Canada unveils new speed bump: optical illusion of a child *UPDATED*
What is the world coming to...I would probably not even see it...that's bad.

Officials in West Vancouver, Canada, apparently aren't satisfied with the driver-slowing properties of traditional speed bumps. On Tuesday, the town unveiled a new way to persuade motorists to ease off the gas pedal in the vicinity of the École Pauline Johnson Elementary School: a 2-D image of a child playing, creating the illusion that the approaching driver will soon blast into a child.

According to Discover magazine, the pavement painting appears to rise up as the driver gets closer to it, reaching full 3-D realism at around 100 feet: "Its designers created the image to give drivers who travel at the street's recommended 18 miles per hour (30 km per hour) enough time to stop before hitting Pavement Patty -- acknowledging the spectacle before they continue to safely roll over her."

I applaud their efforts. Sensory adaptation will soon take over and people will become adjusted to this too. It's inevitable. I still, though, appreciate the innovative way our minds play tricks with what our eyes see.

Wow!!! That was a mouth full. Better I drink coffee.

What happens when people become desensitized to this then start to roll through knowing it is optical illusion. Then a real child gets trucked. Fail

Good point.

You can hear the defense in court:

The defendant has been conditioned to think that all small children playing in the road are fake and unreal.

Good concept, bad implementation. They should change it just be dollar signs $$ popping up. I bet you that people would remember real quick they are in a school zone.
As his vision slowly cleared, the traveler came to the startling realization that he had been sitting by the side of the road, repeatedly hitting himself in the head with his walking staff. He had in fact been doing this for a quarter of a century.

Shaking his head at his own folly, he dusted himself off, set his gaze upon the road up the mountain and once more set off upon his journey.

Worse yet, folks who generally drive that road will play games to see if they can speed to crush the 3d drawing. Problem is one day it isn't the 3d drawing but a flesh and blood kid.

Dumb expenditure in trying to condition folks who just won't get it in any event irrespective of what trickery you try and implement to change their behaviour.

Most drivers here don't seem to care if you are real.

I can't tell you how many times I have had to bang on the hood of a car to prevent it from running me over at an intersection "walk" sign.

They are too busy on their phones, or eating lunch etc. to pay attention to pedestrians.

How completely retarded can you get?!!!

1. A driver slams on their brakes thinking they are about to plow into a real child; thus causing a crash as cars behind plough into them.

2. As above but a driver swerves to avoid the 'child' and misses the illusion but hits a real one on the sidewalk.

3. People start confusing real kids and imaginary kids.

4. Its a bit sick and could actually traumatise some people (especially children who are riding as passengers).

5. Idiots will inevitabely invent some kind of sick game where they 'edit' the images in sick ways.

One word for the designer of this; 'twat'.

They'd be better off just painting the ball on the road. This would at least cause an instantaneous scan by the brain and an immediate slowing, or braking, without the potential swerve. You don't know where the child is coming from so you hold steady in the middle of the road.
