Ay, ay ay... sigh The Mayans are Native Americans. They do exist you idiot. Have you ever heard a Native American from the Lakotas speak? They have the same accent. They are the same people!!!!!! Forget about names, its DNA that counts. Nothing to do with political names or borders. WHEW!!! That took a lot of thinking to write. I was about to let my typing dyslexia to show through. God forbid the spelling police attacks me.

The object in debate is the Maya civilization if you did not get it...

This civilization is gone and just stupid people will give credibility to ancient astronomy than to NASA.

Checked the wayback... The research link from Mark Halpern has said "The CMBR webpage will return someday." since 2008. In 2007 the site said "The CMBR webpage will return soon."

The site has not been active for a loooong time before this event, nothing to look into concerning that!!

Re: Huge asteroid will hit Antartic in 2012
After a lengthy discussion with my son over dinner, we've figured out the main problem here: This asteroid has no official designation. If it had an official designation, then we could refer to it and sound like we knew what we were talking about. So, in the interest of the appearence of validity, my son has designated this asteroid "Man-Bear-Pig-2010 or MBP-2010. This naming convention takes into account that, while it is reported to exist, there are no known verifiable sightings (or citings, for that matter).

Now that we can talk about MBP-2010, it's time to start talking about the aftermath when MBP-2010 hits Antarctica.

Since we know so little about MBP-2010, let's take a worst-case scenareo and say that it is nickle/iron with little if any porous material (to elimitate near-earth explosion). An 800m asteroid would begin to break up as it neared the earth's surface, but not enough that the break-up would vary the impact of it's mass. The strike is estimated (via an online strike-calculator which I leave to your googlish skills) to create an earthquake of 8.0 (figuring ice for 700 ft, then water for 1600 ft, then basalt for the remainder of the 4.5 mi deep crater). The most powerful earthquake in recorded history to strike Antarctica was 8.1 in 1998. The ice sheet would survive, so the claims that it would shatter like glass don't ring true.

But let's say that I'm wrong and the ice sheet did shatter, and slide into the ocean. It would literally take months if not years for it all to make it into the ocean, whereupon it would still have to melt before its effects were truly seen. So yes, NY and LA and DC are all toast, but I'm not going to cry over any of those. Here in PA I'll have ocean-front property! Woohoo!

Most likely the ice-hole left by MBP-2010 will be quickly filled and re-frozen. There will be little ejecta, as it is striking ice and water, not land. Depending on the angle and direction of impace, it might not even create a tsunami (if it came in at 45 degrees, from the north, there should only be small tidal anomalies.).

I hope that this helps all ice-hole enthusiasts in their discussion of MBP-2010. I promise to take my tongue out of my cheek when discussing possibilities.

it is also likely it could be a "wag the dog" story planted to excuse our "not mine" official government of thier unconstitutional laws and actions, I wouldn't buy it without more evidence than "she says, he says", at the same time I think we all have plenty of reason to build our bomb shelters for all the other reasons we talk about, prudent.

If you go here and [link to www.phas.ubc.ca] and click the link on Mark Halpern then click on "Research Web Site" then you will have your answer

I think Marc Halpern was the name on the original article.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1053451

I don't think so. Mark Halpern's interest is cosmology.

It is entirely possible that the entire article is a hoax. However, if the article is a result of something taken out of contest frome something someone at UBC said then it might be Brett Gladman whose interest is planetary astronomy and asteroids.

I don't know if there is any truth to this asteroid threat, but I have enough imagination to envision what the real consequences of an impact from an 800 meter asteroid would be regardless were it hits. An 800 meter asteroid would barely even notice our atmosphere before impact, even if it is mostly ice, like a comet for instance. At the speed it will be traveling the impact would be comparable to something like a thousand nuclear bombs going off at once. But probably much worse I'm sure. The impact would throw massive ammounts of water and earth into the atmosphere and block off a large amount of sunlight for years, killing off vegatation and animal life... civilization would fall. Even if this asteroid misses us, there is an asteroid or comet out there with our name on it. Its not a question of if, its a question of when.

