when we went to france for a couple of weeks, we ate high fat foods, all kinds...
and we walked a lot.
I thought I gained at least 5 pounds there. But when I came back home and weighed myself, I acutally lost 5 pounds

Learn to eat food. You really can learn to appreciate flavours, really.

I have been trying, it's hard, a lot of textures gross me out, like mushrooms and avocados.
 Quoting: Yee Haw

but you have to push through that about 5 times, than it gets better; you get used to the textures and tastes, and even will start appreciating them even líking on the long run!

I had it with the raw zucchini rolls with surimi and sesame oil today. Almost threw up on the first two, I liked the last two of all six :)

Just bought a bunch of groceries; lots of veggies, cheeses and fish. Can't decide on what I think about saturated fats in cheeses: light versions the first weeks or not? I'm doing half-half, checking out what's the ratio among them. As I said, I do not think much saturated is good, but they are needed too. Am quite keen on monounsaturted vs polyunsaturated; as little as possible of the last.

Fish with steamed broccoli and some raw veggie hogwash tonight :) First gonna run (with tired head), through a storm :)

Okay, so last night, ribeye with a side salad of lettuce and spinach topped with some cheese and olive oil.

This morning---I lost 2 ounces.

Believe it or not I'm quite happy with that, because after eating 2 eggs with butter, ham and ribeye, I expected to GAIN a pound!
I was seriously amazed that I had not.

This morning, was scrambled eggs and I just ate lunch--tuna with mayo, boiled egg and homegrown cucumber pickles.

I'll snack later on some type of vegie, and haven't figured out dinner yet.

It would be neat if some of you could put meal suggestions down, I'm not very imaginative.
Today will be the most I've eaten in a long time, fingers crossed!

Well, not so great, I didn't lose anything yesterday, so two days = 2ounces. I may try it one more day today --don't know if it will help, a light day (2meals + 2 snacks)means only 2 ounces, a decent day of food (3 meals + 2 snacks) means no loss-- so I don't know what to do, everything else has failed. Maybe Paleo, I don't know, I have relatives on it and they claim their weight is just falling off. They are allowed to eat fruit, but not dairy. I'm pretty depressed. It would really stink to give up dairy.

I had high hopes for this one.

I don't know about weight (I don't do that, I look at my belly, feel how pants fit) but I do know I feel the same way as when I'm fasting... blurry, headachy, grumpy... just feel my body's trying to get what's going on... And that on a 2nd day, good stuff. While I'm eating a lot.

But mention I'm not doing the high fat/Optimal Diet thingy, more of an own version of South Beach (bit more saturated fats)

Don’t despair. You need to give your body some time to adjust and a couple of days is not enough to see if this works for you or not, on any plan.
You just started, remember? On the previous pages you were only eating carrots and lettuce leaves! Don’t count ounces, unless it’s food. Give yourself a break and don’t be afraid of eating just because you are afraid of putting on pounds. That’s like fearing to walk because you are afraid to fall. Your body needs to adjust. And don’t you think you’re going to lose everyday. Some days you go up others days you go down. Once a week you gauge what you lost since last week, say every Sunday or Monday. Also, if you like to weigh everyday, remember that your weight varies during the day so you should only weigh once a day and always at the same time, for instance after bath and before breakfast.
And lastly, please, don’t obsess yourself with your weight. If you want to keep with this meal plan give at least a couple of weeks, eating the right foods and the right macronutrient’s ratio before making a decision about staying or not with it. And remember to enjoy your food. You have to eat everyday so it’s better if you eat foods you like.

Good luck.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Question. I have been on the Atkins diet a few times for about 2 weeks each. Reason is because after about the 2 weeks I felt like I was having a heart attack. Even went to the emergency room the first time, turned out to be indigestion. Tried the diet again a few years later, same thing happened.

Read something somewhere and figured out that the culprit could be my gall stones. If I don't eat carbs, I get the problem with the heart attack/chest thing going on.

My gall stones have been there for many years and have never bothered me, so I don't bother them.

Does this make sense to anyone? Or did I miss the mark completely on this? If you can agree that this is the cause of the problem, any ideas on how to fix it so I can do the high fat diet without doing surgery?

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
with Atkins the problem for you might have been the high dose of saturated fats...although it's highly recommended in OP's diet, research results differ in the good of it.. And remember different persons might react differently on a diet.

If you have gall stones, get rid of 'em.
If it's indigestion, look into that, try to resolve it or maybe it's a side-effect of the diet? I believe Atkins speaks about it in his book...

