Timing could be off as well, as the poster above suggested, have you serviced this vehicle?

Op I hate to hi-jack a little bit but I never thought of posting here about a car issue.

Can anyone tell me why my 2000 sunfire (100k) idles so wierd.

I will be sitting in a drive through and the idle goes from 800 rpm - 1200 rpm and flucuates like it never has before.. Plus there is a slight bearing type low squel coming from the pulley/belt area.. I know its not the altenator I just had it replaced.. Any idea?

OP sorry to hi-jack again.. I hate to clutter the forum with non conspiracy threads though :)

You're probably low on antifreeze

Seriously

If your water pump starts leaking

1. It squeals a little

2. Low coolant causes the engine to rev up and down as air pockets go through the pump.

Wait till the engine is cool ( let it sit at least 2 hours ) and take the radiator cap off and look inside the radiator.

If you don't see antifreeze ...you have a leak somewhere.

Control module? You're not hitting on all cylinders.

As for the noises, the serpentine belt has a tension recoil that might not be working.

Re: Any shade tree mechanics out there? My engine will turn over but will not start. What could be the problem?
if its not firing AT ALL, ( kicks, putters etc ) then it can only be spark. (assuming you have good fuel pressure) there is a tire guage looking thing on the fuel rail under the stupid plastic POS Chrysler Cover, stick something in it see if gas shoots out. Im sure it will, that means one of two things.

one- the computer for some reason is telling the injectors not to fire

two- the coil is bad.

( there is no distributor on your van )

what year is the car?
is it getting fuel?
getting spark?

2000 Dodge caravan, it is getting fuel, spark, and engine turns, but never starts. Could it have jumped time?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1084427

I would suggest its an ignition problem based on what I've seen here. But I've had the ECU go out with the exact same symptoms too, the quickest/easiest way to answer your question is to simply plug into an ODB tool and get an answer.

yeah, buy a stupid timing light- that will tell you if it's getting spark and/or whether its jumped timing.

and a can of starting fluid- that will tell you if it's not getting gas.

Its impossible to diagnose the problem with the info given.

Everyone is just guessing.

Step 1. Get a scan tool on it

Step 2. Stay off the conspiracy forum when looking for help.

Re: Any shade tree mechanics out there? My engine will turn over but will not start. What could be the problem?
start small then to big its about know how to narrow the problem down and fixing it

etc
gas check
fuel pump can you here it running check
battery not dead check
starting clicking? or not check
plug wires check
spark plugs check
etc its like you asking me if you have cancer over the phone

Fuel...check

Spark Plugs, OK, brand new.

Distributor OK.

Plug Wires OK.

Fuel Pump OK.

Battery OK...the engine turns over.

Engine will turn over OK, normal, but the darn thing will not start. I think it might have jumped time.

there IS some stupid advice here. and any car newer than 95 (OBD 2) Would certainly benefit from having a scan tool. assuming the computer has a code in it, and OP stated the engine light is not on. How ever, I disagree that this is all bull shit info. I replaced a transmition in my driveway last month. and some other replies here, yours too, are half way intelegent.

Re: Any shade tree mechanics out there? My engine will turn over but will not start. What could be the problem?
Autozone will do the scan for free. Unless you have a free tow then that is $$.

I bet it is a sensor of some sort that has gone bad. Where was the service performed? I only ask because mechanics will service your vehicle and create additional problems to extort you. Not all shops, but if the lowest bidder always wins, you have a higher probability.

If you don't have a check engine light that is a good sign. A solid check engine light is an emissions related problem, a blinking check engine means turn the car off as soon as safely possible.

If your crank or cam angle sensors are bad it wont fire.
