ubuntu linux
Check it out, boys and girls. Only been using it for about 1/2 hour; but it is completely awesome. A 10 out of 10 in my humble opinion.

Re: ubuntu linux
Yes very nice stuff indeed. Just grabbed a copy of Ubuntu 6.10 Live CD and tried it out. So nice this is. So I liked it so much went out and bought another hardrive to dual boot XP and Ubuntu. Had a problem with my XP install as I used the whole drive as a primary partion and wanted to resize it and make another primary partion for a future triple boot possibility with Vista. Left the other hard drive fror Linux. So I needed to resize this partion. XP could not do the job. Googled it and came up with Partion Magic and a few other software tools. All costing a hundred dollars or so each. Decided to pop in the Live Ubuntu CD again and use GPART worked like a dream and it was free. I was so damn happy because I didn't want to download a cracked copy of Partion Magic or something like that. If anything just some of the tools for Linux are worth having. Ubuntu Rocks. I was really surprised the first time I booted from the Live Cd with it. Everything was working all my hardware, the internet everything. Didn't have to do shit. Beautiful that is. It takes at least two fucking days to load up my XP system with all the windows updates and hardware CD and configurations. Ubuntu does it all for you the minute it's installed. So sweet. My computer is a home build so it's not like putting in a Emachine CD and loading it up. Going to wait till April 19th for Ubuntu 7 then install it on my slave hardrive. People should really check this stuff out. It's more then worth it. Just clearing up my desk now to use dual Lcd mointors plus a 14" LCD Panisonic TV.

Re: ubuntu linux
The guy that wrote this had some problems, but I have had none...

Can you connect to the MSN Messenger network using Free Linux operating systems? Sure you can. There is Gaim, there is Kopete. Are they attractive? No, they aren't. Their interfaces are terrible. Moreover, all you can do with them is write basic IMs. Bye bye overbloated and stupid nudge and Flash sequences. Just the text ma'am. Display picture? Well, it sort of works, but that's all. File transfers? I can swear that you're a lucky guy (girl) when it works. Usually it doesn't, resulting in embarrassing 'Sorry mate, I'm using Linux, you know and, well, could you mail me this picture instead?'.

And boy are they ugly. Compare a MSN Messenger 7 chat window and a Gaim window. Gaim (or Kopete for that matter) is so austere that the comparison looks unfair even to people who, like me, usually hate themed windows and flashy-for-the- sake-of-being-flashy interfaces.

Will it keep me from using other OSes than Windows? Certainly not. Will it keep young people from using them? You bet. And that's the point of this long rant. Office and creative applications, are undoubtely important tools for keeping Windows' (and to a lesser extent, Mac OS X's) lock-in on the Desktop. But I can't understand why every Free and Open Source advocate basically snobs IM's. Gaim and Kopete are just not good enough. I mean that their target public (i.e. young people) just won't care to use it (I understand that some people, me included, can live with them. We just aren't the target public).

We have OpenOffice.org, we have FireFox. Both are doing well in their respective domains. Why do we keep thinking that Gaim's so '1999-2000' tools are good enough? They aren't and it's my opinion -- and I'd really like it to be false -- that it's a major problem to address in the next few months in order to increase the admission of Free and Open Source software on the desktop. A problem that has to be addressed very, very quickly, before it becomes even worse.

The guy who wrote that seems to have issues that I haven't seen.

I don't use MSN though, Skype is the best tool for getting hold of people.

Ubuntu linux is quite good, especially the new "Feisty Fawn" release, but it's not the second coming of Christ... it still has some issues, and I would not recommend it to Linux newbies who are coming from the Windows universe.

PCLinuxOS is the best thing there is right now, I guess.

Re: ubuntu linux
I've installed it as a Dual boot, just the other day. ( I want to set it up as a PXE Server so I can install it on my laptop that does not have a CD ROM drive).

I am currently having problems with debconf /var/lib/dpkg/info saying that it is missing the final newline in the files list file.

Am waiting on a CD from Ebay. I think this may solve the problem as the other cd I installed off may be corrupt.

Re: ubuntu linux
The latest release of Ubuntu is v 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).

Ubuntu blows Windows XP and Vista out of the water, especially in the areas of security, performance and ease of use. The default Gnome desktop manager is clean and uncluttered. The OS is regularly updated and has a huge base of GNU/Linux software to choose from. Performance is outstanding even on systems that are a few years old and have 512MB of RAM or less. Best of all, it costs $0!!

Fuck Microsoft and their proprietary shitware. Their operating systems are bloated, resource-hogging and vulnerable to numerous kittens attacks. Ubuntu is pretty much virus and kittens resistant and even features a complete office package called Openoffice.

If you value the privacy and security of your data then stay away from Microsoft operating systems. They are massive trojans which routinely monitor user activity and work AGAINST the user.

Then you haven't spent much time in the Linux world...

While Ubuntu is customizable and heavy on included lib repositories, it is ugly, boring and has very few included apps...

Better for a n006 would be Simply MEPIS with the Ubuntu compiled kernel and KDE desktop...PCLOS is also a better choice...

I prefer lean and mean on old 'disposable' legacy hardware...

Damn Small Linux and Puppy v.2.15 CE...

Re: ubuntu linux
For the person having the modem trouble, if you are using wireless internet it may be your wireless card. I had a similar problem. Had to buy a Netgear 1 card. The others on the market would not support Linux. I love Ubuntu and would not go back to windows for anything. My mom called asking me to wipe her Windows XP computer due to all the viruses and flowers and strange processes running that are slowing her computer down. I sure don't miss that crap.

Serious Question

Can Ubuntu, or any Linux for that matter, run Webkinz?
I'm dead serious about this. I have a 10 year old gateway I let my kids use, and they love Webkinz. But, the webkinz site is heavy on Flash or something like that. We already use Firefox, and I know there is a FF version for Linux, so naturally, one would expect this to work.

Could anyone here currently using Ubuntu, or any Linux distro, please go to webkinz and see if it works?

Many thanks my conspiracy peops.
