optional).

Research your material on a guy called Vilhjamul Stefansson.

You can make a start here :

This piece has some of his musings on diet based on his experiences of living with Eskimo's.

It is by no means an isolated example. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a curse of civilisation, much as they would have you believe the opposite!

I have no science behind this other than what I know works by triple cycle experimentation.

No COOKED starches.
No processed sugars or sugar substitute anything
No processed flours, grains, seeds, or nuts.
80-100 grams of clean animal protein (egg whites are best for breakfast) per day.
Low sugar LIVE fruits, high fiber LIVE veggies.

Arthritis... gone within 3 days.
Workouts at least 10% more available capacity.
Weight stays kinda low, nothing I can grab (that's the TRUE test. Don't use a scale. Use a mirror and handholds.)

what great information in this thread and great links. On the eskimo diet I was fascinated that it said on the all meat diet, there were no more headaches, no more gas. I remember seeing a t.v. show years ago about some tribes people eating a really high fat diet and being very healthy and the researchers couldnt account for it or understand it, decided it was some kind of genetic glitch to keep them alive.

I eat A LOT of saturated animal animal fats, but coconut oil is the best for keeping the thyroid working properly. I eat 2 meals a day, do not snack in between when very active, but I do use coffee.

Years ago, when I ate a lot of carbs and very little sat fat I was very hypoglycmic, snack all day, hungry a lot. I was more than slightly underweight. Underweight, pound for pound, is a more dangerous situation than overweight

I am now only SLIGHTLY underweight and need to gain 6-9 lbs. We'll see what happens in the winter. The situation may resolve itself, but I may add oatmealm, as that has added lbs in the recent past.

still wondering if I can get all the right fats together without restarting eating meat. 've been a vegetarian for ages now... but I'm getting a new outlook on food, tnx to this thread: got a book on the physiology of food, and on Atkins and South Beach (those purely to look into their arguments of more fat, less fruit/grains, less carbo) and am thinking about buying the (quite expensive) books of Krasniewsky

How to keep to 65 grams protein, and 20 grams CARBS??? THATS the hard one for me.
Atkins allows 20 grams carbs on the induction only.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I decided not be so strict on the carbs, at least for the time being, and I'm following Dr K. formula 1 : 2.5 - 3.5 : 0.5 which gives me 58g:116g - 159g:29 - 49g
Still, 58g of protein is much less than I was expecting but 29g (I'm trying not go up this limit) is a bit more than 20g.

My first day. I ate a lot of protein (fried eggs, prosciutto, avocado) at breakfast and after lunch when I did the math I realized I had no protein left. So my dinner was a big green salad with cucumber with a very nice dressing with 1 oz of extra olive oil, 50g of mayo, a pinch of organic mustard and fresh coriander. That's more or less 50g of fat. Not that difficult to eat fat after all. For my first day I got 58,5:143:27. Not bad for a newbie.

I also made the sponge-cake bread ( [link to homodiet.netfirms.com] down the page) for breakfast for the week. It was really easy to make and it looks great. I'll tell you how it tastes tomorrow.

Triple cycle means two weeks on a typical diet, two weeks on no sugars diet, three cycles.

Not cooked or processed means live fruit.

A handhold of fat means you can grab some and your conscience tells you, "man, I've got to loose this."

I agree with OP.

I bought the following book which is very good and informative.

[link to www.amazon.com]

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body is unable to use its own insulin properly to convert sugar into energy. Medical journalist Williamson believes that 75 percent of the world's population suffers from some degree of insulin resistance, which is considerably higher than other estimates. She details her rationale for advocating a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet through a historical look at food habits, employing alarmist language and dubious research. She lists hidden triggers of insulin resistance without mentioning obesity, one of the major identified causes. Most of the volume indicts high-carbohydrate diets for common American diseases such as obesity, diabetes, gallstones, yeast infections, irritable bowel disease, and more, in direct conflict with current American Dietetic Association guidelines. Low-carb recipes, a small food diary, Internet sites, and a bibliography are included. Gerald M. Reaven's Syndrome X: Overcoming the Silent Killer That Can Give You a Heart Attack (LJ 2/1/00) is far superior. Not recommended. Janet M. Schneider, James A. Haley Veterans' Hosp., Tampa, FL

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
this diet does not really work for all blood types. It's great for blood type O, but not so good for blood type B or AB. Something to consider.

A balanced diet higher in carbs is still fine for maintaining weight. You're not gonna die from it, but yeah, the average diet is too carb heavy.
