Our food supply system is shot. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that Cargill Meat Solutions Inc. has recalled some 8,500 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The recall was issued after three people – two in Maine and one in New York – became ill from a strain of E. coli. The strain, E. coli 026, can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in severe cases, kidney failure. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, which became aware of the illnesses on Aug. 5, said that it had determined there was a link between the E. coli outbreaks and the ground beef being recalled by Cargill. None of the three individuals who reported E. coli-related sickness required hospitalization. The USDA says it believes certain BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Virginia received the products.