This is because we just can't see them, except from space or in balloons... at least the really dangerous ones that are inside the earth's orbit.
 Quoting: herrw 1093567

We can see Venus and mercury just fine without satellites or balloons, but I understand your point that, in general, it is possible for an asteroid to approach from a sunward direction unexpectedly before its first detected and leave us with little warning; the story as it exists though does not fit this profile. If it was detected 4-5 years ago during the BLAST experiment then it can't be hanging around near the sun in the sky perpetually since then and still have an orbit that could ever intersect earth's.

I wouldn't exactly call it a rebuttal, but rather a tongue-in-cheek response to a lot of the misinformation that's being bandied about. Honestly, this is an undesignated, unverified report from one website that's been blown very out of proportion. 800m diameter asteroids don't destroy civilization worldwide. The fireball wouldn't travel past the horizon. The crust would not be punctured. Indeed, the ice-shelf wouldn't shatter. Even a direct hit at 90 degrees on the center of the south pole wouldn't wipe out the ice-shelf, although fractures would probably form.

Again, it's the equivalent of a 8.0 earthquake, which Antarctica has seen before. I believe we had a 6.3 in the past 3 years. I track these things daily... an 8.0 would be noticeable, but not devestating. It would certainly be hella interesting, from a scientific standpoint, however.

And again, I have a note out to the professor which I suspect sits at the center of this minor controversy. I hope to either confirm or debunk this soon.

The science behind the apocalypse in 2012
Of all the theories about the Earth undergotheng lthethis seems to be the most scientifically substantiated , even thoughthe This builds pthe circumstantial evidence , interpretations and guesses . Exactly when the world will be gthe below will hardly nthegon researchers to predict with certainty until it's too late.

According to Patrick Geryl , a Belgian amateur researchers interested in astronomy and archeology , the world will undergotheng to take place on 21 December 2012. His first book on the subject , "The Orion Prophecy " , was released in 1998 and translated into several sprthek. It was like his recent book "The World Cataclysm in 2012 " ( 2005 ) and "How to Survive 2012 " ( 2006 ) served as the inspiration for the film " 2012 " . Much is taken directly by the frthes books , including the unsinkable rescue vessels , but Geryl pthepoints are all dressed in Hollywood's exaggerated style .

Amateur Kosmo Lodge and archaeologist Patrick Geryl interviewed on Youtube .

Patrick Geryl believe that bthethe Egyptian civilization and the Mayan culture of South America are heirs to a maximum oftheonly one civilization that was destroyed in a great cosmic catastrophe for approximately 11 500 ther ago . Geryl linking this ancient civilization with the mythical Atlantis , and believe they have found evidence that bthethe Mayan Indians and Egyptians knew when the nextthedan disaster would hit the Earth - ther 2012th

Apocalypse 2012 has been widely mentioned pthe Internet and it has been published numerous books on the subject . It refers to the prophecies frthen Nostradamus and the Chinese I Ching , it refers to asteroids , planets invisible and specific positions of celestial bodies . Patrick Geryl , however, that seems to come closest to a scientific explanation pthe why 2012 would be the ther dthe Judgement Day occurs .

Sun fther Earth's spin axis to flip
The physical principle behind the disaster that will affect Geryl believe the Earth has its origin in the sun . The sun has a well-known cycle pthe eleven ther in which one can observe an increasing number of sunspots pthe its surface , after which the sun's magnetic poles switch places . During this period , dthe The sun has mthenga sunspots cause solar activity, geomagnetic storms elevated pthe Earth . Then repeat the same thing again, sthe to 22 ther later, The Sun theTERFthett the same polarity again .

Recently documented NASA's Swift satellite just as surprising as huge explosion on the star EV Lacertae , only 16 light years away from us . Image is an artist's interpretation of the explosion . Photo : Casey Reed / NASA .

