Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I'm starting to think to return to a vegetarian diet again, because of spiritual reasons. Probably won't (yet) skip on fish, and might just eat some chicken sometimes...

Are there any guidelines/ideas to do a low carb diet without meat and not falling into the trap of potatoes, grains, meat, dairy, fruit... I'm mainly thinking of eggs, cheese, nuts, vegetables... Main problem in my mind is diner; can imagine eating some kind of salad with fatty cheese, fish, oil/mayonaise on top or veggies with sauce/oil...

Struggling to form an idea in my head how to make a diverse diet that's still low carb/high fat ánd gives me enough calories to stay healthy and avoid hibernation mode... Ideas?

Don't know if thie www.earthclinic.com has been added in this thread, too many pages to check, but it is excellent.

The trick is to juice raw fruits/vegs, if you are able to - you will lose much weight on that alone.

Cut out the sugar and breads - there is an Ezekiel bread in Health Store that is made by biblical receipe, expensive but wonderful to eat.

ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar - Braggs, Organic) takes hunger away - amazed how much this works, couple of tablespoons in the morning with it, non fluro water.

The Earthclinic site is truly a gem of a place for all kind of information re diet and what TPTB's propaganda is doing to people.

Lots of salads in summer and winter soups are low in cost and high in benefits.

All the best

One can easily do this on a raw foods diet of mainly greens, nuts and seeds. Add some green sprouts to that.

Actually though.. I tried the extreme low carb way, which is under 20g every 4 hrs or so. This will keep you in ketosis.

Everytime I do it though I get low back pain!

So I include some berries or sprouted legumes in the salad sometimes.

I figure that maybe it's depleting too much liver stores and instead gets them from the kidneys? Who knows.. but yea the liver stores fructose.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I'd lost 4.5 kilos (9.9 pounds) by going low calorie and walking on treadmill for 60 mins every day for two weeks.

Now my weight has gone back up again. I used to always lose weight by goihng low carb, but I've developed an intolerance to eggs now and I relied on them so heavily on low carb.

I want to go back to low carb to keep losing weight, but what do I have for breakfast if I can't eat eggs???

An eggless breakfast I enjoy is fixing myself a bowl of sausage gravy. I use a nice medium hot breakfast sausage w sage and fry it up till crumbly. I only drain some of the fat if it is really fatty. Then I add heavy cream generously and simmer until the cream reduces into a nice thick sausage gravy. This is yummy and satisfying in a bowl and since you are leaving off the biscuits and the flour thickeners you will find the gravy remarkably light and sitting easy on the stomach. Only problem is that you need to eat it all in one sitting because gravy separates on reheating.

If scorpion still comes around I would appreciate a comment on a concern I am having. I'm approaching two years eating like this and I am not wanting to loose any more weight but cant seem to stabilize. I had half a coke last night and woke up stiff tired and moody. Every time I cheat a little I can feel my body react negatively to grains or sugar. This is very real and not in my head. I know I need to be eating more fat and protein but working outside in the heat I just have lost my appetite and cannot finish a normal size portion.

I want to eat this way for life because of the energy and youthfulness it gives me, but with no food cravings anymore and my low appetite I'm turning into a bag of bones. I know you have done this diet for many years, did you or your wife hit a point where you lost interest in food or had to adapt some things to stop loosing?

What's the best alcohol to drink while on this diet?
Liquor? If so, what kind.

Any liquor consumption will stall you for a day or two. Your body will be burning alcohol, not fat, as long as there is alcohol in your system.

I stick with vodka on the rocks for the fewest carbs and no sugar when I do drink. Occasionally I'll get a rum/diet coke. One drink goes a long way when in ketosis, BTW.

I am not Scorpion, but I figured I would respond. I have been on the diet since mid-december 2010. My weight has stabilized, after initially losing about 15lbs. I gained back about 4 and have been steady now for quite a while.

I think the most important thing is eating a large and very fatty breakfast. From the time I eat breakfast in the morning, till I really feel like eating lunch, is 7-8 hours.

