Fainting is different from just passing out and losing consciousness. With fainting there's always a spinning feeling accompanied by a light sick to stomach sensation as you slip down a mental vortex into the unconscious state. And fainting doesn't typically last very long, a minute or less, before your body fights back to the awake state. For myself, I know what triggers my fainting spells so I avoid that situation.
