Jupiter has always been visible (that's why it's been known for centuries), but since we don't know the night sky that well, we usually don't know which of all the unknown little stars is actually Jupiter. When I was a kid, about thirty years ago, I took a late walk and noticed a "new star" in my favorite constellation Ursa Major. I did some research the next day, and found out it was Jupiter, which was unusually bright at the time, and happened to be in the only constellation where I would have noticed it. |

Amateur Astronomer User ID: 1104906 United States 09/20/2010 08:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Venus is almost always the brightest celestial object other than the Sun or Moon. Jupiter is almost always the next brightest. Both of them are almost always brighter than the brightest fixed star, Sirius. Too often people are unobservant. They may notice those bright planets out of the corner of their eyes for a split second and dismiss them as airplanes. BTW, none of the planets is ever in Ursa Major. |

Astronomy 101. Jupiter then ? Early history of astronomy "Prehistoric Ages. Earth and Moon Since ancient times, man has gazed up at the stars at night. Since prehistoric times, man has observed the phases of the Moon during the lunar month, and the passage of the Sun during the solar year. Stone Age cave paintings still exist that show the phases of the Moon. Some bodies moved faster in the night sky than the surrounding stars. These were the planets visible to the unaided eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The word "planet" comes from the Greek word "planetes," which means "nomad" (wanderer, traveler). To the Babylonians and Sumerians before them, the planets were "stray sheep." [link to www.ephemeris.com] |
