Boy calls 911 to complain about sister hogging computer

A five-year-old B.C. boy received a personal lecture from the Mounties after he called 911 to report that his older sister wouldn't share the computer.

The Kelowna boy called 911 last week after threatening to call police on his six-year-old sister, who was hogging the family computer. He told the operator that he needed police help.

When RCMP officers arrived and saw that there was no actual emergency, they gave the little boy a talking to about when it's appropriate to call 911.

But RCMP Const. Steve Holmes told ctvbc.ca that adults can be just as clueless as children when it comes to calling 911.

"We get a lot of weird calls that are not emergency -- some as trivial as asking for sports scores or looking for a taxi," Holmes said.

He added that people often call the emergency line to report historical crimes, such as bikes that were stolen a week ago.
