Taking into account that I have $1200 to work with, my questions deal with the processor and RAM. Quoting: *~*Faithful*~*I'll be attending online college, with multi-tasking being a BIG part of it's use. I'll be having online presentations of classroom lectures to watch, as well as taking notes. I'll be using Word, Power Point, and Excel quite a bit. During the course of my degree, I'm sure I'll also have to make a video when I take speech and perhaps other classes? My first question is, what processor do I need/which one is the best suited for my needs? ~Intel Core i-3 or i-5 ~Triple Core ~Quad Core - Which is better, Intel or AMD? I've got more experience with Intel, and have not had any significant problems with it. Hubby's desktop runs an AMD 64 Athlon x2, which seems to freeze up even when he's playing his facebook poker. My second question is, what size RAM do you suggest? I've been thinking about 4GB DDR3...would this be over the top, or ideal? Third, the hard drive. I'm thinking of 500GB SATA (with 7200rpm vs 5400rpm). Does it REALLY make much difference, considering what it'll be used for? I'd love to go with a solid state, but they are more than I can realistically afford. I'm thinking I only need an integrated graphics card...the standard? I'm looking at minimum of a 15" screen, up to an 18". I had a Toshiba laptop (that my son broke on me), which had awesome sound and picture. My other laptop is a Dell Inspiron, which I've been more than pleased with, but when it comes to multi-tasking, it's a bit slow. It takes FOREVER for vids to load, for Office applications to load, etc. Our desktops are Dells, and have had no problems other than hubby's has VISTA and it SUCKS! Also, his freezes up on him. I really don't want to go with HP or Compaq. I do NOT want face recognition or fingerprint whatever. I don't even care if it has a webcam (I never use a cam, and really don't trust them not being accessible to "outsiders" peeping in unexpectedly). I'm taking off for a bit, but will check back when we get home. Thank you Btw, it HAS to be a laptop, because I can rest my wrists right on the platform. I am not able to support my wrists in the air on a desktop. Whatever is wrong with me prohibits my using a desktop due to the strain. You are shooting too high and too expensive. |

Electronics are mass produced, with a very high acceptable failure rate. It is cheaper to send out a few new ones then to use better components. A cheap capacitor can cost .05, a high quality can cost .50 or more(just an example). Thats not a big deal when you build a couple of one off pieces, but when you need to buy a million or two thats a huge difference. Now multiply that by the number of components, and you can see how a typical laptop of exacting standards, could cost 3500.00 or more. if you look online, you can find them. Now we are back to buying a cheap Lapytop that will do what you need for a while. and the difference between a $1200 laptop and a $4-600.00 is not that big a deal. especially considering the OP is asking on GLP for Puter advice... That tells me they are not exactly a power user... So OP take it for what its worth. 5 or 6 years ago you would have dropped a 1200 any laptop that would check email. Dont even bother trying to get the latest greatest laptop, it really wont matter. If you cant keep it running right, youll end up with a 1200 paper weight. |

Its a laptop. I do suggest getting the BEST GRAPHICS CARD YOU CAN AFFORD. and the MOST MEMORY you can afford. those are by far, the best 2 quality's to look for. read internet revies, but dont get bogged down by them. just look for any major issues with the model your looking at. dont worry about someone saying "when i stand on my head, the monitor looks fuzzy". some people are just to critical. they should go into politics, theyll never get anything done worth while... |

Thanks much. When I got this laptop (a bday present from my dad), it was considered top of the line. But that was many years ago. It's a Dell w/ Intel Core2 Duo, T5250 @ 1.50GHz, 986MHz, with 0.99 GB of Ram. I really like this laptop, and have had ZERO problems with it, other than with the multi-tasking I'm going to be doing, it'll be a bit too slow. Thanks again! We had a desktop (back in 1999) and was pleased with it, until about 3 weeks before the warranty was up. I brought my computer in to be fixed (over 40 miles away), as the fan stopped working, and it was really doing some weird stuff (shutting down while in the middle of doing something). They called about 12 days later, and I went to pick it up. I got the computer home, but didn't have the time to hook it up and try it, as we leaving on a long-time planned trip for 6 days. When we got home, the next day I hooked it up, and ran it, it still kept shutting down when doing something. I called the repair facility, and they told me to bring it back. At this point, we just had a couple days left under warrant. After I got up there, they told me it would take them 5 days before they could even look at it, which would put us OUT of our warranty time. I told them I brought it to them BEFORE warranty was up...they just shrugged. I asked what it was going to cost...since they SAID they fixed it the time before, and they said it would probably be around the $500 mark. Needless to say, I took my computer back home and told them to FO! I also called Gateway Customer Service, and told them I would NEVER buy anything from them again...and I meant it. My hubby's Dell only had one issue...it kept going to blue screen, so I called them. All that was the problem was that I had to take the side panel off, and pop out the memory cards, then reset them into place. Seems that during shipping, the memory cards can come loose (not locked in all the way). It was no big deal. Otherwise, with 3 computers from them, we've never had a problem (other than the one with Vista and AMD...which I hope to get to upgrade it to Windows 7). I don't think the problems are so much as Dell manufacturer related, but rather, with Vista and AMD itself. And I've read elsewhere that regardless of manufacturer, it's a known given that 10% of ALL computers are lemons? If you were one of the students I work with I would suggest a Dell. The 3 year warranty is worth it. All of our PC stuff is Dell because I insist (I'm the SysAdmin) on having a good (in my case four-hour response) warranty service. I would also suggest you figure in a backup drive. USB2 is fine and they are cheap. |