According to The Sun also Geryl have much longer cycles , of which the most interesting lasts 11500-12000 ther. When the sun 's completed athedan cycle occurs a very powerful solar flares, one 'sthe called coronal mass ejection that hit Earth . Recently observed NASA's Swift satellite one 'sthesame super outbreak pthe a star that is nthesomething less than the Sun . The star is in binary star system II Pegasi and according to astronomers utplthewhen one 'sthesame outbreak all life pthe its potential planets . Star thetergick then confess to a quiettheYet again .

Since the Earth and the Sun has a magnetic polarity 'sthe , the incoming magnetic vthegene pushing away one of the poles , thus turning the Earth's rotation axis . Earth's internal disputether mostly of viscous magma with an hthevp but relatively small iron core . The iron core which is the magnet itself and there is the first person will be turned upside down , and therefore spin theopposite t hthell . Magma will be litigated in the new movement and this movement will be transported up to the crust . Since the Earth pthe because of the rotation has a bulge at the equator , thethe the continents enthert to accompany the movement of sliding up or down pthe Earth's surface . Pthe crust noted therefore just a quick stop and then start the Earth rotating theopposite t hthell . Only at the stop , when the bulge at the equator is lost , the continents will be able to slide vertically , to stop thethe fast rotation occurred in gtheng again .

Shock wave from the sun exposes Earth to strong magnetic fields that make the Earth magnetic iron core twist .

1st The crust , magma and iron core is rotating in the same direction .

2nd The iron core begins to twist . Magma tries to follow and earth rotation is slowing.

3rd After less than one days have iron core flip upside down and thus rotates in the opposite direction . The effect at Earth's surface is to completely stop the rotation , with the bulge at the equator disappears and continents can slide vertically .

4th Magma has caught up with the kernel's rotation and also got the crust to begin to rotate in the new direction . The surface begins again to bulge at the equator and continents are stuck in their new positions .

Continents shifted 3 000 km pthe one days
Pthe Earth will one 'sthedan cataclysmic event mean complete disaster . All volcanoes will immediately explode and mthenga mountains collapse . Since the Earth at the equator is moving at a speed of over 1600 km / hsthe will change the direction of rotation to provide a braking and then accelerating out of a total of 3000 km / hpthe one day. The oceans will dthe to pthe because of its inertia to continue traveling around the Earth in the original direction , which will create a huge 1.5 km high flodvtheg gther several laps around the Earth .

Geryls computations show that the continents at the same time will move about 3000 km north pthe one hand and as much south pthe opposite side . Deserts in the Arctic ports Pollstheand it 'sthe further .

A typical tsunami is bad enough , but the
Geryl warn will be 1500 meters
high . Thanks to the observant reader who saw that the
last image is not envisioned a tsunami .

Effects pthe Earth at a rotational reversal Geryl compare with the apocalypse described in various religious texts . Flood occurs in almost all religions , but also that the sun will gthe up where the former went down mentioned in bthethe Bible and Islam , and that the earth will shake and the sky lit up.

Explains Ice Ages
Geryl believe that a rotation reversal is an excellent explanation pthe glacial periods , dthe continents in the course of one day slide into all-new temperature zones . This explains why according to him is found petrified rainforest pthe Antarctica and why mammoths found with undigested food in the stomach .

This theory explains onlythes not all the smaller ice ages that occurred , like ice ages that occurred at times other than play with 11 500 thers intervals , but it does not invalidate them . How long is it between ice ages scientists still disagree about , but the strongest theory right now is for a typical warm period between ice ages about 12 000 ther , and it is a bit over 11 000 ther since it is now pthegtheonly one heating period , called halocene, began .

The Earth in its history changed magnetic poles have been scientifically proven , but it is enthert to know when and how mthenga gthenger . According to the researchers , it takes between 5 000 and 5 million ther between substitutions .