After a fatty breakfast, lunch should be a moderate meal, but does not need to be so heavy on the fat. A hamburger with the bun is ok. Or tacos in flour or corn tortillas is ok. Even a 1/2 order of fries is ok. Dinner should be light and almost snacky. This is the meal when I eat celery with cream cheese, nuts, cold cuts or cold cut meats, slices of cheese, olives, sliced tomatoes with mayo, etc.

I think you need to keep fairly close to the ratios. In other words, make sure you are eating enough calories to support your target weight, as calculated from the Optimal site.I sometimes go for several days where I never really feel very hungry, but I go ahead and eat anyhow, because I need the energy for my highly physical work.

Some days, when I don't feel that hungry at lunch time, I drink a pint of half and half and eat a small bag of pork rinds. Gives my about 900 calories for about $5 and doesn't make me feel all overloaded and bloated.

We are eating for sustenance, not for entertainment.

Hi,

The best alcohols are whisky, vodka, gin, rum, etc. Brandy is next but most brandies contain some carbs, but still pretty low.

I find that all alcohol stalls weight loss :( While I was trying to lose weight I was pretty much tee-total.

There seems to be a very interesting post-alcohol weight gain that can kick in one day after you have been drinking. I find that in most cases the morning after you have been drinking there is a weight loss. This lulls you into a sense of security since alcohol produces hunger for quite a period after drinking, so you tend to over eat the day after drinking. This can produce a HUGE weight gain that kicks in the following morning after the weight drop. The weight drop could be 1-2 pounds, but the subsequent weight gain can be a pretty scary 4-6 pounds. This can take about a week to come off again.

Now, I am usually careful the day after drinking and stick to about 1500 calories of mainly fatty food. This seems to prevent the big rise that seems to follow the alcohol binge.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the earlier post about the sausage gravy :)

I'm thinking I'm going to go Atkins again. My only issue was last time I went Atkins and was walking an hour on the treadmill every day, I felt so washed out and weak I just couldn't do it.

I want to go low carb but still do an hour on the treadmill every day. I've been told if I want to exercise, I need some carbs. Can anyone clear that up for me?

How can I go low carb, stick to the treadmill and not have that completely washed out/all I can do is lie on the couch feeling? :)

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
OK, very interesting holiday update and some musings on the western way of consuming carbs.

We have just been to Thailand for 19 days. I was amazed at what people eat over there and yet almost everyone is stick thin and even 'middle-age spread' seems to be rare. However, these are some of the observations I came away with:

1) The consumption of coconut is huge. This includes coconut milk, cream and oil. It is in the curries, the soups, the sweets, everything.

2) There is an almost total absence of wheat flour (or indeed corn). It was amazing to go to restaurants and NEVER be offered bread (except once when we went to a Spanish tapas place).

3) They consume a lot of rice - even the noodles are rice noodles, without any apparent ill effect.

4) They primarily use coconut palm sugar for sweetening. This is incredibly low GI at about 35.

5) They eat a lot of fat and protein - with fish, seafood, chicken, pork, beef, etc all eaten liberally.

6) They eat a lot of bread fruits/squashes which are low carb.

I would say that carbs probably account for more than 50-60% of calories consumed.

The 2 differentiating factors are the lack of wheat and corn and the liberal use of coconut.

I will address the coconut first. Coconut oil is primarily saturated so their saturated fat consumption is VERY high, especially when combined with high fatty meat consumption. The saturated fats in coconut are a bit different though. These are what are called Medium-Chain Fatty Acids as opposed to other saturated fats being Long-Chain Fatty Acids.

The fascinating property of MCFA fats is that they seem to induce a ketogenic state even in the presence of substantial amounts of carbs i.e. up to 100gm. They have been used in epileptic ketogenic diets to induce ketosis while livening up the diet of epileptic children a bit.

Now what is important about a ketogenic state? You can ONLY burn fats when you are ketogenic. In the presence of insulin and absence of ketones fat burning is suspended. The idea is that you are burning glucose for energy and the function of insulin is to shuffle that glucose to your cells. When the glucose is exhausted then you switch to fat as insulin levels drop. However, with the western way of eating and snacking on carbs this hardly ever happens except at night since people are eating carbs non-stop thus ensuring they never burn fat for energy and store it all.

