BRIEF AND TO THE POINT User ID: 381742 United States 09/14/2010 09:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've already backed up the internet on to floppy discs... Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it! when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support! :Brieffromnativea: |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1098325You know, like books. how big is your personal library.... unfortunately i dont have nearly enough space to store my 35,000 books in hard copy. Don't forget to backup! CD's/DVD's are more reliable the hard-drives in the long run. In the longer run, harder copies are essential! Imagine if the media of choice 2000 years ago was 'digital' rather than 'analogue' - no records would have survived! Space v.s. time biased modes of communication. One reaches everywhere almost instantly but vanishes almost as instantly. The other doesn't travel far but lasts for eons. |

Kashodi User ID: 1098347 Canada 09/14/2010 09:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I find if it is absolutely valuable information, the smartest thing you can do is buy a hard copy. If the internet goes down or gets censored (it already is) digital back ups are a good idea. But if TSHTF i'm pretty sure you won't be running around with your computer looking for an outlet and power. I know books are heavy, but knowledge is power. Just my 2cents. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1098436 Austria 09/14/2010 10:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We are going to be the time period with the least information or wisdom to be found by the archeologues of the futures centuries. Even if they found a CD they won't find a reader and even if it did it will either not work or demand some understanding than people of that time won't have. Keep it simple, leave fun for the next generations after TSHTF, write it on clay tablets. |

Just my 2cents. a wacky but probably a technology already invented and used by the military and eilites, logically you would design a printer similar to those that etch cucuits into silicon at super small scales to print books onto a slab of Grantite, Diorite or maybe titanium or the new liquid metal material thats actually harder than titanium. The printer would use diamond etching heads, and the finished product would be readble using a simple optical microscope on a grid system, solar powerd and motorized by micro motors that can take you to any book position on the entire slab or remember bookmarks etc, all done by simple very low power solar powerd microchips. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1098325You know, like books. how big is your personal library.... unfortunately i dont have nearly enough space to store my 35,000 books in hard copy. Well, since you asked. I have five, six foot tall bookcases stuffed with books. Two five foot wide by four feet tall bookcases stuffed with books. Two closet shelves eight feet wide lined with paperbacks, three rows each. About ten boxes, at least, of books in a storage closet. Topics include: travel, reference, survival, cooking, poetry, literature, science fiction, business, computer tech, design, art, spirituality, astrology, religion, and some that are out-of-print and/or hard to find. Included are the Harvard Classics, a set of encylopedias, several dictionaries, several Bibles, the Book of Morman, a set that includes the sacred text of every major religion ... and every single issue of "Mother Earth" since 1970. Oh and ... some comic books dating back to the 1950s. But I admit that that's unusual. In the past, I have chosen to buy books, rather than food. And each time I've moved, I've "paid" dearly for our family obsession. That said, it would be wise to back up some books off the net ... which we've done in addition to all the books we already have. |

I think building a digital libary would suit you as a new hobby, and you could add to the collection you already have. |

Its not hard at all to backup 115 GB. Get a Solid State hardrive. They don't have moving parts like a normal hardrive... hence more reliable than CD/DVD and regular "needle spinning" hardrives. |

My collection has become burdensome, but still I add - classics, reference, textbooks, fringe, theology, etc. You know, one of the most viable threats to civilzation, at this moment in time is a natural or manmade EMP disaster. If that happens, won't you wish you had the real thing? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1099315 United Kingdom 09/15/2010 01:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | net neutrality and censorship Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1099617net neutrality and censorship are the exact opposite. net neutrality is a good thing. Net neutrality will in effect lead to censorship, since the big owners will be able to decide what can host on their sub domains. From what i heard net neutrality will lead to internet resembling cable tv service, with the user paying extra for forums and anything out of the mainstream big boys. so no its not a good thing at all.. everybody get backign up now. |