I'm not qualified to give medical advice, but I read something about gallstones re Optimal diet somewhere, so maybe it's a good idea to do a google search containing those words to see what you can find. Sorry if it's too obvious, but this is the only help I can give you.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Trying to figure out what to eat for dinner.

I'm going with sausage cooked with vegetables.

I'm going over the acceptable foods lists and all I'm getting out of it, with the exceptions of creams and some nuts, is MEAT and VEGETABLES

Is that really the basis of the diet?

So I cannot eat;
fruit, rice, potatoes, mac & cheese, pasta, corn, beans....?

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Some greeek recipes:

Kotopoulo Stifatho (Stifado): Chicken and Onion Stew

•2 tablespoons of olive oil
•2 pounds of whole boiler or pearl onions, peeled
•2-3 tablespoons of olive oil
•1 chicken (around 4 pounds), cut into serving-sized pieces
•3-4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
•2 pounds of ripe tomatoes, peeled and finely chopped or pulped in food processor (including juice)
•1 stick of cinnamon
•2 whole cloves
•2 bay leaves
•1/2 cup of dry white wine or dry vermouth
•1 teaspoon of sea salt
•1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper or a few peppercorns

In a skillet, sauté whole peeled onions in 2 tablespoons of oil, stirring constantly until lightly browned. Transfer onions to a colander to drain and discard oil.

In a stew pot, heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat, add chicken pieces and turn frequently to brown on all sides. Add garlic slices and sauté for a minute or so more to brown (total about 10 minutes). Stir in sautéed boiler onions, chopped or pulped tomatoes (with their juice), wine, salt, pepper, and a bouquet garni with the cinnamon stick, cloves, and bay leaves.

Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours without stirring, until the only liquid remaining is the sauce. Discard bouquet garni.
-------------------

Stewed Chicken with Wine and Peppers

•4 1/2 pounds of chicken, serving size pieces
•1 large onion, chopped
•1/4 cup of olive oil
•1 teaspoon of sea salt
•1/4 cup of red wine
•1 3/4 cups of water
•2 sweet red peppers, seeded and chopped (bell, corno di toro, etc.)
•2 green bell peppers, seeded and chopped
•juice of 2 lemons
•2 tablespoons of flour

Heat oil in a stew pot over high heat. When hot, add chopped onion and chicken. Stir to coat with oil and cover. When the liquid comes to a full boil, cook for 8-9 minutes or until liquid from the chicken cooks off, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Stir in the wine, lower heat to medium-low, cover, and cook for 5 minutes. Add water and peppers, stir to mix well, cover, and cook for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

In a small bowl, combine lemon juice and flour with a fork until flour is dissolved.

Increase heat under the chicken to medium, and when it reaches a full boil, pour off 1 1/2 cups of the liquid into the lemon-flour mixture. Use a fork to blend well and pour back into the pot, stirring to blend thoroughly. Allow to boil for 3 minutes, turn off heat, and let sit, covered, on the cooling stovetop for 20 minutes before serving.
------------------

Lamb Stew with Green Beans

•4 pounds of leg of lamb, bone in (or 3 1/3 pounds of boneless leg or shoulder) cut in serving sized pieces
•1 onion, finely chopped
•7/8 cup of olive oil
•1 1/2 cups of water
•2 teaspoons of sea salt
•2 1/4 pounds of fresh or frozen string beans, ends trimmed
•3 medium-large tomatoes, pulped in blender
•4 tablespoons of tomato sauce
•2 1/4 pounds of potatoes, peeled, cut in large chunks
•1/2 rounded tablespoon of fresh chopped mint
•1 rounded tablespoon of fresh chopped dill
•1 rounded tablespoon of fresh chopped parsley
•a pinch of ground cinnamon

In a casserole or stew pot, sauté the onion and meat in olive oil over medium heat until well browned. Add water, tomatoes, tomato sauce, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes, until meat is tender.

Add beans, potatoes, mint, dill, parsley, cinnamon, and remaining salt. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Add more water during cooking if necessary.

who cut the cheese? damn! Farting ki

Actually it's sugars, starches and fibre that cause gas - fats and proteins cause very little :)

[link to digestive.niddk.nih.gov]

The sugars that cause gas are raffinose, lactose, fructose, and sorbitol.

Raffinose. Beans contain large amounts of this complex sugar. Smaller amounts are found in cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, other vegetables, and whole grains.

Have you ever smelt the brussels sprout fart? It's not pretty!! lol

Another good reason to avoid people who regularly have their FIVE A DAY lol
 Quoting: Sc0rp10n 1062159

Right you are. And lactose if found in MILK, which contains FAT. Also BUTTER, another FAT. Both of them are used by those endorsing a HIGH FAT diet, including Atkinsers.