OK - the second factor - wheat, corn and other cereals. I am beginning to believe that it is these cereals that are destroying our glucose metabolism and causing all the metabolic disorders such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, many cancers, kidney disease, fatty liver disease, Alzheimers, etc.

I am beginning to think that rice is different and doesn't have the same effect. This would explain why South East Asian countries have not had the obesity and metabolic syndrome issues but are now starting to. It interestingly differentiates India too where diabetes is soaring as they have increased their use of wheat and corn flours and reduced their ghee and coconut oil consumption in favour of crap vegetable oils.

The kicker though is that once the glucose metabolism is broken then consuming rice while still cause systemic damage since the ability to process carbs is ruined! At that point all carbs are a problem.

Right! Personal experience time:

I drank like a fish, ate huge quantities of the local soups and curries and even had rice and rice noodles. I even had some corn tortillas at a very nice Mexican restaurant in Hua Hin (give it a plug - it's called Margaritas - amazing!!!). So .... in 16 nights I had gained all of 4 pounds (weighing myself on our last morning in Pattaya), more than I would have expected to gain from the alcohol alone. And my carb consumption was 2-3 times (sometimes more) more than normal Furthermore, my drinking was mainly Rum and Diet Coke and Margarita's rather then Whisky!

By contrast last year in Portugal in 16 nights I gained about 9 pounds and ate my normal less than 20gm of carbs a day way. That was the alcohol difference.

So in some strange way I managed to gain less despite drinking more and eating more carbs.

Now, to make things even stranger. We had a 2 night stopover in Delhi and despite the fact I drank less and didn't eat any carbs I had gained another 5 pounds! But I had more vegetables and curries cooked in vegetable oil. Hmmm - go figure that one!

Anyway .... back home ... half the weight is gone already and I am now looking at ways to experiment with coconut in our diet, now I can use my blood sugar monitor again. It was nice being able to at least have some rice, even if in very small quantities, without any apparent ill effect.

Hi - the important thing with exercise and low-carb is plenty of fat. Atkins can be very protein heavy and protein is crap for energy - since it has to be converted to glucose first by the liver and only excess protein will be converted. Plus it is so filling that your body will start to protest by turning your hunger right off.

If you are ketogenic and have loads of fat in the system then the energy kick is actually more instant than with carbs and the endurance is much longer. I was doing 10,000 metres on the rowing machine (till I managed to bugger my back) in sub-40 minute times and I am 47 now.

It's so funny, people who used to know me when I was large see me smoke and they do a disconnect. They always ask me how I square that with the new 'healthy me'! They never seem to connect the reason that I look 'healthy' is because I supposedly eat so 'unhealthy' lol

Always tell 'em - I am totally consistent. I did the opposite with the diet and it worked. So, I guess if they don't want me to smoke then there is a good reason why I should carry right on lol

There is every indication that nicotine is good for us. In fact, Niacin (vitamin B3) is actually really called nicotinic acid. The name was changed because of the war on tobacco. Look it up.

Researchers Light Up for Nicotine, the Wonder Drug
[link to www.wired.com]

A Smoke and a Cup of Joe Linked to Warding Off Parkinson's
[link to www.pdf.org]

The neurological benefits of nicotine are well established, especially in that it acts as a substitute for a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, a substance that runs down as we age and the absence of which is linked to Alzheimers.

It certainly isn't the first time that something we have been told is bad for us actually isn't!! There is a story on GLP today about coconut oil. Read it here:

Coconut Oil Halts Tooth Decay

Ties in quite interestingly with my post on the last page about my experiences with coconut in Thailand.

Thanks for that, Scorpion. Although when I went Atkins before I didn't worry about fat at all - I never do :) But as of tomorrow I'm starting a low carb/high protein diet again. This time I'm going to really up the fat stakes (put butter on my steak, etc) and see if that makes a difference.

