if IT JUST HIT THE FAN - would you bug out? leave work? finish out your day?

I used to live in the DC area. I was on my way to work when 9/11 happened. I turned around and went home. I considered going to WV to stay with relatives, but decided against it. I watched from my apartment as all **** broke loose. People running, yelling, traffic jams, nobody obeying traffic signals. Crazy. Under the circumstances, my boss understood. You just have to make the best decision you can at the time.

I would get my ass to the ones I love and want to protect first and formost.
Figure out a plan from there, if I don't already have one.

Essential staff in hospital environments are required to finish their shifts aren't they?

Same goes with any law or emergency response professionals.

But during Katrina it was chaos and old people living in nursing homes were left alone to die.

I go home for much less. Keeping with the intent of your original post... I would leave. Why not?

I would do the same as I did on 9/11.... when I learned mid walk to my 2 class of the day, I said "fuck this" rerouted back to my apartment.

Be gone in a heart beat. Have a Go bag under my desk with protein bars, water, first aid kit, sneakers, change of clothes, kinfe and a M15 gas mask. I live in NYC so after 9/11 I don't take anymore chances.

I would definitley leave work and if they didn't understand oh well...my first priority is my family.

I'm a 100% company. I'd stick it out...of course i work in Porn though.

There would be no reason for me NOT to go home and be with my family. I have plenty of vacation, personal leave, etc.

I'd just go, man. Plus, I'm a commuter. I wouldn't want to get caught/separated...I'd be headed home.

Yep! There is a large array of charges you can face for that. Those completely helpless people are one thing to consider before you decide to abandon post....

Bug out? I like HAUL ASS, not as wimpy sounding.

I would leave 100% for sure if a nuke went off in a city within the main 48 states. No thought at all, because I commute 30 miles to work, and I don't want to be walking due to stopped traffic

Yes they are. However, at what point do you pack your bags and get out of work? My question was directly aimed at this type of situation - when would you justify it to yourself that its okay to bug out even though it might cost you your job, but might enable to save your children. Its a tough call - do you put priority on family, or your duty to the job?

I'm already there.

Number one, first thing, period...get my son, whatever it takes. Even if I had to walk the 5 miles to his school and break him out... After that, assess the situation and proceed as needed.

My brother left work after the first tower was hit on 9/11.....he said the building security guards was telling people everything is OK and to return to their desks....some of his co workers stayed behind....

if my building is ever hit by a plane, im bugging out. you couldnt convince me to stick around.

All family members have PRINTOUTS primary and secondary routes home from work for both walking shortest and to avoid the most populated centers in their glove boxes.

Orders are to get home ASAP and dog zebra the house down.

Walking routes because if its nuke, everything electronic is toasted, even your watch and phone. No car electronics means no car.

I don't really understand your post.

Calare and I have evacuation plans ready at all times. Sometimes we see the possibility of something happening, and pack the car just in case.

She gets our son to a safe location. I continue working through it, and we assess the situation once there is valid information upon which to work.

I don't know if I would have left or not then. But now I would not think twice about following what my gut told me to do.

Good question. Ultimately people will take care of their loved ones so it would depend on the level of doom and where it was located.

Total devastation over a large area like Katrina and you get people abandoning jobs etc.

Total devastation over a localized place like the 9/11 events and people generally carry on.

tshtf will involve giant tsunamis

on the flipside - if something like this happened, would anyone fortify and take up arms against looters and whatnot?
