if God were to step in and say "no no no" every day that lawmakers (admittedly the ones we've elected) make laws that allow women and doctors to commit murder....if he stopped people from being able to make there own choices, if God ruled the country with an iron fist, then he would just be replacing the kings and queens our forefathers fought against. The Gospel of John, 1 Jn, 2 Jn, and 3 Jn all explain to us the difference between light and dark. You choose whichever you will, it doesnt change the fact that they both still exist.
And you are right, the God of the Jews probably would have ruled us with an iron fist. But Jesus came as the God of both Jew and Gentile. God gave us a cleansing "flood" without the ark, without personally destroying nearly all of mankind.
