The Anunnaki who "remained behind" were never the Renegades. They were/are certain Elders who have Returned again and again in Various Aspects - to Teach and Guide their Creations. Their Aspects include many known and unknown Teachers/Masters throughout recorded "History" that the Masses have been given.
