I agree. If you look at the major american auto companies, they went back to the lines and designs of those ages. A lot of throw back cars out now that look great. All the new Chargers,Camero's and Mustangs look pretty beefy now. They even went back to he Hemi!!! The only problem is no one can afford them. I paid of my WRX last year and I am not planning on getting a new car any time soon. That thing can get me up anything and its fast as a dart. I went up a hill the other day that I thought there was no way I could clear it. My friends 4x4 F250 couldn't make it. Not enough weight on the back tires.

Re: new cars are a waste of money. Who wants to buy depreciating assets these days that lose thousands driving them off the lot? Car salesmen are outdated. I want to buy factory direct with minimal overhead.

If you are concerned about overhead, the sales person should be the least of your concerns. I Just delivered a mid size sedan. I Spent 3 hours with the customer showing them multiple vehicles and 1 hour taking care of the delivery. My earnings where $140! Due to the lose of my previous brand (Saturn) I have been at a few dealerships and they all pay about the same.

Todays sales consultants make money on volume.

Actually, the cars of the 70's were largely overall better than the cars today, at least they were heavy duty and not cheap tinfoil and plastic front wheel drive shit boxes...

But realistically, every era of automotive history has had it's DUDS... Even in the 50's there were many lesser known brands and models that were really just terrible... And then there was the EDSEL, which was really just as good as any of the era, but the styling was a MAJOR departure from the norm, and ultimately doomed the car to the scrapheap of history.

The 60's also had their noteworthy failures, the Corvair and the VW Beetle among them... And others.

The 70's had MANY more memorable BAD cars, as the auto makers tried to make the things lighter and smaller and more fuel efficient, but the best of the era were the ones that frankly just did what a car is supposed to do - KICK SOME SERIOUS ASS - and ignored all the trendy economic and environmental bullshit... Like the Camaro / Firebird / Z-28 / TransAm an many others.

The 80's saw a deepening and taking-over of the car industry by general SUCKAGE, wit very few decent cars... Until the Mustang re-ignited the muscle car wars in the mid 80's. Even then though, they were cheaper and lighter and less heavy duty than their 60's predecessors.

The 90's saw increased technology making up for the flaws of cars, and especially the universal adoption of EFI brought performance levels back to near acceptability.

Since then though, it's been pretty much more of the same with image and shallow crap taking over more and more of what a car SHOULD be...

Please note, that ANY car driving the front wheels is an automatic FAIL, as is an car with less than a V-8 engine.

Sure, we've all owned plenty of little FWD wheeze-box road slugs, but they are generally regarded with about as much fondness as a washer machine, and we rarely genuinely enjoy them or miss them when they finally give up and take their rightful place in the scrap yard.

Cars are doomed to only get continually worse as the years and circumstances continue to deteriorate... Already what we take for granted as an acceptable daily driver wold have been resounding ridiculed as a golf cart with delusions of grandeur just a few short years ago, and I deeply fear that sooner or later miserable automotive abortions such as that Smart car debacle or that $2500 fiasco pile of junk from TaTa out of India will gradually become more regarded as acceptable.

As for me? I'll continue to do what I've done for a number of years now and pretty basically BUILD MY OWN.

Its no wonder that American car companies are going the way of the dinosaur - their shitty sales "tactics," scummy sales people, and "big volume" stealerships say it all!

I test drove 5 cars a few weeks back - a couple of Honda's, a couple of Toyota's, a Hyundai, and a new Ford Fiesta. ALL dealerships were totally professional, nice, clean AND weren't scumbags - EXCEPT the Ford dealer!

The freakin' salesman asked how tall I was (I'm 6'4"). After I told him, he asked why I wasn't interested in getting something bigger (like a crustang). NO other dealer asked me why I was looking at an economy car.

The Ford dealer didn't have any brochures, didn't even KNOW if there were any specials going on right now (financing, incentives, etc), AND his office was dirty and shitty.

I couldn't believe the "good 'ol boy" feeling that I got when I walked into the dealership. I've been treated that way by GM and Dodge dealerships as well.....

All are douche bags and employ douche bags. Period!

Nobody and I mean nobody should buy new cars, hell I know a millionaire that drives 1995 F250 and his wife has about the same year Lincoln. I just last spring bought my 16yo a 1994 camry.....sweet ride for 2k.

I have a 1997 F350 crew 7.3 powerstroke and my wife drive a 04 expedition all paid for.....car payments are stupid and always have been.

Enough with the trailer parks and the low-income housing to dimwitted crazies so they can pretend to be responsible adults and bear children, generating 5 to 10 crazy kids loaded to the gills with genes that will insure they are just as crazy and worthless.