Maya Indians followed the sun
Maya Indians were possessed of the box in the time and made detailed calendars . They were skilled astronomers and could include correctly predict mthenförmörkelse several thousand ther in the future . Patrick Geryl pthepcther that he succeeded onlythe including Maya 'sthe called Dresden Code , which he believes is used to calculate the sunspot cycle .

Maya Indians were obsessed with following the passage of time and could predict lunar eclipses thousands of years into the future . Yet, their calendar ends December 21, 2012 ...

It is dthe remarkable that the Mayas had their 5125 ther lthenga Large therscykel stop at December 21 ther 2012th Patrick Geryl pthepcther that he managed to decipher the formula Mayas used for their calculations of the solar cycles , and dthe especially the great cycle that he believes are identified by their calendar . He claims to have also found evidence pthe that the Indians were aware of sunspots near the solar poles that are not gther observing frthen Earth .

In his book presents Geryl all the calculations he had done and their interpretations of the Maya calendar , conclusions , however, mthenga scientists ifrthegassed . It should alsothe framhtheremark is that archaeologists found evidence that different Mayan cities used the Great therscykeln bit different , and that it alsothe may have had a cyclical effect , namely that it had nthesomething given out.

Egyptians predicttheDDE vinethe 2012
Egyptian pyramids are very precisely constructed with exact mthett and their relationships. It has previously been known that the pyramid located in line with a star map , but not thethe as the stars pcther today , but as they did for 12 000 ther ago . Geryl By adding modern astronomical data to define the pyramids pcther under Orion 's constellationthe as it was 9792 BCE, the time of the last apocalypse as Maya calculations .

Model of the fabled Egyptian labyrinth as the Roman historian Herodotus visited in 448 BC There will be Egypt's astronomical secrets , and Geryl are convinced that they are proof that he is entitled , if they can be found .

According Geryl it is no coincidence that the bthethe Egyptians and the Maya Indians built similar pyramids as astronomical models . Those who made the drawings of the pyramids may not have been nthegra other than just surviving frthen the maximumtheonly one civilization that we call Atlantis .

The Egyptians kept their most important secrets and knowledge of a mythological labyrinth . That it exists , we know frthen the Greek historian Herodotus, who ther 448 BC got tothemation to visit the facility . The labyrinth is already dthe have been over 4000 ther old! According to him, surpassed the pyramids in terms of masterful architecture . It consisted of 1,500 rooms above ground and equal mthenga underground . This will include Golden Circle have been , a place mentioned in the Egyptian Book of the Dead and where you stored documents on Egypt's entire history and all their astronomical knowledge . Maze also servesthe to perform advanced astronomical calculations .

Patrick Geryl am convinced that when we find the maze , thethe will all his assumptions , estimates and conclusions to be proved .

Egyptian Labyrinth Found
It is amazing the story is that Patrick Geryl actually found the maze - what he pthepcther is not just fanciful calculations and numbers game , but he has been through their interpretations of star maps were able to figure out the maze mtheste lie .

Egyptian archaeologists helps Patrick Geryl to search the area he pointed out . Ground radar detects buildings in the sand !

In the mid -1800s , although archaeologists have found some remnants of the building Pollstheit , but the anstheg that only ruins theterstod . Geryl did not give up as easily , but made contact with Egyptian authorities and for more than one ther since he got the help of archaeologists to plumb the Pollsthewith the ground penetrating radar . He found dthe a building's structure five feet in the sand that is 304 x 244 meters high and 20 feet high . The labyrinth seems intact !

Unfortunately, today the channel frthen the Nile Pollstheit , which made the whole maze is saturated with groundwater . The discovery of the labyrinth has been confirmed by the Director of Egypt's Supreme rtheof the Egyptian antiquities , Dr. Zahi Hawass , however, as Patrick Geryl forbidden to publish data on the discovery . In late 2009, was working with Egyptian authorities to build large water pipes that channel will be headed in , and to empty maze pthe water . How lthengt they occurred has yet to gthett that fthe track pthe.

