I'm staying with a family there soon and I don't want to make them uncomfortable. So any knowledge would be appreciated, thanks.

I've heard there's a lot of cool people there, you'd probably fit right in. I've thought of going there myself.

They will worship you like a God. They are a simple folk with strange beliefs. As a great white God, you will have all the mangoes and virgins you can eat.

I suppose it depends on what type of look you have. There is more than one big beard and long hair look. You could have anything from the Hell's Angel look to the Santa Claus look with long hair and a beard.

I personally know a gringo with a Santa Claus look who can't go anywhere without kids staring at him in amazement and shouting "Papa Noel!"

Either way, long hair and a big beard will make you stand out as a person with a look not usually seen, and hence make you a novelty.

If you are gringo, you don't have to worry about making anyone uncomfortable. As a rich foreigner, you are allowed to be different, and you will be cut much more slack in Costa Rica than you would be in the USA. The red carpet will be rolled out for you everywhere you go, because if you are an American, you are thought to be wealthy.

I have seen Americans dressed as bag ladies instantly buzzed into ritzy jewelry stores where local women dressed as Lady Di must provide proof that they have enough income to shop there.