I'm 45 now, nearly 46 and it's so bloody hard to lose weight as I get older. Also, you might know ... I've been doing 30 mins on the treadmill in the morning and then 30 mins in the evening when I finish work. Do you reckon that's as effective as a one hour in one go workout? Thanks in advance! :)

This diet is bullshit. I've been on it for 4 days and haven't lost a single pound and I've been doing exactly what was said to do.

I even threw in a pretty rigorous, 20 minute exercise routine WITH cardio, and nothing.

People trying to take the easy way out with this diet will certainly fail in the long run, not to mention this diet will completely destroy your mental well being leaving you feeling weak, confused and foggy.

It is a FACT and you know it!

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
So, decided to give this diet a try, along with running and walking daily.

I've been doing the low (lower) carb thing for nearly two months, but haven't been weighing myself, just seeing what would happen.

So far I haven't noticed huge changes or anything. I think I might have lost a tiny bit of weight.

Today was my first weigh in, which came to 247.2 pounds. (I'm 5 feet 11 inches tall.) My goal is to get to about 180. (Because, honestly f--k it, I'm forty and even if I had washboard abs that wouldn't get me supermodels. I just don't want to be fat forever.)

I did my first run/walk today, which was 5.2 miles of running (honestly a medium jog) and 2.85 miles of walking after that. (It was supposed to be 5.2 as well, but I started forming a blister on the ball of my right foot and want to be able to run/walk tomorrow.)

My current plan is to try and lose at least one pound per week. I'll weigh daily, since I know that can help me stay on track. (It varies from person to person I hear. I always do better with daily weighing and almost always gain weight if I don't do it.)

I have a history of eating disorders (overeating mainly, binging in particular) and have had exercise addiction.

Because of that I want to keep my overall exercise to about/below three hours a day.

*I haven't been running for a while however, in case anyone wonders how I gained all that weight. I have a very sedentary job right now and have been working hard hours at it. It shows on the the waist line.

Right now, since I'm really ramping up, I'm working to keep my carbs to under 20 effective per day.

Now, here's my question for you...

How do I increase fat in my diet without loading up on protein? I can't just eat nothing but spoonfuls of coconut oil. (I mean I can't, not won't. I tried it for a day. I was so sick... TOTAL keto burn that day though!)

Ideas?

This diet is bullshit. I've been on it for 4 days and haven't lost a single pound and I've been doing exactly what was said to do.

I even threw in a pretty rigorous, 20 minute exercise routine WITH cardio, and nothing.

As much as 4 days eh lol

That's really giving your body time to adjust after a lifetime of carbs!!

Complete horseshit dude. you can eat whatever you want if you just get your lazy ass off the couch and WALK.

People trying to take the easy way out with this diet will certainly fail in the long run, not to mention this diet will completely destroy your mental well being leaving you feeling weak, confused and foggy.

It is a FACT and you know it!

lol - you obviously don't understand metabolism, how it changes with age, etc, etc. You don't understand how wheat in particular screws up your whole endocrine system meaning that eventually you can eat next to nothing and still gain weight.

You should read the thread and see the evidence from the Government's own statistics. At the turn of the century average calorie consumption was 3750 calories a day. Today it is just over 2,200. That's a difference of 1,550 calories a day. Now, walking burns about 70 calories an hour more than sitting on your errm arse! If you walked for 24 hours a day that's just 1,680 calories. Hell, if you went for a TWO HOUR flat out run you will burn 1,000-1,200 calories.

During a marathon an average size runner will burn about 2,500 calories. That is all. So for the difference between what we used to eat and what we now eat you would have to run the equivalent of a marathon every other day.

The calorie theory is absolute bunk! It ignores the degrading effect that long-term consumption of carbs, particularly wheat and corn, have on the ability to process glucose. If your muscles don't process it, it gets stored as fat. So you have some people eating more, but also starving at the same time. Yet they gain weight. Fat can only be burnt for energy in the absence of carbs or during fasting. That includes fats consumed as well as stored fat.

So, it's not sustainable eh? 4 1/2 years of weighing what I did at 21 at 48 .... after a lifetime of struggling with weight! Now it's no struggle. I drink spirits (lots of them), I eat about 3,500 calories a day, haven't exercised in months and I am thinner than 80% of 20 year olds. Can't be bad!