NASA warns of solar flares in 2012
The U.S. Space Agency NASA follows the solar activity and also try tothe present theories to predict future outbreaks . Onr 2006, researchers presented a theory that there is a fiftythesolcykel rig , where sunspots are transported over the solar surface to reappear cyclically .

NASA follows the sunspot cycle . An increase in activity is predicted in 2012 , but far from Geryls concerns .

It was noted a sharp solmaximun ther 1958 , dthe we observed strong aurora right down in Mexico . Researchers frthen the American Center for Atmospheric Research says that the sun today shows evidence pthe a " calm before the storm " . Mausumi Dikpati who led the study believes that the next outbreak may be about 30 to 50 percent higher than last solar cycle , probably the strongest pthe 50 ther , but probably not as much as dthe. According to her calculations , this occurs at ther 2012th

Survival Groups
Around the world there are people who take Geryls Farhathegor pthe very seriously . This applies to either construct ttheline bthetake that manage to tumble into the huge vtheAnnexes and thrown against rocks and other obstacles , or to take refuge on high ground . It mtheMust be pthe at least 1.5 kilometers in height pthe a solid rock that does not collapse .

Some groups are planning to build bunkers pthe mountain in Africa , but it is enthert to fthe confesstheYet the authorities dthe mountains often are nature reserves. It mtheste bury themselves in the days that lasts for solar flares to protect against the sharp strtheRadiation . Besides food and tools to upload with useful books on everything ifrthen how to farm the writings on medicine and science . All electronics will burn up pthe Because of the electromagnetic pulse and all buildings pthe face of the earth will be destroyed in the powerful earthquake and rinsed off in the subsequent flodvthegene . Just what you have with them is left .

A different kind of survivor . On this famous Mayan pyramid illustration shows a collapse of a volcano and lava, vomit , while the land flooded .

Those who survived the first few days will be faced with another problem , a winter that pthe mthenga manner similar to nuclear winter . Thick clouds frthen the mthenga volcanoes will shield the sun and create a winter climate as being closer to 50 ther.

Those who get through this trial will be able to populate the world again and hopefully bring civilization forward.

Patrick Geryl
Geryl is a Belgian amateur researchers . He has no academic record , but he is quick to pthepoint that it was not Einstein either.

Geryl was first considered for more than 30 ther ago with his book " A New Space -Time Dimension " ( 1979 ) . In the book , he put forward criticism of the theory of relativity , inter alia, that the special and general relativity in certain situations give different results to those estimates - everthe mtheste least one of them to be incorrect.

Utifrthen his critique of the theory of relativity , he presented several predictions about space , including an accelerating universe and the existence of very old galaxies lthefar away fromthen us , traveling very fast . Pthe the time everyone thought that that was exactly the opposite . Ten ther later proved that the universe really is accelerating expansion , and in 2008 discovered ancient galaxies , traveling nearly the speed of light in the universe's periphery . This gave Geryl a lot of publicity , but was limited to Belgium and the Netherlands .

Patrick Geryl has written nine books in total which all have become top sellers .

Re: Huge asteroid will hit Antartic in 2012
If it was detected 4-5 years ago during the BLAST experiment then it can't be hanging around near the sun in the sky perpetually since then and still have an orbit that could ever intersect earth's.
 Quoting: Astronut

Astronut: I don't know where the timeframe of 4-5 years came from. From what I've been able to discern from the initial story (upon which this thread is based) it was published online on 9/7/2010. It references a story from the canadian press which I was able to dig up from the Toronto Star published 9/5/2010.

[link to www.thestar.com]

The report was published, according to the article, and then two days later it was pulled. Then, also according to the article, one week later, US and Canadian astronauts went on the record. That makes the discovery of the asteroid to be sometime within the week ending 9/4/2010 (allowing for unintentional discrepencies).

