Meditation Techniques?
I meditate lying down and for the first few minutes, I can always feel my heart beating rapidly, its quite loud and off putting, so I have to focus my breathing.

I know there is not a given position for meditation, but does anybody else meditate lying down and get rapid heart movements?

thanks

I can't meditate lying down, I fall asleep. Mantra's work best for me.

I do sometimes..I try not to though because I always end up falling asleep. I have had the heart beating thing and some issues with not being able to pace my breathing but the only thing I know to do is open up more time...for unwinding before hand.

Be glad that your heart is beating.
Shouldn't you focus on your breathing anyways?

I used the Gayatri for a long time but it started to feel more like deity worship..I get much more just sitting on the ground quietly. :)

Different Strokes for different folks :)

( Gayatri did seem very powerful though)

Re: Meditation Techniques?
i lie down when i meditate...i generally start off with the thought:

"let there be peace within the hearts and minds of all beings everywhere"

after a few repeats this brings my mind to peace

from there i will breathe slowly in with the thought "i" and breathe out slowly with the thought "am"

this is my meditation:

just i am...just peace...just the desire that all beings may experience this peace of knowing the eternal i am

peace,

Re: Meditation Techniques?
best way to start is to sit up and breath in and in your mind 'see' the breath go in your mouth and round your lungs and back out again...then you will become calm and completely in control quite quickly. do this with your eyes 75% shut...not all the way!

and see it work... good luck :)

Re: Meditation Techniques?
I usually have the best experiences laying down flat, with my arms/shoulders relaxed and flat on the floor. It's important to make sure your feet point straight up(prop with pillows works for me). I use different tones to get my body in tune first. I can recommend a site (www.resistance2010.com) that offers many different techniques and all things related. For me the most difficult thing to do was "let go". To tune into the cosmos and the universal mind you must first minimize the ego and "just be". Sound easy? It's not. It's taken at least 3 months of meditating twice a day to be able to have a productive session. Diet is important(alkaline bodies are easier to tune). It's also ry important to turn off all electrical devices in your meditation area. I hope this offers a little insight. Please give the site a thorough look through.

Seriously, invest in a meditation pillow if you're going to meditate in a seated position. OMG, it creates perfect alignment, takes pressure off the lower spine. Blissful!

Re: Meditation Techniques?
There is only one true form of meditation but you can't learn it in a book - Transcendental Meditation. It is not like anything else. It's actually the opposite of everything else.

Re: Meditation Techniques?
It sounds like you get excited when you make progress and that pulls you back to your awake state.

There are, perceptively, several stages. It seems you would do best dedicating some 'calm-down' time before you attempt to meditate. Ironically meditation IS calming down. But separating the two may help your rapid heart beat issue.

Try to calm down first then proceed.

I typically focus on my breathing as a main method of relaxing.

I did discover a new method that got me to my meditative state in a few minutes. I perceived the universe as large as I could while also perceiving the smallest point I could. Then let the two ends bend into each other. Allowing your mind to flip with it.

It takes practice, I'm sure.

Meditation is one of my great passions. Though I am a free-spirit so my terminology and knowledge is self constructed.

Any time you need help with meditating just ask. I don't mind helping others int hat field.

Re: Meditation Techniques?
Every one will tell you there are specific ways to do this right. Honestly, what ever works for you is the right path. Just as long as you observe healthy posture and don't do anything that may cause you harm physically AND mentally.

And the last lesson, the most important lesson...

Learn to play by the rules then learn how to break them.

Best example would be music. Learn the theory and how to play using the 'rules' of scales, progressions, ect. But when you get so good you learn how to think out of the box, essentially breaking the rules of music. Meditation is similar in my understanding, it may be different for others.

Ultimately, listen to good advise and adapt it for you.

You may try wearing a pair of glasses, any type, and drap a dark cloth over them. You can keep your eyes open and see NO light. It helps if you have trouble with eye flutter/twitching.

Try removing any metals on your body. Rings, glasses, necklaces, ect...it all can interfere with your natural environment.

Same with power appliances such as fans and lights. Man made light is dirty and not good for meditation.

You may also try holding your hands in running water and vision the negative energies leaving your body through the water.

You may also try holding a cup of water in a glass cup and pray to it, thank it and love it. Then consume just before the session.

Even sex prior to can help.

Avoid alcohol, tobacoo, sugar, caffiene, ect for 24 hours. Not necessary but some have issues with one or many of those bodily contaminents.

As an example how easy it really can be, a school child starring off into space is a form of meditation. You may be trying to hard.
