At the current distance of Betelgeuse from the Earth, such a supernova explosion would be the brightest recorded; outshining the Moon in the night sky and becoming easily visible in broad daylight.

The supernova would brighten to an apparent magnitude of −12 over a two-week period, then remain at that intensity for two or three months before rapidly dimming.

I doubt anything will happen,... It will be another 400 years or more before anyone will see it if it were to supernova today!

It may have gone supernova 600 years ago... we are about to see it within a year I believe. Astronomers are watching and collecting data.

It went super nova some time ago. At least some of the increased UFO activity has to do with those escaping affected planetary systems.

Really Betelgeuse? I thought it was Sirius A was the real danger because it is about 8.6 light years away and is a blue super giant. Betelgeuse is over 400 light years distant.

There is more danger from Sirius A than Betelgeuse.

beatlegeuse is 20 solar masses and 1000 times the size of sun where as sirius is only 2 solar masses.

Somebody would tell us "IT'S JUST VENUS, YOU TARDS!!!" and we would ignore it and have to watch it on lousy video.

It would be really cool...assuming it doesn't kill us all or something.

As good as it would be to see, to see it directly with the naked eye would render one completely blinded for life.

It's the same as staring at the Sunthrough a Telescope, only the magnitude of light would be hundreds of times greater from a singular pin-point of light in the sky, burning out your retina completely if directly viewing it.

Not even using the best Solar Filters on the Market would be useful to the amateur observer.

If we actually SEE the nova it means it happened 400 years ago and we are okay (cuz if we can see it in the sky we are still alive). If the gamma rays kill us all we won't see shit, so we'll never know, cuz we'll be dead.

you are a bigger wank. Betelgeuse is a STAR that means regardless of how big it explodes, it will still be the same size AS a star in the sky to the observer here on Earth.
It would be the equivalent of looking at a lazer bean (except obviously this "beam" is also expelling light due to its nature.)
If Betelgeuse was the same size as the Moon in sky, I would be really worried. And for a fact Moon observers DO use filters because the Moons magnitude is bright enough to warrant retinal damage.