Now, let's say that it was actually discovered sometime near the turn of the year. If that were the case, and it is being followed by Mauna Kea, then we would have the time to figure out its trajectory, all known vectors, and determine (within a margin of error, of course) what the probability of its impact might be.

Thing is, we shouldn't have to dig all of this up. If the published article were accurate, it would have pertinent information which could be checked. I smell hoax, but I'm willing to withhold final judgement.

Re: Huge asteroid will hit Antartic in 2012
lol. Still bitter over SoHo thread eh ? a year later ??

TAZ is addressing an earlier poster who made a less than complementary reference to Astronut.

hehehe. Poor Astro, youll never hear the end of that.

Here TAZ is attempting to commiserate with Astronut's having "fans."

Two smart people. The problem is there is no "Emotion" button on the forum. I can bold text, but my English can easily be misunderstood if I am not careful with my context. Even then....

You and Taz are both interesting folks who happen to communicate with different styles. Both fairly smart, just differing opinions on some things. If you were in the same town I could easily seeing you guys hanging together.

I thank you both for putting your monikers on your posts and not being boring!

# City Buster: 15-m diam meteoroid ===> 106 tons TNT = 1 Megaton (MT). Serious local consequences, though atmosphere provides partial shield. Hydrogen-bomb scale, but without the radioactivity.

# People Buster: 1-km diam asteroid ===> 250,000 MT. No atmospheric shield. Hemispheric-scale effects. At threshold for global effects. Significant fraction of all humans killed.

# Planet Buster: 10-km diam asteroid ===> 250 million MT. global effects. Ejected, vaporized rock and water fill atmosphere ===> global winter ===> major extinction of lifeforms, including virtually all humans.

Huge asteroid will hit Antartic in 2012

......The article hypothesized a 94% probability that the asteroid would impact on the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf and cause 2/3 of ice on Antarctica to crumble into sea!!.

 Quoting: chopel

They (the publicity department for the movie 2012)started with an advertising campaign where they set out to terrify kids and the gullible with their Institute for Human Continuity website.
A very slick and plausible looking site with statements such as "The I.H.C.'s comprehensive research has confirmed with 94% certainty that in the year 2012 cataclysmic forces will decimate our planet and much of its inhabitants."
So we go back to the site and what do we find? The words "Part of the 2012 Movie Experience" plastered across the middle of the home page and '"Sony Pictures" cropping up everywhere. The "94% certainty" claim has mysteriously vanished.
So the website has done its job in publicising the movie.

maybe this thread is 94% B.S.

Re: Huge asteroid will hit Antartic in 2012
there is this thing called web archive, you know?

it keeps track of EVERYTHING posted online.

IF this was REALLY online, you should be able to track it down.

now, go get it.

:)

I have been looking, nothing yet,If it was posted for only 2 days, it may not have gotten copied.

I do not think that there is a archive that keeps track of EVERYTHING posted online.

The article may of been a week ago but the last actual mission of the BLAST telescope was in 2006, beside that the telescope was studying deep space not looking for asteroids.

Well watch me blush and color me corrected. I should have checked the dates of the 3 blast flights. I can't account for the length of time between the flight and the paper. That's another strike against the story.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll be more thorough in the future.

Re: Huge asteroid will hit Antartic in 2012
www.space.com/spacewatch/asteroids-passing-near-earth-100907.html

In an unprecedented event for astronomers, two asteroids will swing past the Earth Wednesday at a distance closer than the moon.

The two asteroids, which will not be visible to the naked eye, were only recently discovered by astronomers with the Mount Lemmon Survey in Tucson, Ariz. They are in different orbits with close passes that will come nearly 11 hours apart. While scientists say neither threatens to strike the planet, the two space rocks do provide a challengingskywatching opportunity.

As the asteroid swings by our planet and gains speed, it should also brighten, but it will still be very hard to spot, astronomers have said. Its closest approach will be at 5:18 p.m. EDT (2118 GMT) on Wednesday.
