Any shade tree mechanics out there? My engine will turn over but will not start. What could be the problem?

Op I hate to hi-jack a little bit but I never thought of posting here about a car issue.

Can anyone tell me why my 2000 sunfire (100k) idles so wierd.

I will be sitting in a drive through and the idle goes from 800 rpm - 1200 rpm and flucuates like it never has before.. Plus there is a slight bearing type low squel coming from the pulley/belt area.. I know its not the altenator I just had it replaced.. Any idea?

I would suggest its an ignition problem based on what I've seen here. But I've had the ECU go out with the exact same symptoms too, the quickest/easiest way to answer your question is to simply plug into an ODB tool and get an answer.

start small then to big its about know how to narrow the problem down and fixing it

etc
gas check
fuel pump can you here it running check
battery not dead check
starting clicking? or not check
plug wires check
spark plugs check
etc its like you asking me if you have cancer over the phone


Fuel...check

Spark Plugs, OK, brand new.

Distributor OK.

Plug Wires OK.

Fuel Pump OK.

Battery OK...the engine turns over.



Engine will turn over OK, normal, but the darn thing will not start. I think it might have jumped time.

Timing could be off as well, as the poster above suggested, have you serviced this vehicle?

there IS some stupid advice here. and any car newer than 95 (OBD 2) Would certainly benefit from having a scan tool. assuming the computer has a code in it, and OP stated the engine light is not on. How ever, I disagree that this is all bull shit info. I replaced a transmition in my driveway last month. and some other replies here, yours too, are half way intelegent.

sounds like vapor lock. let the car cool down and it will start.

Timing could be off as well, as the poster above suggested, have you serviced this vehicle?


Had it serviced last month with new spark plug wires, distributor cap. Has been working fine since then.

Muffler bearings?

Autozone will put the computer on it for free BTW.