I avoid those FATS because I'm allergic to dairy. I'm also allergic to olives so can't do olive oil, and since I'm allergic to most nuts I can't do most nut oils. Allergic to flax, so flax oil is out. So I do fish oil but NOT in high quantity.

The secret for types Os/hunter-gatherers is in CUTTINB CARBS, not going high fat as the OP says.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Nourishing and sustaining recipes:

Beef stew with peas

1 kilo of stewing beef, cubed.
1 tsp. thyme
1 cup olive oil
1 large bay leaf
1 large chopped onion
2 cups of crushed tomatoes
2 garlic cloves,crushed
2or3 carrots, peeled and cut
salt & pepper to taste
1/2 kilo of peas (fresh or frozen)
1 tsp. oregano

Salt and pepper the beef chunks. In a large pot, heat the olive oil and add the beef, browning it on all sides. Add the onions and garlic and continue to fry until the onions seem tender. Add the tomatoes and spices, carrots, peas and stir well. Reduce the heat and simmer the beef, covered until tender - about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. You may need to add water as it evaporates.
----------------------------

Psarosoupa (Fish Soup)

1 1/2 kilo of fresh sea food
~ 1 cup of finely chopped onions
~ 1/2 a cup of ripped diced tomatoes
~ 1/2 a cup of rice
~ 1 cup of shopped carrots
~ 1 cup of diced potatoes
~ 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice
~ Salt and pepper to taste

~ Clean and wash fish well.
~ Place the fish (and the rest of the sea food of your choice) in a pan with about 3 liters of water and cook well.
~ When the fish is cooked, strain the broth into another pan.
~ Add all the vegetables, (onions, carrots, potatoes) and let them cook.
~ In the meantime debone the fish and the rest of the sea food and put back in the pan with the rise.
~ When the rice is cooked, add the tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.
~ 5-10 minutes later remove the soup from the heat.
~ Add the lemon juice, stir and you are ready to serve.

I've lost another pound in 5 days.

I'm impressed!

I feel like I'm eating like a PIG.

Never feel hungry.

I have alertness and energy too.

Gonna keep on it.
Revelation 1:7 "Behold, He comes with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen."

Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look on Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
but aren't fats heavy to digest and give you a slow, heavy, sluggish feeling?

and correct me if i'm wrong but fats, proteins and carbs are all converted to glucose to be used for energy. fats will use up a lot of energy in order to be converted to energy as opposed to fruits.

also, oils and fats aren't naturally occuring in almost pure form as they are sold so eating those should be avoided for the sake of natural nuts and seeds.

I read about the extreme method of ketogenic transformation by only consuming olive oil for a few days but it didn't seem to be healthy.

As a matter of fact since I started this a week ago I feel more energetic and alert, light too in terms of weight, my eyes are not so dry as they used to that I stopped using eye drops and my skin is smooth and shiny.
I've been reading tons of articles about low carb/ high fat diets that supposedly dispel many myths, so this is a ongoing experiment, but so far so good.

BTW, fat in traditional Mediterranean diet is based on olive oil, for centuries. It is healthy.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I gained 6 ounces.

Feeling really bad again. I tried so hard yesterday and willed it to work because I wanted it to work so bad, I'm running out of dieting options, I tried cutting back on the amount I eat, since I had no loss the day before.
I ate 3 very light meals, of just meat and equal parts of vegetables with a little cheese, 2 snacks of just a few almonds and macadamians.

Today is going to be extremely hard.

damnit, Yee Haw, STOP weighing everyday! That's totally pointless, and you can tell it's bringing you down. Weigh once a week, only then you can say something about the results.

And you shouldn't eat little, you should eat a lot! A lot of fat stuff, a lot of eggs, veggies and meat/fish! Eat, damnit!

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I felt better after I ate breakfast, no longer want to throw myself off a bridge.

I'm going to finish off the entire week on this diet.
If anything show how much I gained on it.

I started out breakfast with some green tea, I have 8 ounces down now and working on my last small glass to finish off with 12 ounces.
I was SUPER hungry this morning and depressed, so said fuck it and made 2 scrambled eggs in butter and then fried a piece of ham in olive oil then topped with cheese.
After I ate that I ate a scoop of cream. Yep made me feel much better.
I'm going to try one of those chicken stew recipes for dinner.

I'm totally paranoid about not weighing everyday. I can add entire pound in one day and not feel it. It wouldn't be hard for me to gain 5 pounds in a week. Gaining is SO easy to do, but for me IMPOSSIBLE to take off. So I try to keep it in check.
